Our Web Clipper for Safari takes a huge leap forward today. The goal of this complete redesign was to make the clipping experience more beautiful while adding a huge new set of functionality on top of what you’re used to. In addition to saving the interesting things you see online, you can now switch into a reading view, add shapes and annotations to your clips, share your clips on social networks, and much more. It’s a whole new Web Clipper and we think you’re going to love it.

Get the Web Clipper for Safari »
Existing users: restart Safari to update. New users: first install, then restart Safari.

New Clipping Options

Whenever you stumble across something that you want to save, you now have a few great options to choose from.

Article Clip
Choose Article Clip and the Web Clipper will automatically detect and save only the main body of the article, leaving everything extra behind. Use the arrow keys or the plus/minus icons if you want to add to, remove from or shift the selected area.

webclip_article

Simplified Article
We brought features from our Clearly extension into the Web Clipper letting you switch the page into a clean, distraction-free reading mode. In this view, multi-page articles become one, long scrollable page. If you don’t have time to finish reading, simply clip the article into Evernote for later.

Better Bookmarks
As part of the redesign, we’ve added a new Bookmark option. When you choose this, the Web Clipper saves the page title, a short snippet of text about the page and thumbnail along with the page URL into Evernote. It’s significantly more useful than the URL alone.

Screenshots and Annotations

Whether you’re working on your holiday shopping, planning a remodel or just browsing the web, you’ll find the Web Clipper’s new markup features indispensable. When something catches your eye, open the Web Clipper then choose Screenshot or one of the new annotation options to draw attention to specific things that you like. As soon as you start annotating, the Web Clipper snaps an image of the visible screen area. When you’re done, the marked up image will be saved to your Evernote account.

Clip and Share

Another new feature in this update is the ability to clip and share your discoveries with friends on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or over email. If you make annotations to the clips, then your share link will point into an Evernote shared note. Otherwise, the share link points right back to the source.

webclip_share

Smart Filing

This new Web Clipper not only looks great, it’s smart too. Whenever you clip a page, the Web Clipper will automatically select the appropriate notebook and tags based on your past behavior. If you disagree with the suggestion, you can always click into the notebook and tag section to make your changes. That’s also where you go if you want to re-title the clip or add some notes about it.

Share your Feedback

All the additions make it more powerful, more useful and more fun than ever. We hope you like it. Let us know what you think.

This announcement comes 5 minutes after I had a need to clip 3 articles using the older, more clumsy Safari clipper. Thanks!

Tried to post on this yesterday … still in moderation. Now this!

You’re killing me here, with the updates to everything mobile and Safari, but still the janky old bookmarklet Web Clipper in Mobile Safari!

Seriously, have you tried this on an iPhone? The Save button is OFFSCREEN. Unusable. Yes, you can’t do an extension for mobile Safari, I get that. But seems like it would be trivial to redesign the size of your Web Clipper save window to be usable on the number one mobile browser in the world today.

    OKthxbye.

    • timelady

Having praised the Safari one to high heavens, I must state iOS clipping remains a revolting experience.

How do I downgrade to the previous version of the web clipper? This one clearly is not ready for primetime.

If you have the layout issues that we see on some pages we are releasing a fix for that very soon. What has not worked for you?

      • usedbywho

The layout issue is annoying. I have to disable the clipper temporarily to load some pages. Any ETA for the fix? Thanks.

        • Jakob Bignert

The fix was released as version 6.0.4 on Monday 11/18.

Wait, Safari before Firefox? Psh. Psh I say. ;)

    Finally!!

  • robert salsbury

So what happens to clipping on iOS devices now?

  • flowerm

I, for one, am impressed with the new web clipper. Thanks!

  • DMKT

Thank you! I’ve been really missing Clearly on Safari. Glad to finally have it there.

Fix Glitches PLEASE! This makes Safari completely useless to me while signing into my school’s blackboard account. It glitches out and has the options, that should be stored away in the sidebar, strewn across the screen. I am unable to click on anything to get to my studies. This is a Burden!

    • Jakob Bignert

We are working on that one.

