Mother’s Day is about celebrating all the little things that make moms so special. Whether she cheers from the sidelines at all the kids’ soccer games, makes storytime a priority every day, or cooks a mean lasagna, there are a million big and small ways Mom lets the family know how much she loves them.

This Friday, we’d like to show you how you can use Skitch to create a quick note to send the mother, grandmother, wife, or girlfriend in your life to let her know you’re thinking of her — and not just on Mother’s Day. After all, she should be celebrated every day!

The hardest part of creating the card is picking a photo. Once you’ve taken one with Skitch or you’ve opened another photo you like in Skitch, just use the pen tool or text to write your message for Mom. Skitch’s tools are so simple, you can easily get the kids involved in signing the card, too!

After you’ve added your personal touch to the image, sharing it is a cinch. Just tap the share button in the corner to share a link with her, post it to Facebook or Twitter, or send it in an email. In just a few short minutes, you can create an adorable card that communicates just how much Mom means to you.

If you’re looking for even more ideas to make this Mother’s Day special, check out our tips for planning the Perfect Mother’s Day brunch. How are you using Evernote and Skitch to plan Mother’s Day this year?

Have you visited the Paper Shop in Penultimate recently? If not, be sure to take a look at the awesome collection of Papers you can use to capture your sketches and handwritten notes, then instantly save them to your Evernote account. You’ll find just what you need to scribble notes at work, sketch out designs, or jot down that chord that’s running through your head. And if you’re a Premium user, you have access to any of the Papers in the Paper Shop. Go ahead and give them a try!

Create Your Own Papers

In addition to the Papers available in the Paper Shop, you can also create unique Penultimate papers from any image to fit your note-taking needs. Here’s how it’s done:

First, take a photo or scan an image of a blank document you’d like to use as the background of your paper. Then, save it to the Camera Roll on your iPad.

Inside any Penultimate Notebook, tap the Papers icon on the top right corner of your screen. Hit the (+) sign, then Continue to add a new Paper.

Select the image you’d like to create your Paper from, and name the Paper whatever you would like.

Click on your custom Paper to start writing or drawing, just as you normally would. It will now be the default Paper when you create new pages in your current notebook. If you switch Papers or Notebooks and then want to return to the last selection, you can find it in My Papers.

Bonus: To add this paper to Penultimate on your iPad, open the link to this shared note, then tap and hold the .ppr file and tap “Open in Penultimate.”

Any form, diagram, or template that you frequently reference is now synced to all your devices and searchable at a moment’s notice. Custom Papers are a just another way that Penultimate and the rest of Evernote’s apps make getting organized around your projects easy and fun, no matter what information you need to keep track of in your work or daily life.

What kinds of handwritten notes do you take with Penultimate? Share your story in the comments below!

Contributed Post by Carley Knobloch, Parenting Ambassador:

I don’t care if the groundhog sees his shadow or not— when March hits, I start cleaning. I’m purging belongings, I’m scrubbing the patio furniture and organizing my husband’s sock drawer; nothing is safe. Organizational overhauls can be a great learning experience for kids, especially when those kids are responsible for much of the mess in the house. For me, it’s just as much about getting them to pitch in as it is imparting some organizational wisdom. Here are some out-of-the-box ideas for cleaning up after, around and with the kids.

Archive the Kids’ art.

I accept that someday my children will leave the house, so why is it so hard to let go of their noodle necklaces and marker masterpieces? Artwork is accumulative, and I’ve learned over the years that saving everything means nothing feels special. Spring is a great time to scan or photograph your mini Monet’s works and store all the archives in Evernote. I like to record the artists’ commentary on the works as well, and I bet they’ll love listening to those old voice notes once they’re away at college (and I’ve converted their room into a home gym).

Bring in the robots!

I think I made it to twelve before I realized our Carpet Sweeper wasn’t actually a toy. I remember loving to help clean up around the house, and if helping involves using remotes and pushing buttons, you’re golden.* Your kids will fight over who gets to hit “go” on a Looj Gutter Cleaner robot (the leaves go flying everywhere!) and who gets to point the Roomba robot at the dog and hit “start.” The house gets tidied, and your kids learn that cleaning up is everyone’s responsibility.

*Warning: Does not apply to teenagers.

Store Toys with a System.

Maybe it’s something about the cold winter months, but I am convinced that stuffed animals (and toys and books) tend to multiply in winter. Spring means thinning out the herd, storing the old toys for the next sibling in line, or (my dirty secret) putting things in the garage to ensure that no one misses them, then giving them away to charity. (Buh bye Furby!). I snap a quick phone picture of everything I put in storage, and keep them all in Evernote, so if someone suddenly wonders where their purple bunny with the polka-dot tunic went, you’ll know exactly which storage bin it’s in.

