[UPDATE 10/6: New version available that fixes double spacing, makes Helvetica default font and resolves certain iOS 5 crashes.]
Today, Evernote for iOS (v 4.1.2) gets a number of much-requested enhancements. We’ve improved text handling, made sharing more powerful, added the ability to make checkboxes, and much more. Let’s dive into the details.
Improved formatting
Our last iOS update was one of the biggest ever, mainly because it added support for editing rich text notes. Today’s update makes that functionality even better. Here’s how:
- Better simplified text: When trying to edit a complex note with elements that cannot be edited, Evernote presents an option to simplify the text. This process preserves many of the elements in the note, and removes others (tables, fonts and CSS styles are not preserved). Today’s update improves this functionality significantly to give you a simplified version that is as true to the original as possible, including preserving images, files and encrypted elements.
- Better font handling: Evernote for iOS preserves your default font settings, so content edited on iOS will display in the correct default font when viewed on the desktop.
- Encrypted elements appear in-line:If a note that you’re editing contains encrypted text, the encryption will now be shown in-line.
Edit notes in shared notebooks
If you’re a Premium user, then you can grant others editing rights to your notebooks—even if they aren’t Premium. Now, you can add your thoughts to someone’s notes even when you’re away from your desk. Simply open the shared notebook from your iOS device and edit an existing note or create a new one. Once the note syncs, everyone else that has access to that note will see the changes.
Checkboxes!
You can now create checkboxes from your iPhone or iPad. Make lists, to-dos and just about anything else. Simply click on the checkbox option in your note editor.

iOS 5
This version supports the shiny, new iOS 5. You’ll be seeing lots of cool new functionality and improvements very soon thanks to the features available in this new operating system.
More on the way
This update is full of big improvements, but there’s still more to come. Tell us what you think. We’re always listening.

Checkboxes and a new iPhone on the way!
Now if you could get Textexpander to work, that’ll be the greatest EVAR!!!

Woot! Thank you! Now I can quit using 3 or 4 different apps for checklists & grocery shopping! Thanks for the improvements!
Daryl
Glad that Checkboxes have now made it into the iOS version!

Thanks for a great update!
It would be nice to have the ability to choose multiple tags, though. Is this to be expected in a future update?
Hilmar
Awesome, my girlfriend and I waited so long for editing shared notebooks and now not only that but even creating checkboxes work

Better font handling is the one i am waiting for, i am taking notes in lessons when i’m trying to view in my Pc, it looked wierd but with that it became wonderful

Is there a way to change the default font if Times New Roman?
Is there a way to not double space the text?
Thanks!
Carolyn
Yes i would also like to know now to set the default font to something other than Times Roman. It seems that you can only work in the default font and then change your document otherwise if you make other additions, it those bits show up as Times roman. I work better in my own font choice.
Thanks
Carolyn

The whole checkbox thing is not well thought out on iPhone. You have to switch back n forth between the check box button and the keyboard. Way too much work just to create a checkbox.
stefan olsson
it would have been useful if there was a tab button in the toolbar
Lynda
My husband loves that I put the honey-do lists on Evernote (not joking). Now he will have checkmarks too.
Mark
I really dislike the Times New Roman font on the iPad. Would much prefer Arial or Helvetica for my default font (like I have on my Macbook Pro).
Nathan
a option for a switch for the double-spacing would be nice!
Robert Rose
No tab key. No tabs in billeted lists. Not a very helpful update.
Rob
There are some funky bugs still in this version such as the magnifier not showing up when trying to set an insertion point in editing mode & occasional unexpected app quits.

I am trying to see if I can use Evernote effectively for the GTD (Getting things done methodology). Under iOS (iPhone) I have not found the ability to see and/or set tags. Have I missed something? If not, is this a feature you are considering for future releases?
Kasey Fleisher Hickey
Chuck, to set tags, click on the ‘i’ at the top of your screen to add tags to a note on your iPhone.

This is great! Just missing notebook stacks in IOS now.
Mary
any idea when Notebook stacks will come to IOS?
Teresa
Awesome! Was waiting for the checkboxes. That rocks. I’m with Carl, if you get a chance to add textexpander to the functionality I would be so very happy. But for now it’s fantastic. Thanks so much!
John
I love Evernote, and I’m happy to have an iOS 5 release. One thing though – I can’t zoom in on PDFs like I used to. I like to store maps of the Tokyo subway system as PDFs in Evernote. But without pinch to zoom, the maps are too tiny to read.

Thanks for letting us know.

I just noticed this issue as well. Thank you for being such a wonderful team of developers that work with your customers to improve your product. Evernote is fantastic!

I’m still getting crashes trying to sync offline notebooks on iPad and iOS 5. I had given up on hoping for this since Evernote made it clear they wouldn’t support the beta. VERY disappointed they turned around to support the beta, and then didn’t fix the biggest bug that paying customers face.
Pavel
Evernote IS great app. Unfortunately 4.1.3 version is crashing on sync on IOS 5 GM.
Andrew Sinkov
Try uninstalling and reinstalling. That tends to fix crashing issues.
Hollie
Thank you! This is a wonderful addiction to Safari.

Hi,
Is The Editing Two Way? As In When I Share A Note From My iOS Device or My Desktop To My Friends, My Friends Are Able To Access & Edit The Note From Their iOS Device.
Andrew Sinkov
By default, sharing is read-only, meaning that your friends can see your content, but can’t edit it. If you’re a Premium subscriber, then you can allow others to edit your content too.

The ability to zoom in on documents through Evernote disappeared with the latest update.
Andrew
When will we get tabs. I currently use Word for everything in school because the majority of my classes use an outline form. Please insert tab stops and I would greatly enjoy if you would allow outlines like Word. Thanks.
Wizzo
Can not zoom on PDFs or even simple text notes since upgrading to ios5
naheed
I see the zooming issue was posted/realized on Oct 7 – just wondering when it’s expected to be resolved? I’m always using Evernote for my train maps & I miss it!
Andrew Sinkov
We’ve identified and fixed this zooming issue. We’re submitting the update to Apple shortly.

Still having problems with Evernote crashing on my iPad whilst downloading headers – is this just me?
And/or does anyone know of a fix?
Zach Putnam
Enable stacks for iOS, please! I’m a huge fan and proponent of Evernote, but this is a crucial feature to make the iOS versions fully functional. Thanks for all your hard work and a great product!
Thorben
Hi I just got myself an ipad and I would LOVE to see a plain & simple list view mode in the ipad app!
I have tons of notes where only the header is relevant. Since I only use the list view on my mac & windows device, the absence of the list view render the ipad app as almost unusable for me.
Please add that asap!

Why evernote for ios 5 so slow for typing?
Ravi Desai
Is there a plan to add Tab in the Ipad version ? It will be very useful when taking notes or brain storming an outline.
thanks,
Ravi
Johan
can someone plz confirm that is in fact not possible to change the font that will be used in an evernote app?
it is hard coded to use the system font?
if so can someone tell me why evernote cant let us do that when even apple’s own built in low level app can provide us with at least that option?
And finally if this is something that will be adressed in the future?
Or is it time to ask instead “Does anyone know how to change the system font?”
Confuzed and amazed.
