Update: Version 1.7.2 addresses PDF error messages
A number of users have reported PDF-related error messages when upgrading to our previous release (1.7.1). Today’s update (1.7.2) addresses this issue. Here’s an explanation of what was happening and what to expect from now on.
Whenever possible, Evernote indexes your PDFs looking for searchable text. In some cases, Apple’s built-in PDF handling functionality would encounter a problem finding text inside the PDFs, so we added an error message alerting you to this problem. Unfortunately, some users would become inundated with these popups. This is now fixed.
To be clear, this error message does not indicate a loss of data. It simply states that there was an issue finding text within the PDF.
In today’s release (1.7.2), we have addressed the multiple popup issue. We will still display an error message if a new PDF proves problematic.

Hasn’t fixed a problem I reported months ago: Evernote on Mac bombs out seconds after loading. It’s still running in the top menu bar, though. Yet “New Note” also bombs out Evernote just after starting too.
MR
Yep- this is happening to me too now after installing this build!
I’ve submitted the error report.
Andrew Sinkov
@Roderick @MR Thanks for submitting the error report. We’ll look into the issue.
Eritt
I’ve never had that problem Roderick, it sounds like you may have some other software issues that are causing that.
Shelley
Just installed the update. I then got a whack of error messages like this:
Evernote was unable to index the PDF ’11 small changes that take off big pounds.pdf’ because of an internal error. You will still be able to view the PDF, but it will not be searchable.
I didn’t count the number of error messages I got, but I suspect that I got one for EVERY pdf that I’ve saved in Evernote. None too happy to find out that they’re no longer searchable!!!
Jeff
Wow – just downloaded the new version and wham – error messages like crazy and it won’t stop. PDF Indexing failed. Evernote #Fail
John
Huge fan and premium user! Love the new app. Is a new version of web app coming soon? That feels like the weakest link based on my usage so far.
Thanks for everything. Love the product! It has become a foundation for everything I do with information.
JLC
Jeez, guess I won’t download the new update. Think I’ll hold off until I hear it’s okay.

Wow, I’m glad I read these comments! I hit “Cancel” on my update download before it could complete. I definitely don’t want all my PDFs messin’ up, I have too many!
I’ll wait for the next update, I guess. =(
Chris
New version just installed…not won’t start without crashing immediately. Error report sent. Help!
Paul
Have you fixed the issue where the evernote clipper plug-in for Safari keeps relocating especially when it’s used along side 1passwords plug-in?
Ramo Phalatsi
Hey Evernote wonder genius people – any word on that PDF fix, getting similar errors to those described above
Ed
Same here: “Unable to index” error messages for every PDF (site snapshot) after updating to version 1.7.1.

Evernote still works perfectly for me after the update – not that I’d noticed any bugs before, but it’s nice to know I’m even less likely to encounter one now!

I like Evernote very well and use it often as possible from the iPhone and Mac desktop app.
Notice that you are active to fix the problems on the desktop application to make it better and more stable. Have generally not had any problems with the versions, but I think it is a bit odd that you have not been corrected the problem with:
- Switching between applications spread over Spaces. When I use an app active in Space 1 and switch to Evernote that is in Space 2, so can not I turn to Space 2, although I have Evernote the menu at the top. Space must switch manually or with the default hotkeys for it.
- To paste text that is copied from the website or any place that has formatted text, so can not I pasted the text of the Evernote that clean format with alt + shift + Cmd + V – I have to go around with pasting in TextMate and copy the text again before I can paste it in Evernote.
I hope these can be fixed in near time now that it has been the biggest problems at the Evernote to now.
Ko
I’ve just downloaded the new version and am having the same problem as Shelly. The second I opened Evernote, the same error messages started to bombard me, saying indexing failed. I forced-quit the software before it counted 1000+, which is all I have. Is there any way to fix this issue?
Jonathan Grauel
Are there any plans for adding tabbed windows for notes? I would love to have this feature.
tom
Same here!
more then 3000 PDF files that can no longer be searched!
What’s happening?
Andrew Sinkov
@tom @ko @ed @ramo and others that are experiencing the PDF error messages. We’re looking into the issue and will have more information in a bit. Nothing about your PDFs has changed. No data is lost. Your content is exactly as it was before the update. This seems to be an problem with the error messaging.
Pastor Dale
The web version is more full-featured than the Mac version. The Mac version really needs to be able to handle multiple levels of list indent for outlining purposes in to do/project management.
Jeremy
Can you put support for Tiger back into Evernote, or offer older builds?
mnassal
To those folks who are experiencing Evernote Mac crashing after update: Running “Disk Utility” > “Fix Permissions” after the update resolved my issues.
andy
argh read this too late … lots of pdf indexing error messages … very annoying – that was definitely the last time I’ve used the auto update … what about testing the changed stuff on OSX before releasing?
Andrew Sinkov
@Andy The error popups will only appear once. You should be fine from here on out.
Josh
I am having the same PDF indexing failed problem. Screen completely overrun with dialog boxes
Sucks because I really really need to search for a pdf right now. Guess I will try web interface.
Tom
Same here. PDF indexing errors out the wazoo after upgrading to 1.7.1 mac version.
JLC
Any update on this? Has it been fixed and can we update?
Mary Ann
This update simply crashes on launch. Can’t re-install. I’ve tried. I notified evernote yesterday. Seems I’m not the only one with issues. I would like evernote to acknowledge here on this blog that there is an issue for some users and they are working on it. I would feel more confident then that the issue was being addressed. All I’ve received so far is the standard “we got your report and are looking into it” email.
TBS
I’m having the exact same issue. UGH!
haj
I’m having the same problem where every PDF is producing an error message “PDF indexing failed” I have thousands of PDF so I’m having to hit return a thousand times. Only a quarter way through. I can’t even get to the “help” menu item within the app until I OK all the windows so I’m posting here. Please HELP ASAP!
Emma
Hi Andrew – The error messages also appear every time a new collection of pdfs is loaded, so not actually fine from here on out.
Phillip Smith
Same problem with error messages after the update.

