Web Clipping is one of our favorite Evernote features. With a simple click of our browser extension, you can save just about anything you see online into your Evernote account for permanent safekeeping. Today, we’re taking this one step further. The Evernote Web Clipper for Chrome now lets you clip from Gmail!

Gmail Clipping

Email accounts are much more than a history of conversations. They contain photos, research, files, purchase receipts, travel itineraries, and just about everything in between. The trouble with email is that with thousands of emails in an account, it become incredibly difficult to organize things and find what you need, which is precisely where Evernote excels.

gmailclip

Whenever you receive an important email, simply open it and click on the Web Clipper. The email, along with any attached files, will be saved to Evernote. The Web Clipper grabs only what it can see, so if you want to clip all parts of the conversation, be sure to expand the thread.

You’ll also be able to place it into your notebook of choice, assign any relevant tags and add a note.

Easy to Find

Once in Evernote, the full email conversation appears as a nicely formatted note, that’s tagged and organized however you like. The subject line becomes the note’s title and all the email addresses of recipients show up near the top. If you’re a Premium user, then we’ll also make any attached documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDFs searchable. Upgrade to Evernote Premium

Great for Work

Like many companies, we use Gmail here at Evernote. Using the Chrome Web Clipper helps us spend less time sifting through our email for a specific attachment or image, and more time working efficiently. If you use Evernote at the office too, take a look at Evernote Business.

This was working perfectly for me at the start but now when I try to clip emails from gmail I get the sender name and subject only – the content of the email is a blank white page when it goes through. I have deleted and reinstalled the clipper and reauthorised my credentials but it still won’t send the whole email through. Is this a bug?

    • Ellis Meret

Probably a silly suggestion, but did you try selecting everything, changing color to see if maybe it just changed the format? This happened to me a lot with older MS word versions.

    • Stefan Björk

With version 6.0.3, this has stopped working again.

I agree, this has stopped working for me as well. I have disabled all gmail lab features and extensions.

    brilliant, cheers again Evernote

I am having the same results as Helen Crozier – only in my case email clipping has never worked correctly. I tried reinstalling the web clipper extension, reloading chrome, even rebooting my PC (early 2011 MacBook Pro, latest version of OS X). Sure looks like a bug. This would be an awesome capability if it worked.

Same problem here. Great concept, but all I get is the header and subject line. What gives Evernote?

Yup – it was the ‘preview pane’ feature in Gmail Labs. I turned it off & the web clipper captures the entire selected email. Thanks!

    • John_Pearce

I’d rather have Preview Pane than the clipper.

    Josh,

I cannot get clippings to work in Gmail and I don’t think I have the split pane setting on. I have the little pop up new email option but that is it. Sorry to be a pain, but can you help me?

Adding clippings to Gmail will saving my staff and I a lot of time.

Installed on both Chrome and Firefox. While running a few tests I was frustrated that clipped tests were not showing up in my Evernote file on the computer until hitting the sync button (duh). Is working fine. Thank you.

  • Michael Richards

When will this feature be available on the iPad?

  • Nina Irwin

I have Evernote and Evernote Web Clipper working fine on my desktop and my Kindle; installed it on my laptop today and clipper keeps telling me my password is incorrect but it’s the same one I am using on the other two devices. I was able to get into Evernote on the laptop but not the clipper. What do I do now???

Can the evernote extension work on mobile when browsing?

  • Deb Orth

Is there any way to take a whole folder of a gmail label and clip it to the corresponding folder in Evernote? It would save me a ton of time :)

  • David

Why is this better than using labels in Gmail?

They have to start somewhere, Pam. According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers) the browser share (in general) currently stands at: Chrome ~40%, Internet Explorer ~25%, Firefox ~20%, so I guess they’ll get to you after Internet Explorer?!

    • Boz B

Pretty sure the IE users are stuck in the digital dark ages and are not Evernote users.

  • tresfou

I second this. I won’t have Chrome on my system. what about for Firefox?

  • cgm707

I sure wish the clipper would work on Safari.

  • Tom Schick

Why not just save things to gdocs instead? You can create folder names there too, right? Isn’t everything in gmail already searchable?

  • Cherie Reynhout

How about web clipping on the iphone browser? (safari)

  • Jim Wood

I got the same message. Any ideas?

  • heidisloss

I use this on my lap top, but would like it on my tablet too. Does it exist for tablets? I use the Motorola Xoom and use chrome and gmail. I mostly read my email on my tablet through an outlook app.

  • davidsol

Can you use it in Safari for Mac? Is there a way to create a script to pull out of Apple Mai?

  • rockky

I do more than 90% of my Evernote work from my Samsung Note.. …will the Android clipper ever work similarly?
    Thanks

  • Pablo Pérez Benítez

I don’t like Chrome. Firefox rules.

  • Tracey Smith

So, basically I don’t need to bother paying for powerbot. Have been doing the free trial, but from what this article says, it sounds like I can do the exact same thing powerbot does with Evernote web clipped. I already have it installed, just haven’t ever used it on gmail…about to go try that right now :)

  • Jose Cervantes

Pretty cool, looking forward to trying it out. :)

  • Mikeyjax

Can you use Android Tablet with Chrome or Gmail for web clipper

  • BJEvS

How does one know if the comments pertain to the WEB or LOCAL code/use (maybe these work or fail the same?! And if comments are about the FREE vs PREMIUM Evernotes?

  • George Zhu

Sometimes the notebook can not be loaded when I tried to save pages to evernote, can you tell what may be the reason for that?

  • Prarinya Kamta

” The Web Clipper grabs only what it can see, so if you want to clip all parts of the conversation, be sure to expand the thread.”
Could someone please explain what that means? I searched the blog and support pages, but can’t find any info on how to “expand the thread.”
BTW, I love EN and use the web clipper a lot! Blog articles here and on LifeHacker have helped me use it more effectively. Great work, guys. I do wish the mobile app wouldn’t require so many detailed permissions, though.

  • Cliff Tam

Does Evernote Clipper picks up attachment from an email as well?

  • Cliff Tam

I just try now and it doesn’t save any attachments :(

I am having a problem with clipping gmail content using the chrome evernote web clipper. This function used to work but now all that appears is the header info for the email, not the email content. Any ideas on how to fix this??

  • groundedGeek

Would very much like to see this work with Preview Pane… it’s a much better Gmail experience, so it’d be nice to have both. Any possibility in a future update?

  • Fred

Would like to see this for Firefox.