Purge your paper

Here’s something no one ever told me: families leave a paper trail. Report cards, medical histories, soccer schedules, vet records, bills paid, checks returned… the list is endless. I promise you, 92% of these documents can safely disappear with two words: scan and shred. Because I despise unnecessary paper piles, my Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 has become my partner in paperless living. All those piles become searchable PDF documents, easy to find at a moment’s notice for the rest of eternity. I can take my crusade against paper waste a step further with the PaperKarma app. Hand your iPhone or Android to the kids and have them take pictures of all the junk mail you don’t want to receive anymore – then poof! PaperKarma unsubscribes you. It’s like hiring a bouncer for your mailbox.

Store cleaning tips in Evernote

Not to get all meta, but I do enjoy organizing articles about organizing, and cleaning up articles about cleaning up. If you’re like me, you’re constantly coming across articles, blogs and cereal boxes with interesting home remedies and non-traditional cleaning tips (did you know a slice of white bread can take stains out of a delicate wallpaper?). I scan or clip them all into Evernote so when I do find a stain on my wallpaper (“Kiiids! Who ate rocky road in the powder room!?”) I can find the fix in record time. Now I’m the one friends call when they find themselves in a Sharpie-on-Suede situation. Just call me Martha Knobloch.

One of my kids heads to middle school next year, and I’m guessing that might be the time we have “The Talk“ (the Evernote Talk, that is). I think he’ll benefit greatly from having his life organized and available from any device. Of which he has plenty. Which reminds me… I’ve got to get him to clean up his room…

With the change of season you may be thinking that now’s a good time to give your office a thorough spring cleaning. After all, it is a time of renewal, so why not refresh your workspace?

Contributed post by Joshua Zerkel, Productivity Ambassador

With the change of season, you may be thinking about giving your office a thorough spring cleaning. After all, it is a time of renewal, so why not refresh your workspace?

Although you can dig right into sorting your belongings, information, and other “stuff” around your desk and your office, it’s helpful to start with a strategy around how you’re going to store and organize whatever remains. Increasingly, the people I work with are looking to centralize and streamline as much as possible — and one of the ways they’re able to achieve that goal is by using Evernote to facilitate the process.

Here are some of my favorite ways to use Evernote as part of your office spring-cleaning strategy:

So long, sticky-note monitor frame

Is your desk littered with sticky notes and scraps of scribbled paper? While it can be helpful to be able to jot down a quick note, it’s difficult to keep track of all those bits of paper as they accumulate, and even harder to find the information you need from them quickly. On top of that, sticky notes aren’t the most aesthetically pleasing decor choice for your desk.

Evernote can clean up your sticky note mess quickly and effectively. On your phone, use Evernote to take snapshots of your handwritten notes — one Evernote note per sticky or random scrap of paper. Put them in a notebook called “Sticky Notes” or something along those lines (or you can create a “Sticky Notes” tag if you prefer tagging). Evernote will make your handwritten notes searchable, so you’ll be able to find the information you’re looking for in a snap. As an added bonus, you’ll never have to worry about losing one of those notes again — they’ll all be in your Evernote account.

Clean up the idea pile

Regardless of what your job is, you probably come across articles that spark ideas, blog posts that you could riff off of in your work, and webpages that inspire your own creativity. These pieces are helpful to have handy as you develop your thinking around a project — after all, few ideas are created out of whole cloth. But when they’re kept in printed stacks or piles on our around your desk or buried in bookmarks on your computer, they not only create clutter — they’re impossible to use effectively.

Since Evernote can capture many different types of notes — Web Clips (via the Web Clipper), photos, scanned articles that you’ve torn out of a magazine, etc., it’s an ideal spot to keep the things that can spark your work-related ideas. Create an “Ideas and Inspiration” notebook, and corral the websites, articles, and notes that you’ve been collecting. When it’s time to work on a new project, set aside a few minutes to flip through the ideas you’ve collected. Looking through your notebook may just cause inspiration to strike!

Say goodbye to the “someday” stuff

Joshua Zerkel, Evernote Productivity Ambassador

It’s easy to jettison printed documents, articles, and other information that you only need for a limited time. But what about the content you’re less sure about — that article that you think may come in handy in the future, or the website that you might want to revisit?

This is a good time to bring Evernote into the mix. Rather than creating a “miscellaneous” folder or pile on your desk or computer, create a “Someday” or “Articles” notebook in Evernote. Capture the web pages or scan the clips that you can foresee yourself needing access to, and store them in that new notebook.