    • Jessie Ebie

Me too! I notice this problem, only with Safari, and it makes Blackboard impossible to use.

Fixed in version 6.0.4 as of Monday 11/18, please check for an update.

  • Surendra

When is the update coming for firefox ?

    • Jakob Bignert

We are working on the Firefox version.

  • Angela Booth

Love it, thank you! Safari’s my default browser, but I preferred the Chrome clipper — now I don’t have to switch back and forth :-)

  • Dennis Fahringer

Thanks for your work on this. I think it’s great! (If I’m right, you had a similar version out earlier for Chrome.)

  • Jakob Bignert

Yes we’ve confirmed that issue and will have a fix coming very soon.

Evernote (for Mac) keeps getting better and better… how did I ever survive without it?!

  • *:・✧↠Ðюσмị↣ 

So When Evernote clearly will be available for Safari users? :(

  • timelady

This is totally brilliant. I am an Academic (& musician), and I have huge amounts of notebooks for my research, my teaching, and my music – as well as shared ones for recipes, my eldest daughter’s wedding, etc. I clip several times a day, especially when writing a paper, or (as now), working on my thesis. This has just made my life hugely more efficient. I don’t normally gush, but I am stoked for this update. An unexpected gift.

  • Guillermo Carvajal

I’m getting a lot of odd panels on every web page, sorry folks, it seem this new web clipper is a mess

    • Jakob Bignert

Fixed in version 6.0.4. Please update.

      • Nick Benoit

Hate to tell you, but it’s not fixed in all cases. And to be honest, I’m really not interested in getting it fixed. Evernote web clipper is being uninstalled on my system until we can go back to the old, simple, non-browser hijacking behavior. Altering the pages code, adding iframes, CSS classes, etc… Really?

  • pd workman

Yay. I have been waiting for the Safari clipper to catch up to the Chrome clipper. Although it looks like it has some of the same issues as the Chrome clipper… I hate the little red badge showing me that something didn’t clip properly…

I’ve sadly uninstalled Evernote Clipper after the recent downgrade. I’d love to see you progress back to the previous version!

  • redfood

Clipping used to be quick and simple: click the button, type out tags, press enter.

And now the work flow is: click the button, move the mouse over to the side bar, click on the notebook, click or tab over to the tag field, type your tags, mouse over to save, have an annoying overlay pop up over the webpage you are looking at, click on the close button.

Old way: move the mouse, click, type.

New way – move the mouse, click, mouse the mouse again, click, move the mouse again, click, type, move the moue again, click, wait, move the mouse again, click.

This is a bad trend for Evernote. More and more features are making the software more an more cumbersome to use. The same thing is happening on iOS. Workflows are getting slower and more convoluted.

Evernote’s slogan “letting you easily collect and find everything that matters.” These updates are about pushing sharing at the expense of easy collection.

Agreed. This is a case study for feature-bloat. Go back to the old version, we didn’t ask for this!

    • AnotherStrawberryPie

I agree; the new version 6 clipper for Safari is ridiculous. It’s as if the Evernote developers don’t use keyboards.

The solution for me has been to revert to the previous version of the safari extension. Here’s how, in case anyone else is as frustrated as I am with the new extension: use a backup copy from your Time Machine backups to replace the file “Evernote Web Clipper.safariextz” in your ~/Library/Safari/Extensions/ directory. First quit Safari, then find this file in a copy of your Time Machine backups, then copy it into that folder (replacing the old extension file), and then restart Safari.

Do this at your own risk, obviously; I take no responsibility whatsoever for any ill effects. It’s been working for me so far, but that doesn’t mean much.

  • John Pane

this new version of the clipper ruined my safari experience. it does something when loading a new window that removes the focus from the search/url bar while I am in the midst of typing.

    • Jakob Bignert

We’re aware of this and working on it, it’s originally a browser bug related to autofocus. We’ll have a workaround published soon.

Loving the new clipper, but there’s one subtle thing that is very annoying: when you click on the clipper, you’re automatically taken to the simplified article screen but the sidebar is immediately hidden. So you just have to go all the way to the top of the screen to pull it out, then all the way to the bottom to press Save. I mean, you’re gonna have to press Save anyway, so why not leave the sidebar open as a default? Otherwise, works perfectly and much, much lighter than the previous version.

