The Amazing New and Improved Web Clipper

February 26, 2009 | Posted by Andrew Sinkov in Product updates

clipper

I love Evernote’s Web Clipper. There, I’ve said it. In fact, web clipping represents about 75% of my Evernote use. I clip articles, recipes, music reviews, stuff I want, places to eat, and gift ideas. In other words, tons and tons of clips. That’s why today’s announcement makes me a little giddy: the Web Clipper just got a jillion times better.

Besides looking snazzier, we’ve added a new feature called Quicknote, which lets you create a quick text note right from the browser without launching Evernote.

How the new clipper works

  • Clipping: Highlight a portion of the page, then click the Web Clipper. Evernote will clip any text, links, and image into your account complete with the source URL. If you want to clip the entire page, select all (CTRL+A, CMD+A) then click.
  • Quicknote: If you click WITHOUT selecting anything, the Quicknote appears, letting you to create a new text note right inside the Web Clipper popup. You can even grab the URL of the page you’re viewing for future reference.

Being able to clip what I need and create notes without switching to Evernote is a huge time saver, especially for those of us who spend a large portion of their day in the browser. Sweet!

Get it

The Web Clipper bookmarklet works in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. There is also a Firefox extension. Get the Web Clipper on the Evernote downloads page.

Please note: If you already have the FF extension installed, you will need to restart your browser to get the updated extension. Or, go to the Mozilla site to download the latest version.

Integration Spotlight: Shoeboxed

February 25, 2009 | Posted by Andrew Sinkov in Friends and Partners

shoeboxed

You see that pile of business cards in front of you (I know they’re there)? What about that wallet full of receipts weighing down your pocket? Imagine all of those pieces of paper digitized, searchable, and available in Evernote without you ever touching a scanner. Magic? Maybe a little.

Shoeboxed and Evernote

Shoeboxed is a service that will scan all your business cards and receipts. You just stuff all that paper into an envelope and mail it to Shoeboxed. Some accounts even get a special blue Shoeboxed envelope that come postage-paid and pre-addressed, to get rid of even that small burden. Think of it as Netflix for your papers.

Once Shoeboxed receives your stuff, they scan everything and make it available online. Now for the really cool part, you can send any of that content from Shoeboxed into Evernote, where those business cards, receipts, and any handwritten scribbles become searchable. All you need is your Evernote email address, which you can find in the settings page of you Evernote Web account.

Great together

There are tons of great ways to use the two services together. Here are a few ideas:

  • Dreading tax season? Use Shoeboxed to scan your receipts, then organize them in Evernote. If you’re an Evernote Premium user, you can even keep your tax software’s export files in Evernote, so that you can access them at any time.
  • Just got back from a long business trip? Instead of having your business cards in one place, receipts in another, and meeting notes somewhere else, now everything can be saved and organized in Evernote. All searchable and available whenever you need.
  • Taking a home inventory? Send all your purchase receipts to Shoeboxed and import them into Evernote. Take snapshots of the things you own using your digital camera and add those to Evernote. Finally, take notes on the condition of your belongings directly in Evernote. Voila, a perfectly organized inventory for your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance

Happy Birthday To Us

cake
It’s the one year anniversary of our launch (actually, it was Saturday, but companies aren’t allowed to have birthdays on the weekend). We’ve had a pretty precocious first year: 770,000 users and 25 million notes! It took us over two months to reach our first million notes, and now we’re adding a million notes every week.

We’re particularly excited about our API partners. Since launching our API last October, over 230 third-party developers have signed up to create Evernote-enabled apps. We’ve already seen great results from Zengobi, Eye-Fi, Tarpipe and Pelotonics, and a lot more will be launching soon. (At least one will be launching very soon!)

We created Evernote to give everyone a second brain.  One year in, and so far so good.  Wait till you see what we’re up to by the time we’re two!

Cake time.

Try this: Want to see Evernote’s image recognition in action? Add the birthday cake image above to your account, sync, then search for the words written in frosting.

Integration Spotlight: Curio 5.4 by Zengobi

zengobi

We recently launched the Evernote API, which allows third party developers to integrate Evernote functionality into their applications and services. In this series, we will highlight some of the most exciting integrations.

Curio, in their own words

Curio is Zengobi’s award-winning note taking, mind mapping, brainstorming, and task management application for Mac OS X. Its innovative freeform interface promotes visual thinking, a more natural way to gather, associate, and recall ideas.

Curio + Evernote API

Curio 5.4 helps users organize their thoughts and ideas. Now, everyone from creative professionals to students can use any version of Evernote to capture their inspirations, and have that content automatically appear in Curio. UPDATE: For more information on the integration, read the Curio 5.4 release notes.

Why this is cool

Evernote is all about giving you the tools to capture your thoughts and experiences as they happen, which is why we’ve developed over 7 different versions for desktop, web, and mobile devices. So, no matter where you are, there’s always a version of Evernote within reach.

With this integration, you can easily take what you have been gathering in Evernote and automatically bring it into your Curio workflow. Take a note or photo using Evernote on your mobile device, and you will it have it waiting for you in Curio when you return to your desk. Once in Curio, those notes, snapshots, web clips, and research can all be used to help you brainstorm and, ultimately, complete your projects.