Clear, concise communication is powerful. With a little clarity, we can eliminate those long, roundabout email exchanges that keep projects in perpetual limbo. That’s what Skitch is for, and today we’re bringing this vision to your PDF workflow to help you give the fastest, friendliest and most direct feedback ever. Not only that, but we’ve also added an innovative summary that ensures your recipients are able to act upon your feedback immediately. Let’s dive into the new PDF features, as well as some exciting new tools.

Get Skitch for Mac
Get Skitch for iPhone and iPad

PDF Annotation

Starting to use the new PDF features is as simple as you’d expect. Open a single or multi-page PDF in Skitch or drag it right onto the app. Then, annotate it with shapes, arrows and text. Point out items that need a change, use the Highlighter to draw attention to important sections and add text to give your recipient instructions on next steps. Navigate to any part of the PDF using the new drawer along the edge of the app. Once you’re done, share the document back. This is where the real magic begins.

The Skitch Summary

There’s a real sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that the people you’re working with fully understand your thoughts. When you share an annotated multi-page PDF, Skitch lets you add a new first page to that document. This page is made up of previews of each piece of feedback contained in the PDF. Click on one and you’re taken to the annotation. This summary makes it a snap for your recipient to scan over all of your feedback, understand it, and take action without needing to go beyond the first page.

As anyone that’s found themselves on the receiving end of feedback knows, it’s always incredibly helpful to get a sense of your reader’s thought and how many changes they’re looking for before diving in. That’s the second part of the Skitch Summary. When you email an annotated PDF to someone or create a public link, the viewer will first see a display of the quantity and type of annotations in the document.

Sharing the PDF

Sharing a Skitch Summary couldn’t be easier. You can include a summary when you choose to email your PDF with the share button. In addition, on Skitch for Mac you can attach a summary when exporting or by selecting PDF with Summary in the Drag Me bar, then dragging it straight onto your desktop or into other apps. It’s that easy to share rich, detailed feedback on PDF documents.

Evernote Premium

Anyone with an Evernote account gets complimentary access to a 30-day preview of PDF annotation and the Skitch Summary. It’s easy to create an Evernote account and get started using PDF annotation. Evernote Premium users get full access to these features. Upgrade to Evernote Premium »

Fast Feedback with new Stamps

Stamps are an all-new annotation tool in Skitch 2.5 that lets you communicate your ideas incredibly quickly with simple shapes that stand out. Place a stamp to quickly indicate that you like something, hate it, or need a deeper explanation. When it’s perfect, stamp it with a Skitch heart.

After you place each stamp, you can also add a little more detail to your feedback with a pointer and a label. To add a pointer to any stamp, just click or tap on the (+). The pointer will display, and you can now move the blue dot to position it anywhere around the Stamp. Adding labels to stamps is as simple as clicking the “a” symbol. Each stamp comes with a standard label, but if you’d like to change it, just start typing your own text (only a few words).

Plain text options

Skitch’s text annotations have always boldly stood out from the background. Now, in addition to our annotation text, Skitch has a Plain Text styling so you can keep it simple while filling out forms and other online documents.

To switch to Plain Text, compose your annotation as you normally would by clicking or tapping on the “a” icon in the sidebar and typing. Then, when you select the text box a second time, a toggle will appear that allows you to switch to Plain Text. You can also switch to Plain Text in the style menu at any time.

One thing to note is that we don’t include a Skitch Summary by default when you use Plain Text -this is because we expect that you will most often use the feature to fill out forms. If you would still like to include a summary, be sure to choose this option when you are sharing the PDF.

Handy Resources

The first time you open the app, you’ll notice new Tool Tips popping into your Skitch window, providing more information about new features in this version. The tips also contain links to our Product Guide in case you would like to learn more about these features, or any other feature in Skitch.

Contributed post by Erin Souder

I just love decorating for spring. Around this time of year, I always find myself craving those little updates around the house that make it feel light, fresh, and lively. Making your own space look special for springtime doesn’t have to be a production – adding even a few pops of color here and there can make a huge difference in the mood of your house.

Here are a few of my favorite time-saving tips for making your spring decorating quick, simple, and attractive with the help of Evernote!

Evernote for Capturing Ideas

All winter long, I file away pretty floral brights or light, drapey warm-weather fabrics into my Evernote “Home Decor” notebook. I do this by adding photos of items I see in other homes that I adore, or, when I’m looking around online, I clip images from the web straight into my account with the Evernote Web Clipper. If you want to learn more about the organization system I use once I clip and add all this content to Evernote, check out this post I wrote a little while back.

