Hi, Kasey here with the latest from our ‘Did You Know?’ blog series. Ron (of Ron’s Tips) and I will be writing about different Evernote features and how to make the most of them. We hope that both new and existing users will find some helpful nuggets in these posts to help maximize your Evernote experience.
Evernote lets you capture anything you might want to remember — be it an image, a file, a handwritten, audio note or a quick, typed reminder. With most of us spending hours every day surfing the web for work, school, and fun, it’s not surprising that the things we want to remember are often found online.
How clipping from the Web with Evernote works

Have you downloaded one of our Web Clipper extensions for your browser of choice? You can download clippers for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer and then clip anything from the web and immediately have it saved to your Evernote account.
Each clipper works a little differently (depending on your browser), but their end goal is the same — to help you grab anything you might want to remember from the web, and always be able to find it later. When you clip a selection from the web and sync your Evernote account, you’ll be able to access that clip on any computer or device where you have Evernote installed.
Here are some of the ways that you can use the Evernote Web Clipper:
- For comparison shopping: when you’re browsing sites like Amazon and Crate and Barrel, clip products you like (along with prices). Pull them up on your phone when you’re out shopping.
- For gift ideas (for yourself and others): keep track of gift ideas as you come across them. Maybe there’s a great barbecue set for your dad for Father’s Day, or the perfect book for your best friend’s birthday. Tag your clips with ‘Gift Ideas’ or ‘Want.’
- For research: clip articles from the web and save them to a research notebook in Evernote. Writing a thesis or a business plan? Refer to your research notes in Evernote as you build on the document.
- For travel planning: capture recommendations from trusted travel websites and travel deals in Evernote. Save to your travel or trip notebook. Scroll through everything you’ve found when you get to the booking phase.
- For recipes: clip recipes from your favorite recipe sites, blogs, and newspapers. Save them to your Evernote account and tag with ‘recipes’ or ingredients. Make notes like: “Make for Sunday dinner” right inside of the clipped recipe.
- For inspiration: whether you are planning a wedding or redecorating your house, clip anything that inspires you around the web. DYI projects from design*sponge and ReadyMade, wedding placecards from Style Me Pretty, wine openers from Etsy, sneakers from Cool Hunting, etc.

Every browser is different and Evernote takes advantage of each browser’s unique capabilities. In all of the browsers, you can choose to clip a whole page or just a selection from a page. We recommend highlighting the section you’re interested in before clipping, so you capture the stuff you really want to remember.

Cool benefits of web clipping with Evernote
As with all of your notes, your web clips are super searchable — meaning Evernote will even scan your clipped web images for text. The URL associated with the clip will also be automatically embedded in your note, so if you are doing a research project, for example, you’ll always be able to go back to the original source to add the proper citation.
Clip it from your desktop, pull it up on your phone
Web clipping is sort of like creating your own ‘best of’ list – it’s curated and customized by you and for you. When you clip something from the web to Evernote, you can quickly pull it up on your phone, without having to re-launch your web browser.
Site Memory
If you are a website or blog publisher, check out the Evernote Site Memory button. When you add it to your site, the button will allow visitors to add content from your site directly to their Evernote account in a clean, visually-appealing format. Hi: I miss the old clipper, which allowed me to basically take mini-screenshot and circle items or add notes. I can’t figure out how to get the new one do to anything else than just send the entire page to my account. Can you do a video to show what I am doing wrong? Thanks!

Diane, you can still take screenshots. If you’re on Windows, there’s an Evernote clipper in the Task Bar that allows you take screenshots. On Mac, it can be found on the Menu Bar. These are different from the clippers you install for individual browsers.

You can click the elephant icon in your task or menu bar (depending on whether you are working on Windows or Mac). From there, you can select to clip a rectangle or window (which will bring up crosshairs for you to frame the clip) or select to take a screenshot of the entire screen.

Thanks so much! Is it possible to save to clipboard as well as send to account? It was really the best screenshot tool out there for quick emails too.
And if there is any way to add back the the drawing mode, would be so happy.

I’m a new Mac user…it might be helpful for others to know that the elephant required for clipping is in the top right of the full screen – not the one on the top of the browser. This is apparently called the Menu Bar. Yes, I know, I’m probably a bit slow!

Using the Firefox extension:
When I have it set to “send clips to Evernote web” (such as on my computer at work), when I clip an image, the image doesn’t get saved — only a *link* to the image. (when I’m at my home computer with “send clips to Evernote client”, the image gets saved as I would expect).
Is there any way I can clip actual images (not just links) from a computer that doesn’t have the client application installed (just the browser clipper plug-in)?

