Dramatically changing something that’s used by millions of people daily can be a daunting task. You have to be sure that the new product is smarter, more powerful and friendlier than anything that came before. That’s why we’re so excited about the all new Evernote 5 for Windows; it’s totally different and better than ever.

The auto-update for existing Windows users will begin within a week. If you don’t want to wait, download now and install.

The New Look

In the years since we first launched Evernote for Windows, a lot has changed in the world of application design. With Evernote 5, we’re embracing modern aesthetics to bring you a beautiful, flat interface that feels at home on multiple versions of Windows. By stripping unnecessary elements, we’ve made it easier to browse and create notes. Anything that might have distracted you from achieving your goals is gone.

Faster Everything

The simpler look isn’t the only thing that makes using Evernote better. We’ve also added new features to help you quickly get to where you need to be.

card_view1

Shortcuts
At the top of the left panel is the Shortcuts area. Think of Shortcuts as your quick access point for things that you do frequently. Drag just about anything into Shortcuts, including notes, notebooks (personal or Business), tags, and Saved Searches. Shortcuts are great for jumping to notes from recurring meetings, big work or personal projects, travel planning, and more. No need to search or browse.

Better Organization
Below the Shortcuts area, you have easy access to your Notes, Notebooks and Tags. Click on what you want and the right panel switches into that mode. We find that this simplified view provides greater focus on the task at hand. Of course, if you prefer to see your entire notebook or tag list in the left panel, click the triangle to expand that section.

Evernote Business users are able to filter notebooks and tags by either Business or personal, as well as easily convert personal notebooks to Business notebooks.

Reminders

Evernote is as much about collecting your ideas as it about inspiring actions. Reminders are three features wrapped into one. By clicking on the alarm clock, you’ll pin the selected note into the Reminder list at the top of the Note List, create a to-do item for that note and add alarms to make sure your notes are done on time.

reminder_list3

Reminders are great for keeping your personal and group projects on track. When you share a notebook with friends and colleagues, they can choose to subscribe to the Reminders in that notebook. When they do, they’ll get alerts about upcoming deadlines.

Improved Notes

One of the big changes you’ll find in Evernote 5 is the way that notes are displayed in the Note List. When you click on the Notes section in the left panel, we show all the notes you have access to in a single list. This includes notes that you’ve created, together with notes from shared and Evernote Business notebooks. The benefit of this approach is that you now see everything that matters without needing to go through multiple steps.

Card View
The new Card View mode displays notes as beautiful square cards, which is a great way to visually scan through your notes, especially ones with images. You can switch among the different view modes from the view selector drop down at the top left corner of the notes panel.

Framing Your Notes
The redesigned Note Editor panel perfectly frames your note to let the content shine. For short notes, the frame stays tight with the bottom giving you a better sense of where the note ends. Double click on a note in the Note List to pop it out for distraction-free reading and composition.

Premium Feature: Related Notes
Our Augmented Intelligence team is devoted to making your notes smarter and your Evernote experience more magical. The Related Notes Premium feature is one of their projects. As you type or view a note, Evernote begins searching your account for items that are similar or related to what’s in the current note. As soon as Evernote finds something, it displays the note at the bottom of the note window. With Related Notes, you won’t waste time repeating work that you may have done years ago or that someone else on your team is doing.

Smarter Searching

One of the great new aspects of Evernote 5 is the dramatic improved search.

  • TypeAhead Search: As you begin to type into the search box, Evernote will make predictions based on notes in your account
  • Search Shared Notebooks: You can now search inside notebooks that you’ve joined
  • Saved Search Shortcuts: You can add a Saved Search to the Shortcuts panel

typeahead3

Your Notes on a Map

If you’ve ever wondered where you were when you had that great idea or delicious meal, the new Atlas view will show you. When you use Evernote on your phone, tablet, and some desktops, the app adds your location to the note data. In the beautiful Atlas view, you’ll see these notes plotted on a map of the world. Jogging your memory has never been easier. Find it in the left panel.

And Much Much More

These are just a handful of the dozens and dozens of new features and capabilities packed into Evernote 5 for Windows. We couldn’t be more excited to hear what you think.

We’re Here to Help

Transitioning to something new can be a challenge, so we’re here to help. We have a number of training webinars coming up in the next few weeks to make sure that you make the move without any issues.

