Valentines Day provides the perfect opportunity to show a loved one how much you care. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, pull it all together and make it look effortless with some help from Evernote.

Here are 3 tips to make it a day that special person in your life won’t soon forget.

Pick a Spectacular Restaurant

Before you make the reservations, do some research and collect it all in Evernote.

Ask for recommendations from friends, consult review sites, and check out menus, then save your favorites to your Evernote account with the Evernote Web Clipper. You can also use Evernote Food to discover new restaurants. The built in location-based restaurant and cuisine search makes it easy to select a restaurant close to you or find one that serves they type of food you’re looking for. Once you make those reservations, email your confirmation into your Evernote account, so that it’s accessible on your mobile device in case you need to pull it up once you arrive at the restaurant.

Plan a Getaway

If your plans involve a romantic weekend trip or a getaway to a special location, use Evernote to keep all the details straight. Research hotels ahead of time and clip them with Evernote so that when it comes time to book you’ll know exactly where to choose. Save Web Clips of maps, guides or any other important information you might need, then annotate them right in Skitch to easily remember detailed information you’ll need once you arrive at your destination.

Pro tip: Make a to-do list of things to pack. You can check things off as you go to be sure all the details are accounted for and a forgotten corkscrew or umbrella doesn’t derail your day.

Find the Perfect Gift

Hopefully you’ve been paying attention and taking note of the hints your significant other has been dropping throughout the year and saving them in Evernote. If not, it’s still not too late to look online for gift ideas from their favorite stores or websites. Another great trick is to keep your eye out for gift guides from your favorite retailers and blogs; these can be useful when you need some inspiration or guidance.

Pro tip: If you’re out shopping with your significant other and come across something, snap a photo in Evernote so you can go back and get it later. Add it to a specific “gift” notebook or use a tag so you can search for it later. You can even use Evernote to search for text in the image, so finding it is never hard.

Cook a Special Meal

Show them how much you care by creating a special meal at home. Even if you’re not an expert chef, you can use Evernote Food to make it look like you are. Browse through recipes right inside Evernote Food or clip them from websites, then make a shopping list of ingredients in Evernote and check them off on your phone. When it comes time to actually cook the meal, pull up the recipe on your phone or tablet and follow the directions.

We’re big fans of IdeaPaint, a special kind of paint that can turn anything into a dry-erase writing surface (you can read more about it here). When you combine IdeaPaint’s ability turn any wall or surface into a canvas and Evernote’s ability to capture, archive and make that surface searchable, the possibilities for turning any room into an interactive environment are endless. These two products come together in a particularly exciting way in a classroom environment, which can become a more creative and engaging place to learn.

When geography teacher Mike Curta reached out to us about his plans to transform his Eisenhower High School classroom using IdeaPaint and Evernote, we knew we wanted to learn more. Throughout the school year, Mike kept us updated with his progress by sending photos and email updates about the learning environment he created and the positive results he was observing. By the end of the year, we knew we had to see it for ourselves, so we headed to Blue Island, Illinois to chat with Mike in person and get a better sense of how students were thriving in this new type of classroom.

Evernote and IdeaPaint: Classroom Spotlight, Eisenhower High School from Evernote on Vimeo.

A Geography Lesson for interactive learners

From the moment we walked into the classroom, we could tell that Mike was doing things differently. Instead of sitting at desks, students in Mike’s class occupy tables which are arranged to form a complete circle, aimed at encouraging collaboration. Everything about his classroom fosters interaction; entire walls are covered in IdeaPaint, and so are the tops of the tables the students sit at, effectively turning every possible flat surface into a potential canvas. The day we stopped by, the students were learning about population density in Japan.

“If we have any ideas, anything about the topic, we just put it on the table” – Eisenhower High School Student

Mike encouraged his students to get out of their seats and share their work on the large IdeaPaint walls. As we quietly observed, students with erasable pens in hand sketched maps, wrote down ideas and answered questions. At certain points, he instructed students to participate in group activities, such as filling in the terrain of a map or jotting down characteristics of different living situations. One by one, students would make their way to the board to contribute their thoughts, passing pens among classmates and even working in teams.

Evernote + IdeaPaint = Amazing

Writing on dry-erase walls might seem like a great idea, but how do these ideas get saved? Enter the streamlined Evernote integration. Mike’s students make use of a variety of technology tools including a class set of netbooks and their own devices. Students are encouraged to bring in their smartphones and iPods (preloaded with Evernote) to class.

