A new feature for iOS and Android users gives even more heft to home cooks’ digital cookbooks: now, if you can’t find the recipe you’re looking for, you can search the web from within Evernote Food’s Explore Recipes search section and clip the recipes you find to My Cookbook. This feature rounds out a host of recent updates designed to make Evernote Food the ultimate digital cookbook app.

Additionally, recipes saved to Evernote as Word documents can now be viewed in Evernote Food, meaning that the app supports every popular format people tend to use for digital recipe collecting: Web Clipping, JPEGs, PDFs, and recipes you manually type and save to a notebook.

Get the latest Evernote Food for iOS »

Tips for Maximizing My Cookbook

Here are some tips for both iOS and Android users to maximize the sync between Evernote and Evernote Food to curate your recipe collection:

Have a treasured collection of grandma’s 3×5 recipe cards? Snap a photo and save the ones you want to your recipe notebook in Evernote, where they’ll automatically push to Evernote Food.

Scan or photograph printed recipes into Evernote, then view and cook from them on your phone or tablet using Evernote Food.

In addition to clipping recipes within the Evernote Food app, you can also use Evernote’s Web Clipper to save recipes in Evernote. Like magic, the recipes you clip will show up immediately in your Evernote Food cookbook.

Other New Features

A few more great updates in Evernote Food 2.2.2 for iOS (both already available to Android users) are the addition of restaurant directions (once you’ve researched a restaurant and booked a table within the app, you can now easily navigate there from the app), as well as an update to My Meals that lets users pinch-to-zoom when viewing photos in gallery view. More new features to come soon; let us know what you think!

Evernote Food makes it easy to use your iPad or iPhone as a digital cookbook, and a new feature for iOS users makes following a recipe even more seamless. Now, when you’ve opened a recipe you plan to make, your display won’t go to sleep while you’re cooking. You can follow a recipe without needing to re-enter your passcode to unlock your screen, creating a more efficient cooking process – and less flour on your device when you’re ready to clean up.

Additionally, digital cookbook organization of My Cookbook is now enhanced with PDF support for recipes imported into the app from Evernote, and new international recipe content is now available to users in Korea and Taiwan. These updates make My Cookbook an even better cooking companion. Android users, be sure to check out the new version of Evernote Food for Android, which includes many of these features.

Other updates to Evernote Food for iOS give a boost to the Restaurants section. Foursquare venue ratings are now available in list view, meaning that anytime you want to eat out, you can quickly scan ratings and other essential info for each restaurant on your list, rather than having to tap each spot individually to see the details. Improved search for restaurants also yields greater accuracy for nearby places and search results.

Lastly, if you’re not already an Evernote Premium user, you can now upgrade within the app, giving you faster support, all the storage you need for your recipes, restaurants, and meals, and many more benefits across the whole collection of Evernote apps.

We’re incredibly excited to announce that Evernote Food 2.0 for Android has arrived! We’ve been hard at work for months perfecting it for our Android users, and we think you’ll find it worth the wait. Let’s take a spin through the features that make the app the only companion you need to discover, collect, and remember the food you love.

Get Evernote Food 2.0 on Google Play »

From Home Cooking to Haute Cuisine: The Essential App for Food Lovers

Like Evernote, Evernote Food was designed not just as a tool to help organize your life, but as an essential companion to inspire and capture the milestones along the way. Evernote Food is divided into four sections (Explore Recipes, My Cookbook, Restaurants, and My Meals) that together form an ever-evolving chronicle of your life in food. From exploring new recipes to curating your own digital cookbook, keeping a journal or planning a trip to a faraway place, Evernote Food gives you the tools to pursue and document your food passions.

Explore Recipes: Browse and Search Thousands of Recipes

Picture this: it’s a gorgeous spring morning and you’re at the farmers market. A bounty of seasonal fruits and vegetables surrounds you, generating equal parts inspiration and overwhelm. What to choose? Evernote Food’s Explore Recipes section has your back. Heirloom tomatoes in season? Just search by ingredient and see recipes from a broad array of the best food blogs and sites. Whether you’re out and about or relaxing at home, just open the app on your phone or tablet to see thousands of recipes from the best food blogs and sites to browse, search, and save. Tap any recipe that strikes your fancy. If you like what you see, tap the elephant icon at the top right of the screen to clip it to the My Cookbook section.

My Cookbook: Your Beautiful Digital Recipe Collection

If you love to cook, recipe collecting can be kind of a scattered process. You constantly find recipes from a variety of seemingly incompatible sources: online, in print, and much-loved 3×5 cards from mom’s or grandma’s recipe box. If you don’t have a system, it’s challenging to navigate your options, much less choose a recipe or plan a meal. This is where Evernote and Evernote Food can make your cooking life a whole lot easier – and make you a better cook in the process.