Is it just me, or your servers still serve 4.6.7?

    • AndrewSinkov

We’ll be sending an auto-update to existing users in the next few days. If you prefer not to wait, then you can download from the link in this post and install Evernote 5.

Not sure if this is the appropriate area to leave this, but, here goes: Please add some color for the Windows version. On W7 it’s just stark white! Boring! How about option to add different color to individual notes, too?

  • Ryan

Am I missing something, or is EN5 missing the Outlook plugin? I used that FREQUENTLY – as in a few dozen times each day.

  • William Ward

Evernote Team, does the Windows 8 Touch/Metro/Store edition use the same local files as the Desktop edition? Will I need to consume twice the space using both apps on the same computer, and will I need to sync twice for each note? If they use the same data, can I seamlessly go from the full-screen touch edition to the desktop edition as I go mobile and when I return to my desk after a meeting?
I do find this distinction in Windows 8 to be uncomfortable, particularly with things such as Dropbox.

  • Dan

The note sorting option is now nested within the Notes Display (List, Snippet, Card option). More clicks. Other than that, I really like the update.

  • DennisKelley

Extremely disappointed with the “upgrade” to version 5. My Autohotkey scripts won’t work at all with an Evernote note anymore. Also, in past versions I was able to drag a selection of text or a link from another application and just drop it into a note. But no more, as Evernote blocks you from dragging any selection into a note. While there are some nice features in the new version, none of them trumps these issues for me, and I am uninstalling version 5, and going back to an earlier version.

  • Tech

So, this update will be pushed out to users with the Evernote 4 in the next week, right?

  • museislander

My eyes will be much happier when the current fad for flat UIs finally goes by the wayside.

I’ve downloaded the update, and now every second clip caused a Fatal Error that closes Evernote down, without the clip going through. I can’t even send a message and my email in the message box – it also crashed. I want the older version back! How do I get it?????

  • Darren LoPrinzi

Does anyone know how to get the Outlook plug-in button back? It disappeared in Outlook when installing EN5, and now can’t find where to reinstall from. I live by that button – please anyone – Help! (thanks!)

  • Jim Finn

+1 for bring back notebook icons. Nearly 1/3 of my notebooks contain sensitive information the I only store locally (Medical records, Financial records et al) and I liked that I could see at a glance what was local and what was shared.

I take evernote at its word and let it do my remembering for me :-)

Otherwise I don’t hate the new design

It is frastrating there is no option to type and draw on the same app. Any notes would require typing and drawing of some kind of schemes, etc. it should not be difficult to impelment and combine evernote with penultima functionality

I love evernote, however, not sure about evernote 5. I use Saved Searches a lot and in the Evernote 5, this feature is not as useful as it once was. It would be great if saved searches were viewable in the new shortcuts menu options. Also, I dislike the fact that you can not select a notebook and just search for certain tags in it. In older versions of evenote, I could select my notebook and then select my tags and it would be displayed. Then if this is a search I did often I could save it. I could easily switch between my saved searches. In Evernote 5, the saved searches only appear when in the search box, and you have to clear the search before doing a new one. Saved searches only appear when search box is blank. Also you can only search for tags in all notes. .

I like the simple UI, but what’s much too much. The green color in the previous version helped me a quick orientation, but not here. Every time I take a long time before i focused in the black and white I have no significant anchor point. It’s ugly! Please, add white/green themes.

  • Jimmy Jiang

I think Evernote 5.0 is not for me!
The note edit area become less and the UI is more complex than the older.

I was going to download this until I saw something about sub-notebooks no longer being supported. Is this true? I have several “primary” notebooks with “sub” notebooks underneath. If E5 doesn’t support this, I need to seriously consider whether I’ll update or not. Can someone confirm for me, please?

  • JimmyJarnror

Workaround for 2): edit the properties of the shortcut you use to launch evernote (right click on the icon), there you can select maximized as standard.

I do have the same problem as 1) and it’s annoying. as are the missing icons for shared and standard notebooks.

  • vatsansarathy

Yeah, been using that for a few days. However, the new update (released today) has the Ctrl+Click feature to filter by tag listed as an update. Downloading now to see if it works. :)

  • Bill Briggs

    well…I like the upgrade.

  • johmar

Horrible new interface. Had to uninstall and go back to 4. Will not consider upgrading until the Flat UI is changed.