By using Evernote on a mobile device or laptop, they can snap photos of their writing and drawings and sync all of this content to their Evernote accounts. Once in Evernote, this information can be accessed at home, in the library, or wherever a student might need to access it later. If IdeaPaint serves as the physical canvas for lessons, Evernote is the digital one — giving each student a personal place to keep all their notes, files, lessons and more. The use of Evernote is so seamlessly integrated into Eisenhower High students’ learning process, it’s hard to imagine Mike’s classroom functioning without it.

“IdeaPaint and Evernote has made me a better teacher and it’s made our students lifelong learners who are going to continue to be more and more creative as they grow” – Mike Curta, Eisenhower High School

As more teachers and students adopt new technologies, including Evernote, they’re looking for useful resources to help them along the way. We’re excited to introduce them to Evernote for Schools, our new microsite devoted to helping those in the education community use Evernote more effectively.

Evernote Encourages a Lifetime of Learning

Evernote at the Florida Educational Conference

We recently had the pleasure of connecting with educators face-to-face at the Florida Educational Conference (FETC) where Carlos Fernandez, an Instructional Technology Coordinator for Leon County Schools in Florida, shared his top tips for using Evernote at school. Carlos reached out to us prior to the conference to let us know he was already presenting a workshop on Evernote. After talking with him we were so impressed with all the ideas he had, we asked him to lead our Learning Lab. During the Learning Lab Carlos was able to connect with fellow teachers and administrators, present some of his favorite Evernote use cases and help others get started and incorporating Evernote into their schools.

Check out the slides from Carlos’s (standing room only) presentation: Evernote in Education

The Evernote Developer Competition is now well underway, with hundreds of developers hard at work creating the next generation of apps that work with Evernote. Many of those developers already have great ideas for what to build, but others are still looking for inspiration. We’d like to pass along some ideas that we’ve had and let our users add their suggestions as well.

Ideas for apps that create notes

Our 10 Million Users, 10 Million Uses giveaway encourages our users to share their Evernote stories. What better way to share your favorite use of Evernote than by developing an app focused on a specific area that you’re passionate about? We envision an entire category of integrations focused on helping users capture structured information and store it in Evernote. They might also integrate with other services such as maps, calendars, Yelp or Foursquare to provide the user with additional information.

Here are some ideas for apps that help a user capture valuable and interesting information in Evernote:

Meal history

Takeout menus

Beer and wine impressions

Gifts

Dream journal

Trip planning

Hikes and outdoor activities

Fishing log

Photo shoots

Workouts & gym schedules

Class schedules & syllabi

Car maintenance & repairs

Garden plantings

Product serial numbers

Rebates and deals

Personal movie reviews

Ideas for apps that use notes

Last week we launched Evernote Peek , which is a great example the sort of app we hope to see in the competition. Peek helps a user get more out of the notes that they already have in Evernote. A common theme for most successful integrations is that they convey a simple message. For Peek, that message is Evernote helps you study. Here are some other ideas:

Remember last year – receive daily emails containing an Evernote memory from last year

Create a scrapbook or moodboard – extract notes from a specific notebook and assemble a well-designed scrapbook

Find restaurants – show restaurants you’ve saved in Evernote that are near your current location

Citations and bibliography – use metadata from clipped notes create an instant bibliography for research projects

Presentation maker – turn your Evernote notes into PowerPoint or Keynote presentations

Find your own way

These are just a few ideas to help get you get your creative juices flowing. To allow developers and users to share and discuss integration ideas, we’ve added a new forum where you can join the discussion and get inspiration. If you’re not planning on building an integration, but have an amazing idea for something you would like to see, leave it as a comment below. Who knows, maybe someone will bring it to life.

Evernote in the classroom has always made perfect sense to us. With its flexible organization features, sharing capabilities, cross- platform synchronization and, of course, powerful search, Evernote is a well-suited tool for educators and students alike.

We recently had the opportunity to attend the NAIS Conference (National Association of Independent Schools) with with our new friends from IdeaPaint.

Over the course of the event we had dozens of teachers and administrators come up to our booth and share the ways they were putting Evernote to use at their schools. We heard from teachers who were using Evernote with their students, as well as administrators who were implementing large-scale deployments–much like The Montclair Kimberley Academy.

