welcome2

This is a very exciting day here at Evernote. After months of work, and a ton of help from our amazing community of translators, we are happy to announce the availability of Evernote in French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

What’s available?

Every major version of Evernote is now available in these four languages. This includes Evernote for Windows (3.5 Beta only), Mac, Web, iPhone, BlackBerry, and others. In our desktop versions, the interface language will be based on your operating system’s language setting.

Image recognition in your language

A large part of this translation project has been focused on optimizing our image recognition technology to understand the nuances of all the different languages that we support (and will support). Since every language is different, we need you to tell us which language you want Evernote to look for in your notes.

language4

To do this:

  • Sign into your Evernote Web account
  • Click on the Setting link
  • Click on Personal Settings
  • Choose your preference from the Recognition language drop down menu

Much more to come

This is only the beginning. You can expect more languages to come online in the very near future. Stay tuned.

Great! So, when I have set the settings according to my native language. What do I have to do in order to re-index all my notes?

@Stephan We will be adding the re-indexing option shortly. Right now, all of you new notes will be indexed based on your preference.

I think it’s a PITA that we cannot manually set the language for the desktop versions of Evernote. It’s OK that you pick the OSs language for setting a default in Evernote, but you really should allow us to chage it.
If you want to reduce the number of settings to a minimum, at least a parameter like evernote.exe -en (to force English GUI) should exist.

I bought a laptop abroad and the OS is in a language I really have trouble understanding, plus I want my software to be in English… is it so hard to allow us that freedom???

@Pablo It seems like the easiest solution is to change your OS language settings, especially if it is already giving you grief.

I don’t understand the benefit of this option. Aren’t you recognizing text in notes regardless the language? And why should I limit to two languages only?

@Frank This particular feature relates to recognition of handwritten and printed text within images. Each language has different handwriting styles and over the past months we have been training our system to recognize the nuances of each. We also tie this information to dictionaries, in order to increase the accuracy of the results. By selecting a language you are improving the recognition results for that language. Selecting German does not mean that French results will disappear, it simply means that you will have significantly higher accuracy when searching for German words.

@Andrew: Thanks for the reply, but in Windows XP I can’t change the language of the OS. And in anything but the Vista and 7 Ultimate (and Professional, I think) it’s not something supported by Microsoft.

In most Linux flavors I could and I don’t know how it is on the Mac, but as for me, I can’t choose another language…
besides, it’ such a basic thing!! Every multilingual program should allow the user to change the language!!

    @-Pablo-:

You may want to look at this forum topic for a way to change your language:

It would be really great if you allow people to choose their language for the desktop clients. Is this planned for future versions? Please!