By going through this process of saving things I like when I see them, I don’t need to dedicate time to actively searching for ideas when I feel like doing a refresh – they’re all waiting for me in my Evernote account. When the first warm days start to approach, I browse through all of that inspiration to pick out the perfect mix of textures and colors that shout out spring!

Erin’s Spring Style Tips

Here are some of my go-to methods for bringing a little bit of the spring spirit indoors:

Vibrant, Breezy Brights. Trade those heavy afghans and fluffy sherpa pillows for light and silky throws and vivid, bright prints! Pick an item you love with a color that pops, and start adding complementary accessories and textures from there. I usually like to offset my colorful items with some earth tones to avoid that Easter-egg, bright-on-bright look. Hand towels, shower curtains, sheets, and bathroom rugs all get the switch for a crisp look throughout the house.

Lively Blooms. The last thing to signify that spring really is coming to life in your home is the addition of flowers – they give your home a fresh, inviting feel unlike any other accessory. I pick up tulips and other spring flowers from my local supermarket, then break down the bouquets into a few small and one large arrangement and place them in simple vases all over the house. This way, no matter what room you are in you can catch a whiff of the delicious scents of spring.

There, now isn’t that better? I hope your spring is full of beautiful brights and sweet smells!

Filing insurance claims is often a frustrating process, with a multitude of steps to keep track of and zero room for error. While we hope you never have to do so, Skitch and Evernote can help you set yourself right again as quickly as possible by creating simple, clear resources for insurance claims. We’ve shared some handy tips below:

Document any damage

One of the best ways to cover all your bases is with photographic evidence. Snap a photo in Skitch, then mark it up to point out exactly what you’d like the insurance company to notice about the scene.

Keep track of important information

Getting all the information in order surrounding an insurance claim is critical to getting a fair appraisal. Make sure you never lose any important documents by keeping them all in Evernote. Even if you’ve handwritten notes about the incident in a hurry, you can snap a photo and sync it to Evernote so you’ll always have it available.

Map it out

Skitch can help you make a simple, clear map to show where the incident occurred and describe what happened. Just capture the map with Skitch on your mobile device, mark it up, then sync it with Evernote.

Skitch and Evernote are a great team for making sense out of complicated processes. How are you using Skitch and Evernote to capture and keep everything organized? Share your story in the comments below!

As temperatures warm up, it’s the perfect time to take on the rewarding task of planting a spring garden. Whether you’ve got an entire backyard you’d like to spruce up or you just want to start growing some of your favorite herbs in a window box, putting together a strategy in Skitch before getting your hands dirty will save you tons of time and money. Take a look at our top tips for using Skitch to plant the perfect spring garden below!

Organize Your Ideas and Inspiration

Snap pictures of flowers or the layout of other gardens that you want to try to replicate, then use arrows, shapes and text to show what you like in the photos. Because your Skitch images now go through the Evernote service you can search for text in these photos, making it easier to remember what ideas inspired you when you get ready to start the real work.

Plan Your Space

Skitch has the tools you need to create a simple plan for your garden so you can avoid buying plants that you don’t have room for. Take a photo of the spot you’ll be working with, then use shapes, text, and marker tool to help you build your plan with information including measurements or notes on sunlight. Make the most of a sunny space on your windowsill, or put together some garden boxes in the backyard — whatever space you want to devote to your spring garden project, Skitch can help you use it efficiently.

Identify Problems and Find Solutions

Don’t let a mystery pest get you down. Take a photo and point out the problem in Skitch so that when you head to a nursery or garden center you can be sure to get the help you need. Skitch makes it easy to point out the issue you’re concerned about with arrows and shapes on your mobile device, so you’ll have access to it wherever you go to get gardening advice.

Work with a Team

Some gardening projects are just too big for one person to handle on their own. When you need to bring in reinforcements to get the job done, start it off on the right foot with Skitch. Mark up the areas you’d like help with in Skitch and share it with your team. Whether you’ve got friends or family helping you out or you’ve hired professionals, providing detailed images of what you want will save everyone time and make sure your planting turns out perfectly.

The pantry contains a lot of the staples you need to make your favorite meals each week – food in mason jars or boxes stashed away, condiments, sauces, grains and pastas, all ready to use at a moment’s notice. But how often do you dedicate time and thought to what is actually kept there? Whether it’s one shelf or an entire dedicated basement room, our pantry is the wingman of our kitchen. This spring, as we get started with cleaning and organizing the rest of our house, it’s also a great time to give the pantry some much-deserved love and attention.

Here’s my top tips to get your pantry cleaned out and back in working order with Evernote!