Alex Ragone, Director of Technology at Collegiate School in New York City

Alex Ragone dropped by and shared all the ways he and his students at the Collegiate School are using Evernote to remember everything:

“I love the ability to move between my laptop, iPad and Android phone. I put class rosters in Evernote so I can quickly pull up my attendance at the beginning of each class and use it to take notes in meetings all the time. I’ve also used Noteshelf to ink notes and sync them with Evernote, making them searchable. All of these great uses of your product simplify the process of storing information.”

Alex has also implemented Evernote on iPads at his school as part of a school-wide experiment. He’s written about his experiences and has also participated in an education-focused podcast called Ed TechTalk Webcast, hosted by Bill Stites.

Whether you’re writing a paper or studying for a test, odds are you spend more time gathering the pieces than actually working. Getting all of your notes together, hunting for quotes, and tracking down bibliographical information takes at least as long, if not longer, as writing the paper itself.

In a group situation, sharing research and collaborating on the production of one document is even more difficult without the proper tools.

Enter Evernote. For students, it’s an invaluable way to organize research and streamline the collaboration process. Here are some examples of how Evernote simplifies the student research process.

Organizing in Evernote

The first step in any research project is, well, the research. This means gathering all of the preliminary information you’ll need to start the writing process. If you’re gathering information using word processing documents, or on paper, things quickly get messy. With Evernote, all quotes, statistics and reference material pages are in one place, easily accessible and searchable by keywords, notebooks and tags. This is especially helpful when information could be coming from all sorts of places – the Web, handwritten notes, typed notes, and even photographs.

Here’s an example of a way to organize your research:

Make a notebook for every project (for example: “Civil War Thesis”). Then add tags like “sources,” “quotes,” “data” and “important events,” so you can quickly sort through your research at any time. The simplicity of search in a centralized system is one of the biggest benefits of Evernote for research purposes.

Web Clipping

Scrolling through Web pages over and over to find the one paragraph or quote you want to reference is always excruciatingly time-consuming. With Evernote, just clip the relevant part of a Web page with the Web Clipper, which is available for any browser you might be using. To clip, select the part of the page you need, and Evernote creates a new note with the title and URL of the page, along with the selected content.

Later, you can easily search through Evernote for this information, because you’ve already weeded out the part you’ll actually need. Clip long articles and PDFs, quotes and even Wikipedia pages and have them all be in one place. You can search by specific keywords and if needed, easily get back to the original sources by clicking on the embedded source file link.

Collaboration in Evernote

Have you ever sent the same document back and forth, never knowing which version is actually the right one? With Evernote, you can share notebooks with other Evernote users, and if a file or note changes or gets updated, it automatically updates for everyone who has access to the notebook. If you’re a Premium user, you also get note history, giving you a running history of every note in your account that you can easily revert to.

Whether you’re sharing a PowerPoint or a Word document, or a few lines of text, having a shared notebook keeps everyone updated with other people’s progress, and ensures that no one spends time working off of old files.

Search in Evernote

Evernote’s search functionality might be among the most useful feature for students. If you’re looking for a quote, or need a particular statistic, being able to search by intuitive keywords saves a staggering amount of time.

If you’re a Google Chrome user, Evernote’s Web Extension makes search even more powerful: when you search Google, you can also search Evernote at the same time (it’s called Simultaneous Search). When doing a Google for something you might be pleasantly surprised to find out you already have a note about it in Evernote. With this search enabled you can be sure you’ve covered all your bases.

Access Information Anywhere, No Thumb Drive Necessary

As a student, you’re all over the place: in class on your mobile device, at the gym, in your dorm room, at the library, etc. With Evernote, files, notes and documents are available to you everywhere – on your phone, your desktop, and anywhere you have an internet connection. That means that if you’re working in a computer lab, all your research is there. If you lost your thumb drive before your presentation, you can pull up your PowerPoint from a friend’s laptop.

Having everywhere access to your Evernote account also means you can make great use of the in-between time we all tend to have. Whether you’re waiting for the bus, or for class to start, you can make quick edits to anything you’re working on.

Evernote puts everything in one place, and makes it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for, no matter where you are. If you’re doing research, alone or in a group, Evernote saves time and helps keep you organized.

