How to Send Blog Posts from Google Reader to Evernote

August 14, 2009 | Posted by Andrew Sinkov in Product updates

Google Reader now lets you send blog posts directly into Evernote. When you send a post to Evernote, we go out to the source page and clip the whole thing –that way you get everything, not just the bit that you see in Reader.

Why I love this feature

A lot of my web life can be broadly classified as research: recipes, drool-worthy gadgets, lifehacking ideas, articles to read, etc. Much of that stuff enter my consciousness through Google Reader. The usual workflow is something like–see an interesting post, go to the blog, clip it into Evernote for later, return to Reader. Now, I can do everything without leaving Reader. Awesome.

Super simple setup

reader
Sign into Google Reader and click on the Settings link at the top of the page, then click on the “Send To” tab. Next, click “Create a Custom Link” and enter the following:

  • Name: Evernote
  • URL: http://s.evernote.com/grclip?url=${url}&title=${title}
  • Icon URL: http://www.evernote.com/favicon.ico

And you’re done!

What happens next

sendto-1
When you click your shiny new Send to Evernote button, a new tab will open asking you to sign into Evernote (if you haven’t done so recently), and to, optionally, select the destination notebook and add tags.

A little note

The results you will see are identical to clipping whole webpages using any of our web clippers, which means that you’ll get the content you want and some of the webpage element, too.

Nice one! However, for Dutch users (and maybe other languages).
First switch Google Reader language to English, then the Tab-menu appears in Google Reader and the Send to appears. Switching to Dutch theses settings will disappear.

before this new function in Google reader, I was sending the post by email to my evernote email adress.

And today I found a new tip in order to easily send email to my evernote as I didn’t manage to remenber the adress. Using gmail, I’m sending the note to login+evernote@gmail.com, and then use gmail filters to forward all emails to the correct evernote email adress.

    As easy as using evernote.

I think its funny that you have a delicious button since you seem to be doing everything to get to stop using it. Almost working…

    AWESOME!

Now, a question for a tweak.

Is there anything we can add to the URL that will direct the clip to go to a different default notebook?

For instance, if I have an Evernote notebook that is nothing but links, but is not my normal default notebook, is there some code we can tack on the end that will route the clip?

    Maybe something like “&notebook=Myclips”

Any chance you are working on something similar for netnewswire for the mac? I prefer it over google reader and would love this functionality…

While I appreciate the new possibility, I think I’ll keep sending it to my email instead of using this feature, for one simple reason: this clips the entire page, while sending to email with GReader sends only the content I’m interested.

If this feature was to send only the text and images from the feed instead of going to the original page, then it would work just perfect; I love the possibility to set Tags after clipping, that I don’t get with email.

@David: why don’t you just create a contact on GMail called “Send to Evernote” with the correct address? That way, if you just start typing on the address box you’ll get a suggestion for that contact (even if you just type “Evernote”). That’s what I do.

The method that David mentions is faster for collecting a bunch of things — the new sendto method makes you go through the page where you select a notebook and tag (which is nice if you want to do that), whereas the username+evernote@gmail.com method just sends it off. (If you name that address in you address book an infrequently used letter, like X, then you can pull up the name quickly too.) Also, the gmail method better preserves formatting.

This is great. Especially since NetNewsWire recently went all Google Reader exclusive. They only sync with that now. But they left out support for syncing News Clips. They have a new built in feature to send the clipping to instapaper. But I would much rather have it sync with Evernote, this is far better idea. Awesome!

I think I need a lesson on Evernote for Dummies. I have tried several times to set up for Google Reader. I follow the directions exactly by pasting in the URLs and saving. Then nothing

“When you click your shiny new Send to Evernote button, a new tab will open asking you to sign into Evernote (if you haven’t done so recently), and to, optionally, select the destination notebook and add tags.”

There is no Send to Evernote button. I go back to Google reader. Nada! I have tried this several times

Help! What am I doing wrong???

Good addition, but one request. Could you add a button on the Evernote page it takes you to “Save and Close Window”.

Most of the time, I’m saving for later not to view it then (and I always have Evernote open).

