Today, we’ll show you how a designer uses the Evernote Smart Notebook by Moleskine for sketching and brainstorming designs.

Michelle Regenbogen is the owner of Macchiatto, a boutique branding and packaging design firm in San Francisco. You can watch a short interview we did with her, in which she discusses how she tags successful concepts with Smart Stickers, then saves the sketches in Evernote to refine and share with her colleagues.

Capturing ideas on paper, saving them digitally

As a visual designer, Michelle relies on sketching to capture what inspires her and iterate through projects. She keeps her Evernote Smart Notebook handy wherever she goes so she can capture ideas as they come.

Below are a few concepts she worked on for Macchiatto’s Spring promotion, which she can easily share with clients right from Evernote on her desktop or phone.

From flower sketches to sample card designs, Michelle can quickly narrow down her favorites by attaching Smart Stickers directly to the page, ensuring that those designs will automatically be saved to Evernote. Michelle has set the stickers to create specific tags in Evernote, such as Share, Final, and Future ideas. She can later search through her Evernote account and find exactly what she’s looking for.

Saving Hand-Drawn Designs to Evernote with the Page Camera

To save sketches into Evernote, Michelle snaps a photo with Page Camera. This mode is designed to enhance the quality of the image, and recognize any Smart Stickers. Once snapped, the images show up in Evernote with tags included.

    • Email is hard to search, and a lot of times, isn’t a great place to get actual work done. That’s where Evernote comes in.     Saving emails to Evernote

    Powerbot makes your emails more useful to you once they’re in your Evernote account. After you install Powerbot, a “Send to Evernote” button will appear next to Gmail’s Reply option. Click on the button to bring up the Powerbot interface, where you can choose your destination notebook, tags, and comments. If the email is part of a threaded conversation, you can save the entire thread to your Evernote account. Any attachments will be included if you choose.

    Attaching notes to email

    When you’re in your Gmail account writing an email, you’ll see buttons right inside the email window that allow you to add notes and notebooks from your Evernote account. Here are few ways to incorporate Powerbot into your workflow:

    If you…

    • are emailing about a meeting, you can insert a link to your Evernote note with details about what you need to discuss.
    • need to share a whole notebook, such as your full project specs and designs, you can insert a link to that notebook right in your email text.
    • want to save all sent emails in Evernote to stay organized? Open the Powerbot interface to choose the destination notebook, and add tags and comments.

    How it works

    UberConference provides a beautifully designed, intuitive web experience. You can pull in contacts from social networks, such as LinkedIn, or enter participant information manually. A great feature of UberConference is that participants can join either via their computer or their smartphone, and if using their smartphone, they only need to click on a link to the call number to join. No more tedious PIN numbers.

    Conf Call
    During the call, each person’s profile will appear, showing who is on, and when someone is speaking. If you pulled in social network profiles, you can access participants’ information during the call by clicking on their image so you have more context. To pull in notes from Evernote, simply tap on the share icon at the bottom next to the timer, and a menu showing both regular Evernote notebooks and Evernote Business notebooks will appear. You can search by note titles as well. Choose the notes you need, and they will be listed at the bottom of your screen. Everyone in the call can access these shared notes when they please, so one person could be looking at the agenda, while another is reviewing project specs.

    The summary sent to your Evernote account when your call is completed includes who participated, duration, what files were shared, a recording of the conversation, and an area to add further notes.

    How it works

    The concept is simple: use Zapier to connect other online services to your Evernote account, then specify what actions in those services you want to trigger actions in your Evernote account. You can also have Zapier use actions in Evernote to trigger actions in other services. For example, you can set Zapier to automatically create a Google Calendar event based on certain text found in a new note, and even have it automatically invite members of your team. This is just one of a huge number of possibilities that you can explore on Zapier’s website.

    Zapier has a step-by-step interface that makes set-up easy. Simply choose the icon of the service you want for the first trigger, then a second icon for the action. Zapier provides action choices in pull-down menus, walks you through setting up filters and other specifications, and lets you test everything before making it live.

    Once live, Zapier will check for triggers every 5 or 15 minutes, depending on your service level. You can also monitor all the activities that have been triggered using your dashboard.