Have any additional tips for how to make Evernote a research powerhouse? Share it in the comments.

The book talks about Tim’s quest to hack the human body and become superhuman. We were thrilled to hear all the interesting ways Tim used Evernote in the creation of his new book.

Tell us about your new book, The 4-Hour Body.

I’ve been working on the 4-Hour Body for three years, which is nearly three times as long as it took to create the 4-Hour Workweek. This book is a hacker’s guide to the human body. I spent that time testing all of the fads, all of the diets, and all of the exercise protocols with the help of the world’s best scientists, doctors, athletes, and coaches. Throughout the process, I made myself the guinea pig for various extreme approaches in order to really find the critical few things that work, not only for me but for more than 200 test subjects.

What role did Evernote play in researching and writing the 4-Hour Body?

I started using Evernote for the revised and expanded edition of the 4-Hour Workweek, which came out mid-December of last year. It was an opportunity for me to test different tools and technologies that knew I would use for the 4-Hour Body. In a way, Evernote was being auditioned during the writing of the the last 4-Hour Workweek edition. I immediately started using it for the 4-Hour Body.

If I look at my notebook and I go back to my oldest notes in my largest notebook, they are actually photographs of a menu that I took when I was with Phil [Evernote CEO, Phil Libin] when he gave me one of my first demos of Evernote. Right after that there are things related to the 4-Hour Body. So, from the very outset, the basis and central heartbeat of all of my research for this book was Evernote. That’s not an exaggeration at all.

Without Evernote, I would have been completely lost. I would have had to create hundreds of different folders with substructures. I would have had to back everything up repeatedly to different locations. It would have been a complete nightmare. So, the research, the note taking and the organization was all done with Evernote. Then, I moved to a program called Scrivener, which is traditionally used for screenplays, but I used it to take information from Evernote and put it into a research section to draft the book. Evernote was the starting point, the central point for everything.

How did you use Evernote for the project and how did that use evolve?

I used it primarily for two or three things at the outset and throughout. The first was scanning everything into Evernote and eliminating paper whenever possible. The second was web clipping and online research. Evernote made it so that I could read things offline that I didn’t want to leave open in twenty tabs online.

What struck me as a benefit that I didn’t anticipate was that Evernote really became the most accurate log and diary of all of my mishaps, adventures, successes, and wins. It is definitely the most densely detailed account of everything that I’ve been through while writing this book. That was a side benefit that has been a real advantage for me.

Also, because I wanted to keep the content top secret, I didn’t really share any of what I was doing in a public way. I didn’t take the time to write a journal or anything like that, so Evernote ended up being my default diary. To this day, I still go back through my Evernote, because it’s a fun way to look back at the journey I chronicled there.

Besides using Evernote, you also included Evernote in your book in a surprising way. Can you tell us about that?

Evernote is in the book for two reasons. First, I talk a lot about tracking. For people who use iPhones or simply phones with decent cameras, Evernote is a perfect tool for doing much of what I recommend in the book, such as keeping a food log or simply taking photographs of meals. Doing this affects behavior very dramatically.

The second reason Evernote is in the book, is Phil. In one of our very first meetings, Phil mentioned to me that he had lost a tremendous amount of weight without trying–by using an Excel spreadsheet. He then quickly moved on to demoing Evernote and I was like “We’ll get to Evernote, but what’s going on with this story? I want to hear that first”.

Phil had tried diets and exercise but it was inconvenient, it took time and he’d always regained the weight. He decided to see if there was a lazier way. He simply weighed himself every morning and created a spreadsheet with a graph in Excel. He had a slope going from where his current weight was, to his ideal weight. The graph also had a maximum allowable weight line and a minimum allowable weight. He would weigh himself and see where he was on that graph.

Phil made the conscious decision not to try and change his behavior, which is perhaps a little more stubborn than necessary for most people, but he didn’t consciously try to improve his diet, or go out and get more exercise. Those thousands of tiny subconscious decisions were affected by his awareness, and he ended up losing between 30 and 50 pounds.

That is a really great example of how using the proper psychological and scientific background is more effective than sending someone to a trainer. You can make tiny tiny changes that affect awareness. You feel like you’re not making any effort whatsoever and yet big changes are the result–that is quite a large facet of the 4-Hour Body.

The 4-Hour Body is available now »