Awesome! In the past days, I save my evernote import-email address in the contact book of gmail. And when I see a good post in reader, just press e to send an email and input “eve” in receiver address(will get a advice), and finally click s to send~

Any chance you could support the ${source} tag to clip just the rss item instead of the linked page.

It would be usefull to be able to set up both types of clipping depending wether the content is in the item or linked.

    Cheers

More ore less useless feature if you are using the evernote web clipper since sending redirect to evernote web page. It should just send it and add it to your default notebook without directing asking for password etc.

    Hey Patricia A,
which language do you use Google Reader in?
I found that eg the German Google Reader doesn’t show the “Send To”-Tab.
If you use another language than English, switch your Reader to English, then the Tab will appear.

This is utterly retarded. Why would I want to clip a page that I haven’t even actually seen with all of it’s clutter i.e.. hundreds of comments? Good feeds contain all the essential content within the post. At least make it optional to clip only what can be seen in Google Reader.

I’m not sure what’s wrong. I’ve gone through the steps, copy and pasted the urls and nothing happens. I have the option in GR to Sent to Evernote but when I click on it a new blank page opens and that’s it. No login, no list of notebooks, nothing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Well, if it’s retarded, feel free not to use it.

And if you want to clip what you see, why not use the email to Evernote function?

    Sheesh.

I’m having issues where the page I get popped up is blank – I can’t figure out if it’s the work net nanny stopping me, but I CAN get to the main Evernote page. Oh well.

Every item in Google Reader I’ve tried so far gives me the same failure message:

    Clipping error

Sorry, we were unable to capture [site title and URL]. Some web sites are constructed in a way that prevents us from clipping their content.

Is there a way to sent to evernote without the evernote page coming up? This isn’t really helpful to me if I am redirected to evernote everytime I clip something – this requires the same effort as going to the link page and clipping to evernote.

Sorry if this is answered above somewhere.

Isn’t there a way to get this functionality from Delicious and Emails?

If i email a link to diigo i usually want to save the PAGE, not just the link. Yet i just get an empty note with a link.
Also if i bookmark something in delicious it’d be nice to get it saved in evernote.

Anyone using English and not seeing the Evernote button, I thought the same thing but what you see at the bottom of the article at first is just Send To, once you click on that it opens to show Evernote.

This is the power of Evernote – To use it the way you want to. Clip, email, send-to. Very nice guys!

that is quite a godsend! thank you very much! now if you could figure out for me how to set up a default notebook (for instance i might want to do a quick send without opening up a new page on evernote) that would be great.
even more awesome if you can let me set up a list of notebooks to choose directly from gReader x=

wouldn’t it be easier if from either the evernote app or evernote login you could enter in the site for shared articles or starred articles? since this is open for other apps to use it seems like it could be an easy way to setup and would leave it open to other options as well. I have often thought about having some form of an RSS reader built into evernote for easily click and dragging into notebooks.

I agree that my perfect scenario would be for NetNewsWire to have this built in, instead of or along with Instapaper.

As it is, NNW has “Mail Link” built in, and if you have your Evernote email address in your mail client you can send stuff over. But, that’s 2 different apps, and I’m spoiled in this era of interconnected apps, and want it to be seamless. Waa.

Thanks Evernote – one more idea for streamlining my digital life.

It would be great if Reader displayed the “Send to” link in Safari on the iPhone, but it doesn’t. I don’t really see the point in using the “Send to” feature on my main computer because I could simply bookmark the URL, but on the iPhone it would be useful – too bad Reader doesn’t display it.

    Cool !

1- I’m user of Reader on laptop and Byline on iPhone.
Thus, it will be super to get that device on byline too !

2- As French user, please do note that I’ve had to switch to english language first to get the “Send” option as part of Google Reader functionalities.

That’s a nice EverNote implementation. What I’ve been doing with Google Reader is activating the “star” next to ones I’m interested in and reading them later on my phone or wherever, then un-”star”ing them when I was done (or keeping it like that forever).

Recently I like 2 new relatively new features (the “star” has been around since the beginning) — Sharing, and marking that you “like” a post. The sharing is not new but some newer implementation is. The “Like” feature is great but doesn’t let you mark something as liked on the iPhone.
