Integration Spotlight: AP Mobile for iPhone

Talk about a perfect match…

The latest release of the very popular Associated Press application for iPhone lets you effortlessly clip AP articles into your Evernote account. Here’s the scenario: you’re browsing through the latest local, national, and international news on your iPhone when you stumble across a story about a man caught smuggling 91 lobsters in his jacket. You think to yourself, “I must get this into Evernote so that I’ll have it forever, but how?”

Why this is cool

The AP Mobile application allows you to access enormous amounts of news and information whenever you’re out and about. Thanks to the integration, you can now save any article and access it later from any version of Evernote that you use —mobile, desktop, or web. Also, all articles clipped from AP Mobile retain their source URL, so you can always go back to the original or easily share it with friends.

How it works

ap-screens

First, make sure that you have both the AP Mobile and Evernote applications installed on your iPhone. Next, follow these four simple steps:

  1. Launch the Associated Press app
  2. Choose on an article
  3. Tap on the “Forward” arrow
  4. Select Evernote

That’s it!

How they did it

The Associated Press used the Evernote API along with new functionality available in the iPhone 3.0 software that allows different applications to interact with one another right on the iPhone.

Unfortunately AP Mobile for the iPhone is very slow these days. First it loads… then it updates and if it gets that far with out crashing great but usually by that time I have to do some real work with the iPhone.

Nevertheless the concept is great. It would be great (if it hasn’t been done already) this could be added to an iPhone RSS reader that has a built in browser. An RSS reader on the Mac is the source of most my Evernote clips.

@Jyn: Our API is open, meaning anybody can potentially see how we do things and integrate Evernote with their own software.

My new iPhone seems to bog down really easily. Maybe they’ll come out with a patch soon to help that problem? Overall, I really love this app though!

Sadly, AP Mobile is not available in Canada. :-(

Can CP Mobile be hooked up with Evernote as well? I didn’t see any mention of Evernote on the app description.

This is a very attractive feature and, as mentioned before, it would be fantastic if the New York Times got wise and hooked up with you, too!

Too bad evernote seems to be moving away from the windows mobile community. I do not want to care to join the iphone craze but i can understand that’s where the dollars are. I’ll be abandoning evernote and continuing looking for a google notes replacement.

@Andy Um, iPhones work with Windows, if that’s your concern. There’s iTunes for Windows, too.