Recipe Collecting Made Easy
If you’ve been using Evernote to store recipes, you likely have recipes in different formats: ones you’ve scanned or photographed, those you’ve manually typed into a note, and recipes you’ve clipped using the desktop Web Clipper. Evernote Food recognizes these as recipes and will automatically bring them into your digital cookbook. Just tap My Cookbook in the app, then scroll to find the recipes you’ve saved in Evernote Food and Evernote. Tap a recipe and you’re ready to get cooking.

Your Cooking Companion
One big benefit of Evernote is that it automatically syncs your notes across all of your devices. This means that if you’ve been using your Android tablet to clip recipes for a special dinner, you can then take your phone to the grocery store use the recipe’s ingredient list to shop. When you’ve returned home, use your tablet to follow along with the recipe as you cook, capturing photos and notes in the app using the My Meals feature during the process.

Restaurants: Build a Wish List, Book a Table

Like My Cookbook, the Restaurants feature allows you collect all the restaurants you want to try in a tidy list ready to inform your next outing. Whether you want to experience a new hot spot or plan your food itinerary for an upcoming trip, Evernote Food lets you build your own ultimate restaurant wish list and book a table when you’re ready to dine.

Plan Your Next Food Adventure
Using the app to discover new restaurants is simple. Just tap the search field at the top of the screen and type in your search by name, cuisine, or dish. The app automatically searches near your current location. To search elsewhere, tap in the location field and enter another city anywhere in the world. In seconds, a list and map of restaurants for your search will appear along with colorful cuisine icons to help you scan for the type of meal you’re craving. Tap the map icon at the top right of the screen to see the locations displayed in map view, then tap the list icon to return to that view.

Select a Restaurant, Book a Table
When you see a restaurant that grabs your interest, tap it to see the details, including address, phone number, and website. Evernote Food also includes Foursquare venue ratings and menus. The icing on the cake? Evernote Food recently partnered with OpenTable to let you quickly book your table within the app.

My Meals: Create & Share Your Food Photo Essays

My Meals has been re-imagined to be better than ever. Use it to create gorgeous shareable photo essays documenting all of your food adventures, from the step-by-step process of baking a cake to capturing a birthday dinner out with friends. The interface for My Meals is easy to navigate, and it’s simple to either take photos in the moment or attach them from your device gallery to create a note later. The photos display right alongside your personalized captions for each image.

You can add a title and location to each meal, as well as a short description of the note. Go back and edit a note anytime to perfect it, from swapping out images to tweaking captions. When your note is finished, you’ll find the multiple sharing options available to Android users by tapping the overflow or options menu. From posting via Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and more, the app lets you share the food you love with friends and family however you wish.

Recently Viewed: A Handy Reference

One feature exclusive to Android is the Recently Viewed feature. This feature displays alongside whatever section you are viewing and provides a constant reference point to the recipes you’ve been exploring and the meals you’ve been contemplating.

Discover, Collect, Remember the Food You Love

We can’t wait to hear what you think of the new Evernote Food for Android. Give it a try and tell us your impressions. Bon appetit!

This time of year, the siren song of the road trip calls our name. Where to go and, more importantly, what to eat?

Evernote Food is the perfect companion to not only help plan your trip, but to accompany you on the open road. Yes, half the joy is in discovering places along the way. But it’s also good to have a bit of a plan in place for when you arrive. With this in mind, today’s Quick Tip on how to use Evernote Food to assist in planning your food travels is right on time.

Don’t have Evernote Food 2.1? Download it for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch now ».

Let’s take a peek at this feature via my own upcoming trip to Nashville.

1. Set your location to the city you’ll be visiting in order to pull restaurant results from that location. Then, search for a restaurant. In the South, the cuisine is diverse, but neighborhood joints with fried food and meat & threes will always top my personal list.

2. Once the restaurant you want comes up in your search, tap the scissors icon at the top right of your screen to save it into your personalized list.

3. Repeat this step until all of the food spots you want to visit are on your list!

(Bonus tip: when you arrive at your destination, your smartphone or tablet will recognize your location and display the list of restaurants at your destination city at the top of your saved list.)

Editor's note: The transition from winter to spring typically (maddeningly) unfolds in fits and starts. Here in the Bay Area, we'll revel in a 70 degree day only to be greeted the next by dour skies and frigid winds. Amidst the weather's predictable ambivalence, each year we can count on strawberries to offer sweet reassurance that warmer days are near. As part of Evernote's Spring Made Simple series, the Evernote Food team reached out to one of our favorite food bloggers, Adrianna Adarme of A Cozy Kitchen, for a recipe to properly celebrate spring's most iconic and steadfast fruit.

