[UPDATE 10/6: New version available that fixes double spacing, makes Helvetica default font and resolves certain iOS 5 crashes.]

Today, Evernote for iOS (v 4.1.2) gets a number of much-requested enhancements. We’ve improved text handling, made sharing more powerful, added the ability to make checkboxes, and much more. Let’s dive into the details.

Improved formatting

Our last iOS update was one of the biggest ever, mainly because it added support for editing rich text notes. Today’s update makes that functionality even better. Here’s how:

  • Better simplified text: When trying to edit a complex note with elements that cannot be edited, Evernote presents an option to simplify the text. This process preserves many of the elements in the note, and removes others (tables, fonts and CSS styles are not preserved). Today’s update improves this functionality significantly to give you a simplified version that is as true to the original as possible, including preserving images, files and encrypted elements.
  • Better font handling: Evernote for iOS preserves your default font settings, so content edited on iOS will display in the correct default font when viewed on the desktop.
  • Encrypted elements appear in-line:If a note that you’re editing contains encrypted text, the encryption will now be shown in-line.

Edit notes in shared notebooks

If you’re a Premium user, then you can grant others editing rights to your notebooks—even if they aren’t Premium. Now, you can add your thoughts to someone’s notes even when you’re away from your desk. Simply open the shared notebook from your iOS device and edit an existing note or create a new one. Once the note syncs, everyone else that has access to that note will see the changes.

Checkboxes!

You can now create checkboxes from your iPhone or iPad. Make lists, to-dos and just about anything else. Simply click on the checkbox option in your note editor.

iOS 5

This version supports the shiny, new iOS 5. You’ll be seeing lots of cool new functionality and improvements very soon thanks to the features available in this new operating system.

More on the way

This update is full of big improvements, but there’s still more to come. Tell us what you think. We’re always listening.

Thank you! This is a wonderful addiction to Safari.

    Hi,

Is The Editing Two Way? As In When I Share A Note From My iOS Device or My Desktop To My Friends, My Friends Are Able To Access & Edit The Note From Their iOS Device.

    • Andrew Sinkov

By default, sharing is read-only, meaning that your friends can see your content, but can’t edit it. If you’re a Premium subscriber, then you can allow others to edit your content too.

The ability to zoom in on documents through Evernote disappeared with the latest update. :(

When will we get tabs. I currently use Word for everything in school because the majority of my classes use an outline form. Please insert tab stops and I would greatly enjoy if you would allow outlines like Word. Thanks.

Can not zoom on PDFs or even simple text notes since upgrading to ios5 :-(

  • naheed

I see the zooming issue was posted/realized on Oct 7 – just wondering when it’s expected to be resolved? I’m always using Evernote for my train maps & I miss it! :)

    • Andrew Sinkov

We’ve identified and fixed this zooming issue. We’re submitting the update to Apple shortly.

Still having problems with Evernote crashing on my iPad whilst downloading headers – is this just me?
And/or does anyone know of a fix?

Enable stacks for iOS, please! I’m a huge fan and proponent of Evernote, but this is a crucial feature to make the iOS versions fully functional. Thanks for all your hard work and a great product!

  • Thorben

Hi I just got myself an ipad and I would LOVE to see a plain & simple list view mode in the ipad app!

I have tons of notes where only the header is relevant. Since I only use the list view on my mac & windows device, the absence of the list view render the ipad app as almost unusable for me.

    Please add that asap! :)
