Evernote

There’s certainly no doubting our commitment to mobile. Since launching Evernote, we’ve released versions for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Palm’s WebOS (Pre and Pixi), Windows Mobile, and a mobile web version (http://www.evernote.com/m) for other phones. We also recently announced partnerships with Nokia on their N900 and with Samsung Android phones. And that’s not all. More mobile goodness is on the way, so stay tuned.

Evernote has grown very quickly over the past year, and it’s time to give our servers and facilities a major upgrade to ensure that we can keep growing without a hitch!

We will be performing some maintenance on the Evernote Service on Saturday, February 6th from 11am through around 4pm Pacific Time (1900 to 2400 GMT). We’ll be bringing up servers as they’re ready, so some users will have access to their accounts sooner than others. We’re sorry for any inconvenience that this downtime will cause.

What to expect

Once the maintenance period begins, you will no longer be able to perform any operations that require access to the Evernote Service. These include, synchronization, image recognition, emailing to/from Evernote, and the @myEN Twitter integration. Desktop versions of Evernote will continue to function.

How will I be affected?

Different platforms will be affected in somewhat different ways. Here’s what to expect:

Evernote on the desktop

If you use Evernote on Windows or Mac, then you will see the smallest disruption. You will still have access to all of your notes, but you will not be able to sync any new content until the service comes back up.

iPhone and iPod Touch

If you are a free subscriber, then you will be able to create notes, view your favorites, and see any notes that you had previously viewed or created on the device. If you’re a Premium subscriber, then you will be able to access any/all notebooks that you’ve previously marked for offline access. In either case, you will not be able to sync any new content. Please anticipate any notes that you’ll want to access during the downtime and either view them, favorite them, or download the notebook(s) that contain them before Saturday.

Android, Palm Pre, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile

If you use Evernote on a device listed above, then you will be able to create new notes, but will not be able to access any of your existing notes.

Evernote Web and Mobile Web

Evernote Web will be completely unavailable during the maintenance period.

Why we’re doing this

Our goal is to ensure that you have the best possible experience using Evernote. This was true when we had 10,000 users and it’s true now that we have 2.3 million. Saturday’s upgrades will help us continue to do so for years to come.

We’re excited about the shiny new Evernote!

Evernote is free. You can use Evernote forever without paying us a cent, and we’re ok with that. To some, this may seem crazy, but thanks to Evernote Premium, it’s actually a business model that works (see: Freemium model).

Today, we’re announcing that there are more ways than ever to go Premium. We now accept credit card payments with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, and JCB. These are in addition to Google Checkout, PayPal and in-app purchasing through the Apple AppStore. We’re also offering 3-months of Evernote Premium for free through TrialPay. Click on the TrialPay option on our Checkout page for more information.

Go Premium now »

Why go premium?

Supersized monthly uploads

Your monthly upload allowance will be increased from 40MB to 500MB. Each month, you get reset to a fresh 500MB.

Attach and sync files

As a free user your notes can contain text, audio, images, and PDFs. Once you go Premium, you can put any type of file into your notes, including Word docs, PowerPoint presentations, Photoshop files, and just about anything else. Then, watch as these files sync and become accessible from anywhere.

Offline notebooks on iPhone and iPod Touch

Take any and all of your notebooks offline. Not only does this make accessing your notes faster, but it also means you can browse and search even when there’s no network connection available.

Search through your PDFs

When a Premium user throws a scanned document PDF into Evernote, we run it through our servers making the text searchable.

Collaborate with others

You can share your notebooks with individuals and the world through Evernote Web. Premium users can allow other to both view and edit their notes, turning Evernote into a great collaboration tool.

And more…

No ads in the desktop and web versions

One business day response for your support requests

Priority treatment by our image recognition technology

Better security through SSL encryption

Always remember

You can switch from free to Premium and back to free at any time and you’ll never lose anything you created while you were Premium.

Evernote loves tablets. We’ve got a long and storied history with tablets of all kinds. Got an old tablet lying around somewhere? Chances are we either developed technology for it, had applications that ran on it, or both. Usually both.

Remember the awesome Apple Newton? Evernote’s current R&D engineers developed the handwriting recognition technology that made it so notable (and ahead of its time). Remember those Doonesbury strips making fun of the Newton? You know who cried when those came out? We did. Well, not me personally, I was in college and the Newton was at the top of my unattainable gadget drool-list, but the guys sitting next to me right now clutching their Newton prototypes while watching the Apple liveblogs did. I’ve got those Donnesbury strips in my Evernote account now.

