Evernote for Windows: PDF Indexing, Improved Stability

Last week, we released the latest version of Evernote for Windows. This release includes some new features and a slew of stability improvements.

Stability

The latest build dramatically improves the stability of the Windows client –fewer bugs, fewer crashes, more goodness. It’s not perfect, but it’s a whole lot better.

Databases are local

We learned that in some cases, users in corporate environments might inadvertently have their Evernote databases stored on the network. With the latest release, databases are, by default, stored on the local machine, improving speed and reliability.

PDF indexing

Evernote for Windows now indexes PDFs. This means that when you perform a search, Evernote will also look within PDFs, and return them in your results.

What’s next: We’re beginning work on PDF previews in Windows. Look for that in the not-too-distant future.

Evernote Web adds attachments and easier tagging

We just added two great features to Evernote Web:

Adding attachments

webattach

Evernote Web now allows you to attach up to 10 images, audio files, and PDFs to a single note. To attach a file:

  1. Edit or create a note
  2. Click the new “Attach file” link
  3. Locate and attach file(s) from your machine
  4. Click Done

Finally, once you have finished making changes to the note, click “Save Changes” in the main edit screen. Keep in mind, you must click “Save Changes” in order for the files to appear. And, until you do so, your monthly upload allowance will not be affected –good in case you accidentally attach the wrong file.

Easier tagging

Tagging just got a whole lot easier. When creating or editing a note, you can now type your tags into the new tag field. If the tag already exists, then Evernote will auto-complete it. To add multiple tags at once, separate each with a comma. As always, you can drag-n-drop tags onto your notes.

Evernote for iPhone 1.2 Gets Note Editing and More…

Let’s just cut to the chase. You asked, and we made it happen:

  • I want to edit notes right on the iPhone: DONE
  • Give me more audio recording time: YOU GOT IT
  • Make image and audio uploads faster: IT’S 4X FASTER NOW
  • Let me choose to have notes sync only over WiFi: OKIE DOKIE
  • Ugh, the first line of my text notes gets cut off: FIXED
  • Integrate a flashlight application: UM, NO

Editing existing notes

With the latest Evernote for iPhone release, you can edit existing plain text notes; append text to notes that contain images, audio, or other rich content; and change tags or notebooks for existing notes –all directly on the iPhone.

To edit a note, open it and click on the new Edit Note icon in the lower right corner.

Shiny new audio recorder

The audio recorder is completely redesigned, making it significantly more user friendly and intuitive. We increased the maximum recording time to 5 minutes, added a level meter, gave it some nice thumb-friendly buttons, and made the whole thing a lot easier to use.

Note upload options

We learned that some of our users pay a hefty price for cellular data transfers. Since we’re in the business of improving your memory, not emptying your wallet, we’ve added the option to choose whether notes are sync’d over cellular networks or only when connected to WiFi. This setting is located in the Account screen.

Faster uploads

We’ve significantly improved our image and audio compression, which translates into uploads that are nearly 4X faster than in previous versions.

Other improvements and fixes

  • Take a call or quit the application without losing your work
  • Note list automatically displays any newly created notes
  • Fixed a bunch of “Pending note” issues

Thanks everyone for the great feedback. Please keep the ideas and suggestions coming. Now that we’ve got the 1.2 release out, we’re rolling up our sleeves and getting started on the biggest task: letting you have local storage of notes right on your iPhone. Stay tuned.

New Version of Evernote for the Mac

We’ve just released version 1.1.4 of Evernote for the Mac.  This version makes several improvements to editing, clipping and dragging.  You can see the release notes and auto-upgrade your current Mac version by using the “Check for Updates” command from the “Evernote” menu.

You can also download a fresh copy of all our clients; Mac, Windows, iPhone, Windows Mobile, etc.; from the downloads page.

More updates for all the platforms are in the works…  We never rest.  Well, *I* rest, but not our developers.  Ok, sometimes they rest a little.  One at a time.