Wow, I’m glad I only have a few pdf files saved to Evernote — I would’ve been way more vexed by this issue had I been getting 100s or 1000s of error messages like some folks!
Yesterday, after installing the update and getting the pdf indexing error messages, I located a couple of the pdf files, and searched in evernote for a text string that I could see was in the pdf. Not found! So yep, indexing wasn’t working properly.
I was pleasantly surprised this morning to find an email waiting for me (sent very late last night) from the evernote team, saying they’d fixed the issue and asking me if I’d like to download a pre-release of an update. Planned to do that when I got home from work today, but by then, Evernote had already released the fix. I downloaded and installed it as soon as I got home; NO error messages about indexing problems. Best of all, when I went back to the same PDF file that I looked at yesterday and found its contents hadn’t been indexed, and searched again in Evernote for the same text string, that text string DID show up in the search.
Three cheers for the Evernote team! It sucks that the problem happened in the first place, but mistakes DO happen, and the mark of a quality company is their response when problems are reported. It’s pretty rare for things to get fixed this fast.
you guys rock!!!!!
JLC
Hey good job guys! No issues at all after the latest update. Thx!
denise
grumble, the update won’t do it for me. it cancels itself every time. and the pdf errors persist. thousands of files. am not really a fan of those bazillions of dialogs popping up and blocking my mac for quite some time. sigh. not so happy right now.
Joan
Pls. Linux version
MrElliot
I scoured the net looking for the shortcut key for entering a date/time stamp in evernote Mac. Seems like a lot of people are looking for the shortcut key. I use CTRL + ; (Semicolon) at work on my Windows laptop. Please help is there a shortcut? If not please add one. Thanks.
Jeff Jones
I would love this capability as well. I keep single notes with many updates in them, and would the ability to quickly put a Date/time stamp before each update. You can do this in Windows with a keyboard shortcut, so why not on a Mac?
Thanks- Jeff
Bill
This seems like a basic feature. Where is it?
Espree
Has the time stamp feature for MAC been addressed?
Brandon
The new Mac version on my computer keeps crashing within 10 seconds of loading also! Very frustrating!
Tamsin
Arrgh – Evernote won’t start after newest install. Tried repairing permissions as suggested above.
I need my Evernote working desperately and quickly! (organising a funeral).

I love Evernote on my Mac, but when will it support hand writing like it in Windows? I just bought a Bamboo Pen & Touch, it is useless under Mac right now, sad ; (
DONG Li
I want handwriting in Mac!!!
fred
I’d be happy to finally get the sketching ability the windows version has. Some of us actually store ideas and such in visual form…. Is it too much to ask for same features across desktop platforms?
DONG Li
Absolutely~ : ). With handwriting, I can sketch some characters that can not be input by keyboards, such as math formula. And Mac is my main working platform!
David Dare
I would also love to see the handwriting functionality for my Mac!
Leonor
I want to do handwriting with Mac. For me that’s cool
lnxos
+1 native linux version…apparently newest version is no longer incompatible with wine.
Zarch
ever since the update it starts, pops up a note, then crashes. Kinda got screwed over in a presentation. Can’t afford to ever rely on it again. My mistake I guess.
Lea
The present version of Evernote is impossible to to installed and urn properly on a 10.4.11 of Mac OS X. I’ve spoken to a lot of people who are using this version and they are having the same problems when trying to run Evernote 1.7.1-2. Would it be possible like you did with Windows, to leave the option of operating with a previous version of Evernote, one that does accept this rather spread version of Mac (10.4.11).
Thanks,
Lea
Mike
When will we see Bamboo + Mac ???

HELP!
Evernote refuses to launch. I’ve installed latest version, restarted, tried everything and still no luck. I can see my notes online, so know they’re there, but it’s really starting to waste my time now.
Any help gratefully received.

Cheekygeek
Really disappointed this does not work with 10.4.11.
The download page I was on said 10.4.6 was all that was required.
Is there a previous version that can be downloaded?
wileybadger
Guess I should have come here first. I just installed and it does not work. I would have thought it would have been fixed by now. Wish I hadn’t updated my MAC before I downloaded EVERNOTE
Elena
After auto-update on mac evernote is totally dead. Really frustrating.