We’ve also been on just about every other form of tablet known to man. The original version of Evernote was written to run on Tablet PCs and the digital ink technology in the current version of Evernote for Windows is still the best in the industry. I even use an old Hitachi slate as a drink tray at home. Tablets are our roots, man. Our roots.

So naturally, we’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about our plans for supporting Apple’s hitherto-mythical tablet device, but we’ve avoided answering them just in case it turned out not to be a tablet but, um, a shoe or something. Still, we always hoped it’d be a tablet. You always remember your first love…

Anyway, now that the iPad has officially gone from “imminent!!” to “just announced!!” we can officially spill the beans on our official plans for Evernote on it. Here’s we go:

Evernote is going to support the Apple iPad. Oh Yeah. We’re gonna support the hell out of it. We’re glad to see that the current Evernote iPhone app will run on the iPad without modification, but we’ll be modifying it anyway to optimize the experience on the larger device. Oh how we’ll be modifying it! Expect rapid improvements to our iPhone app which will benefit all of our iPhone, iPod Touch and, now, iPad users in the near future.

Ok, so we’re excited by the iPad itself, and by the HP Slate, and the Sony VAIO L series, and the Nvidia Tegra, and by the added light that these and other devices will shine on touch computing in general. I’m looking at some happy engineers right now.

The New York Times named Evernote one of its Five Tech Themes to Watch in 2010!

“Evernote, the popular note-taking service, recently announced it had hit a major milestone by surpassing two million members. But the company’s victory signals a larger shift in how the Web – and our mobile phones – are becoming a larger repository for our memories. Companies like Evernote are paving the way, but expect to see more entrepreneurs and start-ups vying to supplement our gray matter with silicon.” [via NYT, read full article]

We couldn’t agree more. Evernote’s goal is to help the world remember everything. Ambitious? Yes. But, in these days of information overload, it’s absolutely critical.

Stay tuned for an exciting year.

“What do you want for Christmas?”, Robert De Niro asks Jean Reno in Ronin, just before engaging in some spirited gunplay. “My two front teeth.”

Well, all we wanted for Christmas was two million users. And we got it, big time, pushed over the line by great numbers from our recent Android and iPhone launches! And we did it in about half the time it took us to get our first million.

Obviously, we couldn’t have gotten two million users without, um, our users. So here’s what you did to make it possible:

I’m very happy to report that Evernote just raised $10 million in our “B” round! The lead investor is Morgenthaler Ventures, one of the deans of Silicon Valley venture capital. Troika Dialog and DOCOMO Capital, our “A” round investors, participated as well.

What will we do with the money? We’re going to invest it into making our product better: more platforms, more features, and more polish (we’re working on Polish, too, along with Swedish, Japanese and a dozen other languages). We want Evernote to be your trusted, permanent and ubiquitous electronic memory. This investment gives us the runway to get there.

I’d like to thank our team, who’ve worked amazingly hard to build one of the brightest companies on the Internet today; our investors, for giving us their trust; and, most of all, our awesome community of users. Your voice has helped guide our product, and your enthusiasm for Evernote was a critical factor in our successful fundraising.

Thanks for finding us and thanks for sticking with us. We’re glad you’re along for the ride!

Do we have an exciting Food Month treat for you! Evernote has teamed up with the amazingly great Foodzie.com for an exclusive San Francisco tasting event for six lucky Evernoters.

What is Foodzie?

Foodzie is a marketplace devoted to small and artisanal food producers from around the US. They carry an obscene amount of deliciousness (just wait till you see the food photos). Best off all, they help you discover locally-made foods that you never knew existed.

What’s the theme?

As any San Franciscan will tell you, a party ain’t a party without a theme. So, for our tasting, the theme will be Tasty Gifts. Although I’m convinced that anything from this site will make a tasty gift, the folks at Foodzie have hand-selected their absolute favorite products just for us. Personally, I’m a fan of this, this, this, and this.

As a very special bonus, some of the producers will be on hand to tell us about their gourmet vittles.

When? Where?

Date: October 29th
Time: 6pm
Location: San Francisco, CA

Special gift from Yak Pak

In addition to the culinary goodness, all attendees will get a super special gift from the great bag-producing folks at Yak Pak. If you’re not familiar with these guys you need to check them out.

