1GB per month is probably overkill if everything you upload is just text-based. But when you throw in pictures, that adds up quickly.

I think it's both storage/bandwidth AND optical character recognition (OCR). There's an Evernote blog post about it
http://blog.evernote.com/tech/2011/11/01/even-grittier-details-on-evernotes-indexing-system/

My guess is this OCR is the bottleneck...if they let unlimited uploads, most of their storage would be images/PDFs, which all must be run through their advanced OCR (which is more intense than normal OCR, if you read the post above). This is probably why they only slowly let the per-month upload allowance increase (remember, they started at 500mb before, now 1gb, and recently you can buy more than 1gb). I *guess* they need to make sure they have the processing power to handle it as well, not just throw in more hard drives.

This is a great option for those a few months when some of us had more than 1GB to upload. It provides a temporary ceiling bump-up while keep the base fee steady. Thanks for offering this option.

As far as I know, that's not possible -- but as a workaround, you can:

1) Find out your personal evernote e-mail address. Everything mailed there will be stored in a note. (There's a blog post about this).
2) Forward the e-mail to the above address.
3) If you want to "add" the e-mail to an existing note, select the e-mail note and the other one, right click and select merge.

I know it's not the most elegant thing, but it'll work well as long as you're not doing it a hundred times :)

I think it is a matter of a sustainable business model. With a limited per month upload, they can map out how much storage they will need at any given point in the future by only knowing how many users they have and which of their users are premium subscribers. Unlimited upload would be unsustainable because some users could upload several GB per month.

I think that is a great suggestion, and parallels similar options from many on-line services. Everyone realizes that servers cost money to but and maintain, so charging and imposing limits makes sense. But paying more to get more also makes sense.
With so many EN users, one-size-fits-all can usefully expanded to pay for what you need.
