This is Your Brain on iPhone

Apple just launched the App Store for iPhone and it’s got a shiny new Evernote! Our iPhone app is the best Evernote experience on a mobile phone yet; it’ll let you capture image, voice and text notes and automagically zap them to your Evernote account. You can also find, browse and search your notes with full tag, attribute and keyword support. All this without having to futz around with email or the web browser.

Oh, and since your iPhone knows where you are, it’ll geo-tag anything you capture! Having location information in your notes is going to open up lots of new possibilities and future enhancements.

Of course, any self-respecting external brain is the same no matter what device you use to get at it, so the new iPhone version of Evernote automatically synchronizes with all of our other PC, Mac, Web and mobile versions.

Evernote for iPhone works on first generation iPhones (just download the iTunes 7.7 which came out today and upgrade to the 2.0 firmware), as well as the iPhone 3G that comes out tomorrow. To get it, go to the new Apple App Store, or visit our new iPhone download page. Like all of our clients, the new iPhone version is free to download and works with both free and premium Evernote accounts..

We’re really psyched about this new platform for Evernote and are already planning lots of additions and enhancements. Evernote for iPhone is just scratching the surface compared to what’s coming, but it’s a pretty nifty scratch. Check it out and let us know what you think!

[Update: Some people in the comments are reporting problems with notes lingering in the 'Pending' section of the app. This is partially caused by the slowness of the iPhone's EDGE network which has been hit particularly hard in these past few days. The phone will sometimes go to sleep while sending a note and it doesn't always wake up smoothly. Syncing works better over WiFi and 3G. We've also submitted a new version of the Evernote client to Apple that improves syncing performance across all networks and has a few feature enhancements. You'll be able to auto-update as soon as Apple starts pushing out application changes to the App Store. We expect this to happen soon, but - since Apple has a lot on their hands today - we're not sure when.

Downloaded it, using it already and it’s working like a champ. My only suggestion…let me edit the existing notes that I have already created. I don’t want to have to create a new note everytime.

Looks great (and the desktop client is incredible)!

Having a little trouble getting it to sync, but I’m not terribly worried at this early point!

Well this is great, but I do not think much of iPhone.

How about online poll for features, new platforms, etc. This would be a really good way to connect with the customers. You can also assign more weight to premium customers votes.

Here is my list, if you care:

* HTTP proxy for the windows client
* Blackberry – simple interface, no images, no videos, no hand writing recognition etc.
* The same in Java for every other phone.

When the iPhone development kit was announced, I was quite excited. Finally! I thought. I’ll be able to develop the app I’ve always wanted – something to organize the photographs I take to remind myself of things (books, bottles of wine, etc), add metadata and keep it all in sync with my desktop and a server somewhere.

Being a user experience designer, I immediately went about sketching up ideas and crafted a few polished wireframes to share with my developer friends.

One of those developers asked me: Have you tried Evernote?

My heart sank. Not only have you realized my rough idea, you’ve gone above and beyond in countless ways! Fortunately, I’m far more impressed than disappointed. I’ve downloaded the iPhone app and have signed up as a premium member. Keep up the good work!

Does it work with the iPod Touch? This post only mentions iPhones. Of course the Touch wouldn’t have location info (except what it could get from Wifi triangulation). Still, it would be great to have on the Touch – hope that’s the case.

How did you get your notes to upload? I’ve had 4 notes sitting in pending for a while now and all I can apparently do with them is delete them.

IT, no offense, but only people who haven’t used an iPhone think it can’t keep up. I can type as fast or faster on the iPhone as on a Blackberry. It took a week or so to get up to speed, but I’ll never go back to a physical keyboard on a mobile device.

Isn’t there any way to sync notes to the iPhone so that they are available when offline? I’m on holiday soon and I want access to my notes but don’t want to incur roaming data charges.

I’ve got the same problem as Ted. Download of notes from other sources are working, so I know it is connecting to Evernote, but I’ve had 3 notes pending for about 3 hours.