Editor’s note: The transition from winter to spring typically (maddeningly) unfolds in fits and starts. Here in the Bay Area, we’ll revel in a 70 degree day only to be greeted the next by dour skies and frigid winds. Amidst the weather’s predictable ambivalence, each year we can count on strawberries to offer sweet reassurance that warmer days are near. As part of Evernote’s Spring Made Simple series, the Evernote Food team reached out to one of our favorite food bloggers, Adrianna Adarme of A Cozy Kitchen, for a recipe to properly celebrate spring’s most iconic and steadfast fruit.

The world of doughnuts is divided into two categories: cake and yeast. I’m going to embarrassingly admit that I haven’t yet mastered the light-as-a-feather homemade yeasted doughnut recipe (in the past they’ve been more like stiff-as-a-board). And while this reality saddens me daily, I do nothing about it, and it’s not because I don’t care about yeasted doughnuts, because I do. Oh I do. It’s because I despise deep-frying at home. Deep-frying requires lots of lots of oil and the worst part? Disposing it after your fry-fest. That’s why I adore baked doughnuts. These baked doughnuts are of the cake variety, but rather than having a firm, big crumb like most cake doughnuts, these are pillowy soft with a small crumb.

Anyone who loves trying out the hottest new restaurants knows how challenging it can be to keep track of all the different places on your list. With the launch of Evernote Food 2.0 in December, we debuted features to inspire food lovers to build the ultimate restaurant wish list. Now, among other new features, we’ve added another handy tool to make exploring new restaurants a seamless experience: OpenTable booking within the app.

Learn more about how to create a restaurant wish list in Evernote Food

Don’t have Evernote Food 2.1? Download it for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch now »

Here’s a quick rundown of how this feature works.

1. Open the Restaurants section in Evernote Food on your iPhone or iPad. Search for restaurants in a chosen destination and choose the one you want to try. From here, you can either add the restaurant to your Saved list or book a table right away.

2. Once you’ve selected a restaurant, you can review all the essential information you need prior to booking a table, including Foursquare venue ratings and even the menu. If you like what you see, tap ‘Make a reservation.’

3. From here, you’ll recognize the familiar OpenTable booking flow. Just select the date, time, and number of people you want a table for and confirm your reservation.

(Bonus tip: When you visit a restaurant, create a My Meals note to capture the highlights of the experience with photos and captions. To see all the spots you’ve visited, tap the My Meals tab in Restaurants. The restaurants you’ve visited that are associated with your My Meals notes will show up here.

The latest update to Evernote Food for iOS is rich with tools for cooks who want to get serious about curating their digital cookbooks. One feature we’re really excited about shows the power of Evernote’s ability to sync with Evernote Food to allow you to truly customize your recipe collection.

Many seasoned Evernote users have been saving recipes to their Evernote accounts for a while. If you’re like us and you’re more than a little obsessed with collecting recipes, then your food-related notebooks may include recipes in various formats, from JPEGs to web clips to scanned and hand-typed ones.

With Evernote Food 2.1, you can now import designated notebooks with all of these recipes into My Cookbook in Evernote Food. You can also do this with tags if that’s how you organize the notes.

Don’t have Evernote Food 2.1? Download it for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch now ».

Let’s review how this feature works.

1. First, launch the app and tap the elephant icon at the top left corner of the screen.

2. Scroll down to Recipe Settings. Tap ‘Include Recipes from Account.’

3. To select Notebooks, tap ‘Include notebooks.’ To select tags, tap ‘Include tags.’

4. On the Notebooks screen, choose the Evernote Notebooks that contain the recipes you want to see in Evernote Food. You can select as many as you want. Don’t worry, you can change your selections whenever you like.

Bonus Tip: make sure to edit your recipe notebooks in Evernote before getting to this step, so only the recipes you want to import show up in Evernote Food. If recipes show up in the app that you don’t want there, you can hide them by tapping the edit tool at the bottom of the recipe screen and then tapping ‘Hide.’

The steps are exactly the same to select tags assigned to recipes you want to see in Evernote Food.

5. Once you’ve made all of your Notebook and tag selections, exit from Settings and open the My Cookbook section in the app. Et voila! You’ll now see all of your recipes in one place within Evernote Food. Give this feature a spin and let us know how it works for you.

Our most vibrant memories often revolve around food. They’re the family dinners, the night market adventures, and the romantic getaways that shape who we are. Evernote Food is designed to help you capture and remember those moments forever. Today, we’re bringing you a bunch of great new features that will let you better plan your meals and share them with others. Let’s take a look.