    • Jakob Bignert

The Clipper will by default start in the last used mode. If that is Simplified article the sidebar will minimize at the moment. You can change the default action in the options page if you prefer to have more control.

  • KevinL

Whatever fixes you applied in 6.0.4 doesn’t solve my issues. A mess. How do I downgrade? I’ll try this new clipper later.

  • Jeffersonx

It is not working with new update. Many of the links on pages will not work. When I am logged on to my bank, I can not sign off. Once clipper is turned off, it works fine.

  • Molly Gordon

Oh dear! I so dislike the new format. Having to mouse over to the lower right side of the screen to save, having to move to the right to add tags and choose notebooks–all much less user friendly and intuitive. And the added glitches make it unusable. I used to use Evernote Web Clipper many times a day. Now it looks like I have to either change browsers or stop using it. Bummer.

  • Thibault Maekelbergh

Why is the shortcut set to the @ character. Each time I try to enter my email and enter @ the clipper pops open.. can’t I just change the shortcut.

Also having the issue with the focus drawing from the URL to somewhere else.

I can’t even get this to download. When I click on “Install”, nothing happens. I’ve tried re-starting Safari, but still nothing. How do I get this to work please? Evernote without a clipper is almost worthless to me.

I get this error message when clicking link in article above. Response denied by WatchGuard HTTP proxy.

that’s a great improvement! what I enjoyed the most is that now I can have the feel of Clearly on Safari. I hope Clearly (standalone version) comes out soon :)

  • Rik Ellerby

Hello, I love evernote on my mac unfortunately I’m out of the office 80% of the time researching on my iphone 50% of that time. I really would like to clip web pages on my iphone. I have found aime java script which would work except the save page function buttons are off the screen. Are you looking at fixing this soon? Evernote web clipper is only useful to me fully if I can clip from my iphone and view on my other devices. Please help???

  • Rik Ellerby

I’m not seeing any responses from the evernote team???? Is there there any point to leaving comments looking for feedback or updates if no one is listening???????? Highly frustrating indeed.

It doesn’t work in Safari. At least not after 5 minutes of whirring. There is a number in a red circle on the evernote symbol in the menu bar.But no notes appear in evernote.

Is there progress on the Evernote clipper for Safari 7.0? On some pages clicking the evernote clipper does nothing at all. Here is an example page: http://www.inc.com/barry-schuler/entrepreneurs-most-common-mistakes.html (There is some irony here given the topic of the page.)

This extension works only when it wants to. There may be some rhyme or reason but I have yet to figure it out. Remind me again why I pay for Evernote Premium?

Excellent article, highlighted some features I had not explored. This great extension brought me back to Safari.

  • John David Sykes

It randomly doesn’t clip on Safari. This is a documented problem, folks, how about a fix or at least acknowledge the bug. BTW, I’m a premium user and use the product very often. But, this bug is really bugging me.

  • A Ramirez

It just work when it feels like… hours of clipping lost…
    is anybody fixing this?

  • Bob

Installed this extension for Safari (Mavericks) — it’s on the toolbar and the button clicks but there is absolutely no indication that it failed or is doing anything (which it doesn’t).

    • Lezley

YES!! Okay, good. I’m not crazy – the button just isn’t working anymore.

      SO. SAD.

I LURV Evernote and this upgrade was the BEST.
Whhhhhhhhy have you forsaken us EVERNOTE… whyyyyyyy???!!?

The exact same thing happens to me that happens to @Bob >> “click”…nothing.
      ?
      SAD.

  • David S. Lott

Great idea but it does not work for me on Safari. Ridiculous.

  • David S. Lott

Hey, mine worked for a while then it stopped working again. Can you guys do anything right? This is a basic function, not some arcane frill.

  • Julian

The evernote web clipper only works on the evernote.com website…on other websites the button does not react at all. Please fix this issue. Many thanks

  • Dave Wild

Same here, the button does noting, no clipping or indication of failure.
