We all interact with lots of files on a daily basis — everything from documents to spreadsheets to presentations. While we sit at our computers, creating and editing these files is easy, but the minute we go mobile, everything about this “easy” process goes from painful to nearly impossible.

Enter the cool integration between Evernote and Quickoffice Pro HD, a mobile office solution for your iPad.

When you connect Quickoffice Pro HD on your iPad to your Evernote account, you’ll be able to open any Office file contained in your Evernote account, make whatever changes you want, then save the updated version back into Evernote.

This partnership is all the more useful now that we’ve removed our free user file type restrictions.

Getting started

After downloading Quickoffice Pro HD to your iPad, find Evernote by tapping the “+” button in the lower left corner of the app. You’ll be asked to sign into your Evernote account and authorize the app.

Once synced with Quickoffice, you’ll see your Evernote account as a drive on the dashboard. Your notebooks will all appear as folders when you tap the drive. To edit a file saved in your Evernote account, tap on it. When you’re done, tap ‘Close’ in the upper left corner. Your changes will then be saved back into your Evernote account.

If you wish, you can also save your document as a PDF and send it into Evernote.

Be more productive with Quickoffice Pro HD and Evernote

Whether you’re heading back to school or working on a big project, we have some suggestions for how to make the most of this new integration:

Get work done on the go: Update documents while you’re traveling between home and the classroom or your office and the gym.

Collaborate on projects: make changes to documents in Quickoffice Pro HD, save to your Evernote account then drop it into a Shared Notebook so colleagues and teammates can all have access to the latest version.

Manage your workflow: Make changes and edits in Quickoffice Pro HD and have your updated documents available everywhere that you use Evernote.

Don’t be tied to your desk: Running out of a meeting early but need to wrap up your notes, or project plan? Drop the document into your Evernote account, finish working on it on your iPad on the plane, and email it to your colleagues or professor.

Add content into Evernote from your iPad: If someone emails you a Word doc, you can open it in Quickoffice Pro on your iPad, mark it up with your thoughts or edits, and save the updated file into Evernote as a new note with an attachment.

Just in time for back-to-school, check out a few of these other great integrations to help you ace next semester:

StudyBlue: a service for university students that lets you create digital flashcards and study guides from your notes. By syncing your Evernote account with StudyBlue, you can turn your notes into flashcards to help you study for your exams.

Explain Everything: an iPad app that lets you annotate, add audio narration, create dynamic, animated presentations, interactive whiteboards, and seamlessly save them to your Evernote account.

Life has enough complicated rules to keep track of, so we like to simplify wherever we can. In that spirit, we’re happy to say that we’ve just simplified how file attachments work for Free users. As many of you know, Free users had been previously limited to putting only text, image, audio and PDF files into their notes. That restriction is now gone, so both Free and Premium users can attach any type of file to a note. Easy Peasy.

Watch Your Head

The reason we lifted our file restriction is that we want to allow our users to store everything related to an experience or memory in a single, visual, searchable place. However, please keep in mind that the note size and monthly upload restrictions haven’t changed:

Free users can make a single note up to 25MB in size and can upload up to 60MBs of new stuff every month.

Premium users can make a single note up to 50MB in size and can upload up to 1GB of new stuff every month.

Adding files to Evernote

Now is probably a good time to refresh your memory on how to put files into Evernote. Virtually every version of Evernote supports adding files.

Desktop and Web

Mac: Drag a file into a note or onto the Evernote dock icon or use the File -> Attach File menu option.

Windows: Drag a file in a note or right click in a note and choose the File option.

Evernote Web: Edit a note, then drag a file onto the note header or click the paperclip icon.

Mobile

iOS: When viewing a file, tap the Share icon in the top right, then tap Open with…Evernote.

Android: When editing a note, tap the paper clip and choose File.

BlackBerry: From the home screen, tap on the Upload file option.

WebOS: Select File from the New Note screen.

We’re excited about this change because it will let more of you get more out of Evernote. We have lots of new features in the works, including some exciting ones for Premium users. Check out our Evernote Premium page to learn about all the great reason to go Premium.

JotNot for taking snapshots of my daily itinerary and saving them instantly to Evernote

I use Evernote for..

I first heard about Evernote about a year ago, but have become an avid user much more recently. Here are just a few of the ways that I use Evernote for teaching:

For sharing information with my students

Recently, there was a landslide in my area which blocked the roads and kept students from school for several weeks. Evernote’s Shared Notebooks became a simple way for me to give students a way to access class notes, worksheets, PowerPoints and labs. Even though they couldn’t make it to class, they didn’t fall behind. [How to start sharing in Evernote]

I put everything my students might need to access —worksheets, articles, and labs — into a Shared Notebook that they can access through a link or via Moodle, a service that our school district has integrated.

I have a Scanscap scanner, which I use to shoot worksheets straight into Evernote. Sometimes, I’ll scan student work that I think was particularly impressive. It’s a great way to acknowledge the work and share it with other students (via Shared Notebooks).

For research and labs

Before Evernote, I was bookmarking so many different websites for research purposes, or sending emails to myself with links. I found it so difficult to keep track of things I was reading on the Web. Now, I use Evernote’s Web Clipper to simply send things I want to remember to my Evernote account, where it is completely searchable and accessible whenever I need it.

I recently had all of my 8th grade students sign up for an Evernote account to help them do research. They clip articles from the web, take notes and track lab results in Evernote.

For extending the classroom beyond school walls

I put up a daily itinerary on the whiteboard for my students to see what we’ll be working on that day. For anyone who isn’t in class, I snap a photo of it and put it in Evernote. You can see all of the past daily itineraries in my Shared Notebook. I use JotNot to take those shots, which integrates really well with Evernote.

In the past, I’d come across interesting things related to topics we were studying in school (like environmental problems) that didn’t specifically fit into the day’s lesson plan. Now, I save articles and even video links to Evernote, where my students can see how their studies relate to the ‘real world.’

Our school, like many, is considering going to a 1:1 model. We’re trying to figure out how we can incorporate technology into the classroom in a more integrated way. The fact that Evernote can be accessed from virtually any device and syncs across devices means that no matter what technology we choose, teachers and students can continue to access all of their notes from anywhere they happen to be. [Learn more about 1:1 deployments]

User Tip

I like to keep my Evernote account clutter-free, especially for my students. I’ll occasionally go through my account and move notes around to different folders or delete them. My Shared Notebooks are always up to date and organized in a way that makes it easy for students to find what they’re looking for.