Get Evernote Food 2.1 from the App Store »

Ratings and Reservations

Evernote Food excels at helping you discover restaurants and document the experiences, but it’s been missing one key element of the dining out experience: making a reservation. Now, you can. The new Evernote Food come with OpenTable’s reservation system built right into the app.

When you’re browsing through the Restaurants section, tap on a place you’d like to add to your restaurant wish list. If the restaurant is listed on OpenTable, then you’ll see a Make a Reservation option. From there, you’ll go through the familiar OpenTable booking process.

To make it easy to choose between so many restaurant options, we also included Foursquare ratings. They show up to the right, just under the restaurant’s name on the Place Details screen.

Share your recipes

Besides giving you ideas for places to eat out, Evernote Food can also inspire you to dine in with thousands of the web’s best recipes right at your fingertips. We’ve taken this one step further by allowing you to inspire others. You’re now able to share the recipes that you’ve clipped with friends via Twitter, Facebook, or email.

Bring in all of your Evernote recipes

Like many of our users, I’ve been saving recipes and food inspirations in Evernote for years – well before we launched Evernote Food. As of this update, any recipe I save to Evernote will sync to Evernote Food. This update lets bring in entire notebooks of content from Evernote, or choose notes to import by tag. No matter what the recipes are, they will now show up in the My Cookbook section of Evernote Food.

To do this, tap on the elephant icon in the top left corner of the home screen. Next, tap on the Include Recipes from Account option. From there, you can choose as many notebooks and tags as you’d like. After a sync (the app syncs automatically, but you can also tap ‘Sync Now’ in the Settings menu if you prefer), your new notes will show up in the My Cookbook section alongside all the other food-related notes you’ve saved.

And more…

We’re very excited about this update. In addition to all the goodies described above, we now let you choose photos from any album on your device, we sped up image uploads, and improved search results. Evernote Food lovers in China and Japan will also now be able to search recipes from top regional publishers. We hope you enjoy everything that this update has to offer. Try it out and let us know what you think.

How did writing The 4-Hour Chef change your appreciation of eating and cooking?
Before writing The 4-Hour Chef (4HC), I hadn’t really tasted food. Back then, food was either good or bad, hot or cold, spicy or not. I was microwaving liquid egg whites in plastic (!) containers, for God’s sake. Now, I have a flavor vocabulary — I can pick out the subtleties: the cilantro or tarragon, the umami savoriness, or the lack of vinegar.

It’s like going from a 7″ black-and-white TV to HD. Before 4HC, much of my life was in black and white. The awareness you build in the kitchen and in related adventures affects everything. Life itself becomes high-definition. Even if you never cook after a week of experiments, that week can upgrade your eating for the rest of your life.

How can learning how to cook teach people how to master any skill?
Whether you want to learn how to speak a new language in three months, how to shoot a three-pointer in one weekend, or how to memorize a deck of cards in less than a minute, the true “recipe” of this book is a blueprint called “meta-learning.” This is a collection of techniques I gathered by traveling around the world studying the fastest learners on the planet.

I chose cooking as the way to tell a story about learning because A) I’d failed at cooking many times and wanted to simplify it so anyone (including me) could master it, and B) it involves all five senses. The kitchen is the perfect dojo for improving all of your senses, and therefore all learning.

What is your best food memory?

There are so, so many. Here are just a few off the top of my head, all of which are in the book:

Planning and doing a NYC “Food Marathon”: 26.2 iconic dishes in 26 locations in 24 hours… all on foot. AMAZING.

Cramming six months of culinary school techniques into a single weekend, done with the help of culinary school teachers and chefs.

Spending three days deconstructing Alinea restaurant in Chicago. At the time of writing, it was the #1 ranked restaurant in the U.S. Chef Grant Achatz is like the Michael Jordan plus Wayne Gretzky plus Tiger Woods of cooking.

The list goes on and on.

Three seemingly simple dishes that require master skills?
Hmmm… I’ll answer the opposite instead. Seemingly complicated, awesome dishes that can be prepared in 10 minutes or less hands-on time:

Osso Buco for 4-6 people

Harissa Crab Cakes

Rock ‘N’ Eel — eel on top of broccoli “rice” (This one is incredible.)

Bacon-Infused Bourbon

Favorite breakfast?
Definitely, North African-spiced scrambled eggs + lentils + spinach. It can be prepared in the same time I used to take to microwave liquid egg whites. The combination of whole eggs, lentils, and spinach has incredible fat-loss properties… and it tastes delicious. The best salt to use is either Maldon sea salt or white truffle sea salt. Maldon might just change your life.