  • oldjove

What? I can’t search by attribute anymore? Why would you get rid of such a useful feature?

  • Scot Newbury

It’s been two weeks since it was stated that auto updates would begin “within the week” – I’m still being told by the software that I’m on the most recent version and no update is available.

Am I missing something? While I know I can do the update manually I would prefer to have the system do it automatically so I don’t have to spend the time on all my machines downloading and upgrading.

When is this going to start?

  • Mark VanOuse

Very nice update. Very, very ugly interface. In fact in all my decades (going back to DOS applications) of computing, I’ve never seen an uglier interface. The developers of Evernote have made a rash assumption: all users must have tons of colorful pictures in their notes and that should be the color of the interface. Wrong. Plenty of us use it for text 95% of the time.

Color. Please. Just a little. How about a little green?

  • HoldenL

You can add saved searches to the shortcut bar.

    1. Click in the search bar at the upper right. Click in the blank area, not on the magnifying glass.
    2. Your saved searches show up in a list. Click and drag them into the Shortcuts bar.

Initially, I clicked one of my saved searches, then tried to drag that command (notebook:”Action Pending” tag:Wwork tag:1-Now), but that didn’t work.

  • B Chris Scott

This update is very buggy and should not of been rolled out yet. Crashes often, and the ui is not designed for power users. It’s trying to be too Macish, and took a turn towards beauty, and minimized functionality.

  • Samantha

I downloaded the beta for this but uninstalled it as it didn’t support my workflow. I’m wondering if they fixed the tag display? The beta was showing ALL of my tags in the sidebar, even those from other people/shared notebooks. It was very cluttered and I only wanted to see my own tags. Is this fixed in the most recent update?

  • stash

I’ve just updated, but it’s so slow, it’s painful. Is anyone else having this problem — and is worth rolling back to the previous version. I’d hate to lose the reminders, but I guess I can do that through the Android app.

  • pongba

well I do love the new UI, I’ve been hoping for an UI redo for years and now it’s finally here, refreshingly clean and elegant. The hover-over effect of menu items does look a bit old-school (XP-ish) though.

My biggest complaint is that every time I mouse-drag the scroll bar, it crashes. And it also crashes a lot when I db-click to open subwindow for notes.

  • bazylu

I love evernote app, but update #5 it’s real suck! What happen? I had to do downgrade for the first time.

  • Hrag Hayrabedian

Yes this has completely screwed up how I work
Something as fundamental as this should not be changed after years of people using it one way, without even consulting the users beforehand. At a minimum people should be allowed to toggle between the 2 behaviours.

Peoples needs to apply tags to ALL notebooks could be much more logically been implemented by double clicking a tag instead of forcing EVERYONE to work in this way

For the first time, I started looking at alternatives to evernote, because of how fundamental this tiny detail is, it’s used hundreds of times a week, and to slow down the process in this way is just unacceptable

Yes this work-around works for a one-off, while adding an extra button to press.
Then when you want to check another tag, you have to remove the tag in the filter, then select another tag

Before you’d just have a notebook selected,
and click a tag, then when you want to view another tag, you just click that one

For the people that want tag selection to apply to all notebooks, isn’t it just easier to have a toggle button, or just double click tags instead?
Ahhhh this behaviour change is driving me nuts

  • Hrag Hayrabedian

Very dissapointing, please allow people to chose their preferences

I love(d) evernote and I depend heavily on it, but I’m very disappointed with these changes and the direction that things are going in

    1. Note titles scrolling off the screen, who thought this was a good idea?

    2. The change in the tagging behaviour, where selecting a tag now applies to all notebooks and not just the one you have selected. Why would you do that? Let’s say there is a 50/50 split between people who prefer the tag to apply to all notebooks and people who want it to apply to selected notebooks. Is it so hard to offer a setting to be able to toggle the behaviour and please everybody? Maybe double-clicking a tag shows the tag for all notes? This is a BIG issue for me and I’m sure a lot of people the use the “Secret Weapon” GTD workflow or just expect that a tag will apply to a selected notebook will be super put off by this change.

    3. Now I have to scroll to find my shortcuts? What’s wrong with having them in the toolbar at the top? What is all that empty space being stockpiled for?