I would also like to be able to edit old notes.

Anyways, asking my question, does it store the data on a phone? or must it be “online” to use it?

If i synced at home, and went out, be great to use it without worry of having internet (offline essentially)

(potential iPod touch buyer…)

First off I would like to say how great your applications and services are – you’ve made my life much easier.

Hopefully you are planning to introduce editing of existing notes into the iPhone app, as that would make it one of *the* killer apps on the device.

Nice app and great idea. Too slow at the moment even on wi-fi for sharing photo ideas to the ipod but sure the speed will improve.

Sounds ideal though for general idea gathering and will be a premium member when it speeds up!

From my initial exploration of Evernote on my iPod Touch newly updated with the 2.0 software, I found that it synchronizes my notes from Windows and Mac just fine.

Some thoughts:

1. I’d like for it to sync only certain notes (say, one from my general notebook and one from my mobile notebook).

2. I’d like for it to work OFFLINE. I have a Touch, and WiFi is not yet ubiquitous in the USA. I was more than a little disappointed when I tried to run the program offline and all my notes were missing (they were there earlier when I was online).

Good start, though. I love having a platform-agnostic note-taking/storing application.

Very excited about this app… downloaded to iPhone (not new G2). All notes created on iPhone are in PENDING file and have been for 18 hours. I’m on a high-bandwidth wi-fi network too.

How about a status monitor for each pending item — x% uploaded, or even just an animated icon to indicate that in process? As an uninitiated user, I thought that PENDING meant I’m supposed to do something more with each item.

Discovered Evernote as I was browsing the App Store yesterday, and I have to say that, as a whole, Evernote is one of the best products to be coupled with the new iPhone software. Also extremely pleased to see that you’ve not only become aware of some of the (extremely minor) problems with the App, but that you’ve submitted a new build to Apple. Consider me sold (I have my eye on one of those t-shirts…), and keep up the awesome work!

Evernote is unable to save notes during a call. I was noting down a number when a call was active (No Wi-fi. Was using edge), and when I tried to save, it gave me a nasty SQL error. I tried it a couple of times but the same thing. It could not save the note when a call was active. I understand that it cannot use Edge network when a call is active, but it would be nice if EverNote could at least put the note in the pending list. Then upload it to the server when the call is ended and Edge network becomes available.

I’m surprised no one has pointed out how unfavourably the new app compares to the mobile safari client: no action menu (view on map, email), strips out newlines on entry and displays notes unreadably small.

And still no editing or offline access.

I love having evernote on the iPhone, although so far I prefer viewing the notes using the safari web browser. When I view the notes using the app, the text is way too small, so I have to zoom in and then I have to pan around a lot in order to read, whereas using safari, the text is nice and easy to read and wraps well.

Am I missing a setting somewhere?

As for having notes locally on the iPhone and being able to edit notes on the iPhone, please consider this a strong plea to speed up development of this feature.

OK, Evernote was the first one out of the gate with an iPhone app update, and I’m happy to say, corrected the problem of things sticking in “Pending” on the iPhone!! Just go to “App Store” and “updates” and there should be one available if you downloaded before today. Thanks for fixing this so quickly guys…this is such an awesome app!! Now, pleeeease…if you can just add: 1. existing note editing on iPhone and 2. the ability to email a note from the device, I’m golden!

The first version never synced for me at all – Edge or WiFi. I’ve updated to the new version released today. It’s been 10 minutes on Pending and still no sync for a simple 2 word text note. I’m afraid this is a deal-breaker for me…

I would at least like the ability to flag specific notes to be cached for offline viewing. For example, certain reference information, a “todo” note, etc.

Genius! Thank you thank you! This makes Evernote a killer app for me and my business… the only thing that I want right now that I don’t want to wait for is iPhone editing of old notes. It seriously limits my ability to use it if I can only read. reading is nice, but writing is better