Clear it all out.

As you’re going through your pantry, be a ruthless sorter. Your bandwidth will vary on this, but the goal is to get a hand and eye on every item in the pantry. Keep a box for trash, a “donate” box, and a box for items you want to keep nearby. Chances are, if you’ve not used that Hoisin sauce over the last 6-12 months you may never use it, so donate it to someone who will. Be realistic with yourself about what you really use. The pantry can do great things for your meal planning and prep, but only if it’s filled with food you actually use and love.

Put things in order.

Be sure to go donate that box (or boxes) you just cleared out. Then, you’re ready to get started on putting things back in order.

Organizing is really a matter of two principles:

1. Only have things you use, and keep like things together.

2. Being organized simply means you are able to find things you need in 5 minutes or less.

If you stick to these two rules, getting the items you have in order isn’t too complicated. If it helps, think of your grocery store aisles and shelves, and how they are put together. Group your canned meats & seafood, pastas, legumes, grains, jams, pickles, canned fruit – you get the idea. How big your groups are will dictate how much space they need.

Once you’ve grouped your items, label to your heart’s content. Make your pantry an attractive space with baskets, matching trays, shelves or labels. A great place to find labels is in the scrapbooking section of your local craft store, or you might even have things laying around your home that you can use. Be creative! Then, stand back and admire your hard work.

Keep Track of Ingredients and Meals in Evernote

Now that you’ve got your pantry in good working order, let’s keep it that way. One way to make sure your inventory is up to date is to keep lists of ingredients and lists of meals you make on a regular basis. Here’s where Evernote comes into the process. I make a few important notes that help me track the ways I’m using items from my pantry (learn how to create a checklist in Evernote):

1. In your Evernote account, make a note called “Dinner List”, including meals you make on a regular basis. Take a few minutes and do a brain dump of everything you can think of – remember, you can always add (or subtract) things later.

2. Make a note of your pantry’s inventory. To get super organized, add the expiration dates so that you can easily see what needs to be used up and things you need to buy or replace.

3. Make a simple template note that includes the following categories: Meals, Sides, Use, and Make. Use this template each week to plan out what you’ll prepare. When you notice pantry items that are about to be past their prime, put them on the week’s “use” list. Refer to your “Dinner List” note you made above when you are uninspired or stumped on what to make. You can also share your “Dinner List” note with the family and ask for any requests.

Bonus Tip: This whole exercise also works on the freezer. I like to use my freezer as a backup pantry for perishable foods. Go through the same steps with your freezer as well, and you’ll be a pantry rockstar!

Kick-Off Quick Tip: Emailing into Evernote

In the spirit of simplification, we thought we’d kick things off with a Quick Tip to help you do a little spring cleaning of one of the most difficult places to keep organized: your email inbox. It’s a great time to tackle your digital clutter, and a good place to start is by setting aside some time to start sorting, tagging, unsubscribing and deleting. As you’re working your way through this process, you can easily forward things you want to keep or archive straight into your Evernote account. If your are sending emails to a recently created notebook or tagging with a recently created tag, remember to sync your account first. Here’s how it’s done:

Bonus Tip: Once you’ve got your Evernote email address, you can add it to your contacts to save yourself time when forwarding emails into Evernote in the future!

1. Get your Evernote email address. Every Evernote account comes with a unique email address. You can look yours up in Evernote for any platform:Evernote for Mac & Evernote for Mac: Go to the Account Info area
Evernote Web: Go to Settings
Evernote for Android: Go to Settings, then tap ‘Account Info’
Evernote for iPhone and iPad: Go to Account Info, then tap ‘Evernote email address’
2. Specify the notebook and tags you want associated with the note in the subject line. To specify the destination notebook, append the subject line with the symbol “@” followed by the name of an existing notebook. To add a tag, include “#” followed by an existing tag. For example, @recipes #dinner would automatically create a note tagged with ‘dinner’ in the notebook ‘recipes.’

3. Sync your Evernote account. Once sent, the email will appear as a new note in your Evernote account the next time you sync.

Just like that, your email will appear as a note in the notebook you sent it to. Forwarding emails into Evernote is a fast and easy way to start tackling your digital mess this Spring. For more information, you can also check out this older post about forwarding into Evernote.

Learn from the Evernote Ambassadors

Thanks to Education Ambassador, Nick Provenzano for passing along this tip:

“The email feature of Evernote is a great way to clean up that cluttered inbox. As a teacher, I can have email from students, parents, teachers, administrators and everything in between. Instead of leaving them sitting in the inbox, I can forward them to Evernote and place them in the correct notebook and tag them all in the subject line.”
