Evernote for Mac gets improved sync performance

Product updates | By Andrew Sinkov

A few days ago we released an update to Evernote for Mac (v 1.9.0). That update didn’t contain a ton of features, but it did have a notable one. Also, it appears that users running old versions of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), may experience some issues with this update. More on that below.

Much faster sync

This update dramatically improves note synchronization. If your Evernote use involves creating and updating single notes, then you may not notice the improvement. But, if you were to get a new Mac, install Evernote, and do a full sync, then you would be blown away by the increased speed.

This sync improvement is part of a larger, and very important, Evernote story. We created Evernote knowing that it would outlast most of our computers and devices. In my few years with the company, I’ve gone through four phones and three laptops. Whenever I get a new computer, I install Evernote and sync my notes, and *poof* everything is right with the world.

The longer Evernote is around, the larger the accounts our users will have–there’s also a tendency for user to upgrade to Premium over time, which means larger file sizes and more file attachments. That’s why we’re now beginning to focus a lot of our effort on improved performance for larger accounts. This sync speed increase is part of that plan. You’ll be seeing speed and reliability enhancements like this throughout Evernote in the coming weeks and months. That way, your second brain stays as snappy as ever.

Older versions of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Some users have reported issues when running this latest update on older version of Mac OS X 10.5, aka Leopard. We’re looking into this and hope to find a resolution. In our testing, it appears to affect 10.5.5 and 10.5.6. If you use these versions, we recommend updating to the latest, 10.5.8. It’s free from Apple.

LOL, I totally read that last sentence like Mario: “It’s a free! from Apple!”

Not trying to poke fun, just thought I would share my thought. :)

Thanks. Now that’s stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

WAHOO!!!!! I have had to sync evernote on 5+ computers, and it’s always been a pain. This is great news!

Doesn’t fix the “can’t declare any more prefixes”-bug though

Will this fix the dreaded Android app java error?

    • Andrew Sinkov

That issue is on the Android side. We should have the update for Android very soon.

Is there a way for premium users to NOT have a local copy and just keep everything in the cloud? I’m at over 3GB and afraid of the growth.

    Thanks.

+1 on the Android problem. This is a serious problem that has taken way too long to fix. I have been a loyal paid Evernote subscriber since July 2008. Since getting my Android phone I have been a frustrated/crippled user. Hoping “soon” is truly in the next few days. I hope Evernote understands how frustrating this bug and the slow response has been to your user base. This needs to be a top priority. Evernote + Mac = useless right now.

    Thank you.

We fully understand your frustration and are working to get the issue resolved as soon as possible.

WooHoo!!! Fantastic! You did it! The Android update released this morning has resolved the problem. Evernote is 100% usable now with Mac + Android combination. So glad to see this. Thanks and congrats to the team on resolving this issue. Back to 100% recommend.

Now off to tweet the good news…

Running OS X 10.6.3 on a 2.4 GHz Intel Mac Book Pro & Evernote Version 1.9.0 (83438) and keep getting this:

Sync failure: unexpected transfer error Synchronization failed because of an unexpected data transfer error with the Evernote servers. If the problem persists, please contact Evernote technical support.

Such a groupie… One request though, please drag and drop for PDFs ( to MAC desktop/ files) as it is so hard to get PDFs from Evernote. Otherwise, amazing work and keep it up!!!!

Just flipped through a multi-page .pdf on my mac today and noticed that evernote was about 100% faster. Thanks guys, great work!