    4. On that note there is just tooo much wasted grey space, I use a horizontal split and there is just a wasteland of grey space between my notes list at the top and note body at the bottom. I can’t understand why this is the case, there is really no need for it.

    5. Umm, where is the green?

    6. Why are users being forced into an order for the sidepanel, (1)Announcements – (2)Shorctuts – (3)Notes – (4)Notebooks – (5)Tags – etc. Ok great we can turn them on or off, but why in 2013 can’t users change the order?

    7. Option to turn related notes off, not very useful, and trying to quickly scroll down to the end of a note has become useless.

Honestly I would have preferred things like the option to colour notebooks, tags. And the mapping thing and reminders are great, but what I’m really hoping for is that the 2 will be combined for location based reminders.

I hope you guys will consider some of the things I’ve said, everyone can be pleased on almost all these points that I have and that other users have just by offering settings for users to customize their experience. Please do that otherwise I for one will have to settle for an alternative.

    • Hrag Hayrabedian

After re-reading my post I sound quite pissy, but realllyyy, I love evernote (or maybe used to) and the work that you have put into it and I don’t want to change to another framework.
There are many different users and an infinite combination of styles and preferences, you cannot please everybody by reading their comments/feeback and implementing them as is because there will always be people who “liked it the way it used to be”.
      Just give us options! Thanks

I’d love to use v5, but v5.0.2 continues to encounter Installer Error 2732 when installing onto Win 7 64 bit Professional Edition.

    Dear Evernote-team,

First of all, I really love your product and use it a lot. That’s why I recommend it to all of my friends and family members who are in need of a tool like this.

The Windows version of Evernote was much superior to the OSX version (and I use both). Why? Because the folders view on the OSX version just doesn’t feel right if you have many many folders (say 100+). Now with the latest Windows version (Evernote 5) you try to make EN look like the OSX version. This is a step backwards.

Also there are many many small issues and bugs in the newest version. For instance:

    * In the global search field I am offered results from tags and folders as well. But if I click on a tag or folder, the tag is not filtered or the folder is not opened.
    * If I hit Ctrl-Alt-N to search for a folder, why is the search field not on top of the folders (like in EN 4)? Also, why aren’t partial searches possible anymore? Say my folder is named notes_project_xyz, why can’t I enter xyz in the search field anymore?
    * I cannot search within a folder anymore. This was possible in EN 4.
    * Why is the global search field not on top of the notes list but on top of the note preview? This is counter intuitive.
    * EN 5 crashes on many occasions. This is not realiable anymore.

Also: EN 4 was looking much better then EN 5. This white look – where folders aren’t green anymore; everything is white?! – looks so blurry. Is this based on DotNet like a couple of years ago?

I’m very disappointed by this version of Evernote and will stick to EN 4 as long as it is possible.

How do we drag and drop tags onto notes quickly if we have to scroll all the way down to the tags section every time we went to do that?

  • Curtis Turner

Still too constraining. Why the column layout only…. all this screen real estate and you only have 1 layout… This is why I use google drive now. + 15GB free storage.

Agree with the idea of being able to ‘star’ notes as with emails in Gmail.

  • Jim Sewell

If you change to List View and drag the divider between the titles and the note being shown to the bottom of the page you can approximate this. HTH

  • Marc Delorne

Well, thank you both for your answers, but my notes are not just random notes, so tags are not random tags. They are *structured* in a whole system and the only way to do that was by tags (other than creating dozens of notebooks). I have tens of notes for every action and tags behave like bookmarks. To give you an example from agriculture, let’s say you have notes on preparing the soil, seeding, watering, harvesting (actually a lot more steps and sub-steps, you can’t even have the whole structure in mind or on one screen) and this was the correct order. It would make no sense to put harvesting somewhere long before seeding! I’m so disappointed Evernote removed the feature to move around your tags and never put it back again. I tried to put numbers before the lettered tag, but what do you do when you have to add extra steps between some tags.
Colm, stacks are still alphabetical and tags are still alphabetical inside?

Whoops – forgot to reply to my own post. I solved it about 15 minutes later (funny, since I’d spent 3 hours trying to figure it out before posting). The problem was that the upgrade had somehow disabled the Outlook plug in. I re-enabled it in the Outlook Trust Center, and it works fine.I found one bug, but that may be an isolated issue with that one note I added, so I’ll do some more testing before calling it a valid bug.
