New Premium Feature: Text-to-Speech

Oftentimes, great web articles and blog posts come to you when you don’t have time to actually sit down and read them. You may be working on something else or walking around your kitchen cooking. Now, you can keep doing what you’re doing and absorb the article at the same time. Open the link, click Clearly, then click the new Text-to-Speech icon. Moments later, Clearly will start reading the article aloud to you. It’s like instantly turning articles into podcasts. Become an Evernote Premium subscriber to try it out.

Additionally, we’ve built live text highlighting into Clearly, which shows you the words as they’re read. Click on the handy controls in the sidebar if you want to pause, skip ahead or jump to the previous sentence.

This new feature supports over a dozen different languages. When you combine that with the text highlighting, you get a great language learning tool. Visit a site in another language, then have Clearly read it to you as you follow along with the highlighting.

Here are a few tips to be a better Olympic fan with Evernote:

1. Know the schedule. Don’t miss your favorite event by clipping the Olympic schedule to your Evernote account, where you can access it using any computer or mobile device.
2. Keep track of the medal count. Following your country’s standings? Create a New Note and update it with the latest medal count.
3. Organize a viewing party. Get all of your friends and family together to catch a big event. Use Evernote to create a guest list, clip recipe ideas, as well as inspiration for decorations. Check out our guide to planning an event with Evernote.
4. Follow your favorite athletes and remember the big moments. It’s likely that records will be broken and once-in-a-lifetime stories will unfold. Capture the memories of these games by using the Evernote Web Clipper and Evernote Clearly to clip memorable articles to your Evernote account so you can relive them in the future. 5. Get involved. In London for the games? Use Evernote to plan your daily itinerary. Don’t forget about using Evernote Hello to remember people you meet and the experiences you share together, and Evernote Food to capture the tasty food you eat along the way.
6. Capture the sounds. Got tickets to a game? Pull out your phone and use Evernote’s audio feature to record some of the sounds of the games.
7. Share your memories with friends around the world. Make a public London 2012 notebook. Fill it with your thoughts and share it with friends in other countries.

We’ve talked to a lot of students who use Evernote for everything from taking notes to working on group projects and today we’re excited to announce our new Student Ambassador, Megan Cotter. Megan is a college student who’s here to share her tips for ways to use Evernote in a college or university setting. Megan is kicking things off by sharing a few of her top tips for using Evernote in college, just in time for finals.

10 Tips for Using Evernote to De-Stress College

College students have to keep track of a lot of things: every set of class notes, every internship/job application, every piece of information for every extracurricular activity, and on and on. All that stuff just leaves us stressed, trying to sort through each piece of paper to find the one thing that we need at that moment. As a lot of you may already know, Evernote is a great tool for organizing all of it and taking a little bit of the stress out of college.

2. Organize Your Research
No student can escape the endless amount of research. Evernote Clearly removes all of the distractions and lets you have exactly what you need from a website. Rather than printing out multiple pages, just clip however many lines you need. Cuts down on the paper, and makes that research project a whole lot easier.

3. Keep Up With Your Professors
Every school has that professor who puts an impossible amount of information on the board or on slides. Rather than trying to get it all down, just snap a picture. After class, use Skitch to add any extra information that you need and then put it right in with the rest of your notes.

4. Keep Everything Together, Not Just the Digital Stuff
Maybe you would rather take notes by hand. Or you have a professor with a “no technology policy.” That doesn’t mean that you can’t keep everything organized. Scan your handwritten notes and handouts into Evernote and they will be completely searchable. This way, when finals come around, you’ll be one step ahead.

5. Work Together Even If You’re Apart
One of the most stressful parts of group projects is finding a time everyone can get together. Rather than rearranging everyone’s schedules, use a Shared Notebook to keep everything up to date. You can also use a shared notebook with your study group. Make a study guide that the group can access and add to.

6. Remember the Best (Or Cheapest) Campus Pizza Place
Trying to remember the great pizza place you ate at last weekend with the huge student discount? Put it in Evernote Food. Then next time you’re having a craving, you won’t have to waste time calling for prices.

7. Know Your Stuff
Sometimes, accidents happen and you’ll end up needing medical attention. Instead of sitting in the doctor’s office, trying to remember what medication it was that made you break out in hives and when you last had a tetanus shot, keep a medical notebook with every random detail so you’ll never be caught unaware.

8. Take Control of Your Time
Does checking your favorite blogs for a new post become a major source of procrastination? Have them delivered right to your Evernote account with ifttt. Then you won’t have to waste time checking for a new one. There are a lot of other ways you can use ifttt for college, too.

9. What Do I Have at Home?
Don’t end up buying duplicates of things. Keep an inventory of everything you have. Snap a picture of each item and tag it with where it is: home or school. Check your inventory before you buy, that way you’ll have extra money for the pizza place from #6.

10. Let Everyone Know What You Want
Everyone has a wish list. Whether its a movie that just came out, a new computer, or a fancy coffee maker, use the Evernote Web Clipper to clip each item and purchase information into a notebook. Make it a public notebook and send the link around. Maybe it will appear in your next care package!

How it works

When you come to a site that you’d like to read, click the Clearly lamp icon in your browser bar. The page is transformed—all distractions are removed, leaving only the content you want to read. Then, once you’re done, click on Clearly again and you’re back on the regular article.

Imagine getting through an article without clicking on a bunch of links before reaching the end. Now you can, with Clearly.

Save it to Evernote
If you don’t have time to finish the page you’re reading, click on the Evernote icon in the Clearly sidebar to save it into Evernote. In Preferences, you can also set a tag that will be associated with the pages you clip.

Multi-page clips
If you click Clearly on an article that’s broken up across multiple pages, Clearly will put everything into a single, long page.

Themes
Clearly arrives with three attractive built-in themes: Newsprint, Notable and Nightowl. If you’re a fan of customization, you can make your own by going into the Preferences.

I like getting comfortable when I read. I grab a cup of tea, sink into my favorite chair, put my feet up, and then crack open the book. Getting cozy and tuning out distractions helps me focus. How it works

Click on Clearly whenever you visit a blog post or article. Clearly slides in, showing an alternate view of the page without navigation, ads, or links to other content. When you’re done reading, click on the return arrow and Clearly slides out of the way, so you can continue browsing the site.

Multi-page articles
If you launch Clearly on a multi-page article, it will automatically turn it into a single page. No more clicking from one page to the next.

Save it for later

You don’t always have time to read everything in the moment. That’s why we built a web clipper right into Clearly. Click on the Evernote icon in the side bar, and the page will be saved into your Evernote account. You can even set tags to go along with all of your Clearly clips.

The auto-tag feature is a great way to easily create reading lists in Evernote that are accessible from any computer, phone or tablet you use.

Clearly offers three beautiful theme options:

• Newsprint: Like reading a newspaper
• Notable: Clean modern look
• Nightowl: Dark background, perfect for nighttime reading

Not a fan of the presets? You can make your own. Go into the extension preferences and create a custom theme. You can customize just about everything in Clearly from fonts to colors to alignments.

You can also customize keyboard shortcuts to launch Clearly and clip to Evernote.

Clearly does all of its processing magic right inside the browser. It never sends any content to Evernote, or anywhere else, until you choose do to so.