This is a problem for me too, and I am up-to-date. Worse, it doesn’t seem to be consistently the menu-item method, the native plugin, or the bookmarklet. It’s incredibly frustrating, especially with things I’ve clipped specifically to have the image and a caption that are rendered useless if a website changes or removes the image. And it’s also awful because there’s no easy way to tell if the actual image was clipped or just the html that loads the image was clipped until the images are broken.

Depending on the number of apps you have running, the icon may get displaced. You can use the default universal command to activate the screenclipper on Mac: CMD+CRTL+C

I’m running OS X 10.6.7 on an iMac. If the portion of the page I want to clip extends beyond the limit of the screen, I can’t clip it because, when I invoke the crosshairs, the screen won’t scroll beyond the limits of the screen. I don’t want to clip the whole web page. I have tried everything and am frustrated. There must be some way to do this.

I’ve switched to Safari on the Mac because the clippings come out so much better than tge Firefox or Chrome ones, which seem to be not much better than the bookmarklet. Copying and then command-control-v from these other browsers maintains more formatting but you lose the URL metadata.

Any plans to allow local clipping in Chrome, like in Firefox and Safari? I use Chrome almost exclusively, but the web clipping doesn’t work nearly as well as clipping directly into a local note in Evernote.

Chrome and Firefox 4 both seem to use an odd fake-native method. I too find this distinctly less useful and pleasant than the true native method.

Hi,
I use Evernote on my Mac and Firefox and it is awesome. However, when I am on a webpage and want to simply save the page via the Evernote clipper, there is always a ton of “junk” i.e. adds and links inevitably saved on the top of the webpage and many times I end up cutting & pasting the “junk” from the top of the clipped note?

The JavaScript bookmarklet is incredibly slow.

The work-around I use is to put content I want in Evernote into Instapaper or Pinboard until I can clip it with my laptop. Javascript is taxing for many mobile devices, but I don’t know if Evernote can compensate for that or are limited by the capabilities of the available technology.

I recently uploaded to Firefox 4 on the Mac. Now when I clip a page to Evernote, that tab refuses to disappear when I try to close it. The tab no longer can be accessed, but the tab for it remains in view at the top and it screws up the functioning of other tabs. I have the most recent Evernote.

I’m on an ibook g4 from 2000 or 2001. i cannot update to 10.5, so i can’t use the updated version of evernote. i used the previous version without trouble using a menu item “clip to evernote”. the link has disappeared! how can i clip if i can’t use an evernote webclipper?

I recently installed updates on my Mac (10.6.8), including a Safari update, and now the web clipper is gone (and no longer available in the Extensions gallery) and when I option-click, all of the Evernote selections have also disappeared. What gives? Are they included in 10.7?

Hi Susan, We don’t support Web Clipping on iPad because Apple doesn’t support extensions on the Safari mobile browsers. However, we have heard of workarounds from folks, including emailing your Evernote account (you can find your email in the Preferences).

Can I save web clippings from my android phone?

Hi there. I’ve been using Evernote for a few months now and really enjoy it. I am wondering what happened to the web clipper though. I used to be able to clip from the web and choose what notebook I want it to go to, or add tags, right there on the webpage (after hitting the web clipper icon). Now, after the most recent updates, I hit the web clipper icon and am given the choices of clipping the article, the whole page or the hyperlink. I make the selection – and it goes to Evernote on my computer – BUT — it goes to my default notebook. I didn’t get to choose where it goes, and I didn’t get to tag. I have to go back into Evernote on my computer, find it, and move it to the notebook I want and add tags. Why is this? What am I doing wrong? I am not a premium user, but I used to be able to do this. I am running the most current Firefox version (8?). Thanks in advance. Wendy

I have the same question as Wendy. I can clip websites, articles etc, but everything goes to my default notebook. I can’t save it to individual notebooks. Even though it gives me the option to choose a different notebook. I choose a notebook from my dropdown list, I click Clip Article and then it goes right to my default notebook. I’m on a Mac using Chrome.

I’m actually wondering if its possible to clip things to my notebook in a way that will strip all the formatting, fonts, pull quotes, photos, etc and just give me text?
I’m currently using firefox and the evernote for Mac desktop.

I noticed that when I use the full page clipper it pulls in an html version of the page in so that if the layout is fluid it changes on my evernote window. Question is this page fully archived. For instance, what happens when the design and html resource files change – does the web clip change. I’d like to use the full page clipper as an archiver.

Same issue as Wendy. The web clipper in Chrome does not ask me what notebook or what tags to put on it, so I have to go into Evernote and do that manually. I am a Premium user.

There is an option to select which notebook it will go into, but it doesn’t work. It always goes to my default notebook regardless of which one I select.

I did not realize that the web clipper was no longer working with the new Mac OS! So anyway, I downloaded the new web clipper and now there are two elephants on my Safari browser. How can I remove the older one?