Interested in joining us?

If you would like to join us, please leave a comment below telling us your favorite way to use Evernote. We will randomly select six (6) people from among the commenters. Everyone selected will be allowed to bring one guest to the event. We will contact the selected individual via email, so be sure to use a valid email when leaving your comment. To be considered, comments must be submitted by 12pm PT on Wednesday October 21st. Good luck!

Can’t make it? Don’t worry. There’s more Foodzie excitement to come. Stay tuned.

Mmmmm, food. Mouth-watering, yummy, delicious food. For many of us at Evernote (and many of you out there), food is much more than a necessity—it’s a hobby, a job, a fascination, a passion, and maybe even a bit of an obsession.

If you’re anything like me, then food-related thoughts enter your mind with embarrassing frequency. From recipes to restaurant reviews to gadgets to cookbooks, it seems there’s always something worth throwing into Evernote for later. Without exaggeration, Evernote is the greatest food companion I’ve ever had (sorry friends and family). As it turns out, I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Welcome to Food Month

And so begins Evernote’s Food Month, our exploration of all the many ways gastronomy and Evernote intersect. Throughout October, we will bring you user stories, videos, tips, community projects, giveaways, and tons of other great stuff all around the topic of food and Evernote.

Let’s get cooking!

We’re really excited about our first Food Month activity: seasonal recipe cooking class. We’ve enlisted the help of Laurine Wickett, chef and owner of Left Coast Catering (and Top Chef contestant) to use Evernote to put a new twist on your favorite seasonal recipes.

UPDATE: The video is up! Thanks Kanton for the recipe suggestion.

How it works

Leave a comment on this post telling us your favorite fall main and side dishes. You can either give us the name of the dish, a personal recipe, a favorite one, or link to a recipe on the web. If you provide a recipe, make sure to always give appropriate attribution.

Later in the month, Laurine will use Evernote to prepare her favorites from among the submitted dishes for a special video segment.

Lots more to come

Stay tuned for tons of great ideas on how to use Evernote to turn your notable world into an edible one.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, we want there to be an Evernote in your language. To make that happen, we recently launched a community translation project to translate Evernote into French, German, Italian, and Spanish. This has been going really well, and now we’re ready to start the next part of the project: optimizing our handwriting recognition for these new languages.

Once again, we would like your help. Below are text samples in the languages we are currently working on. Please write them out in your language of choice, using your natural handwriting. If you make a mistake, just cross it out and keep going. Then, send us the result.

Cool bonus: Helping us means that Evernote should recognize your handwriting particularly well. That could come in handy later.

What you need

Blank, white sheet of paper

A pen with black ink (preferably a roller ball)

Scanner or digital camera

How this works

Write out one or more of the sample texts below

Scan or photograph the piece of paper (separate ones for each sample)

Email the image (JPG, PNG, PDF) to our translations mailbox

Four text samples

French PDF

Italian PDF

German PDF

Spanish PDF

Visit our translation project page for more information. Thanks for helping us make Evernote better.

We recently proposed a panel for next year’s SXSW (South by Southwest) Interactive Festival and we’d love your vote. Here’s the panel description:

Preserving the You: Creating Memories Beyond the Chatter

We want to discuss how mobile and cloud-based technologies have paved the way not only for increased communication via Facebook, Twitter, and the like, but also for new ways of preserving our memories and individuality.

These days, each of us is continually involved in increasingly public conversations with friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and complete strangers. However, we all simultaneously live within our own worlds–ones consisting of delicate webs of experiences, inspirations, ideas, and interests. In our proposed SXSW panel, we will talk about how, in the face of the lightning-fast, community-driven landscape of Web 2.0, there exists a parallel world of technologies aimed at helping to capture and preserve who we are as individuals.

We will discuss the ways in which lessons learned from social media–availability, access, collaboration–can be applied to personally relevant content in an effort to preserve the YOU in the face of the WE.

Vote!

If you like our panel idea, please head on over to the Panel Picker page and vote for us. Voting closes on September 3rd. Thanks!

If you took a map of the world and threw a dart at it, you would likely hit an area with an Evernote community. We’re thrilled to see just how widespread Evernote use has become over the past year, and we know that we’re only scratching the surface.

Starting today, we embark on an ambitious plan to make Evernote accessible to more people in more places. Say bonjour to the Evernote Translation Program.

Que?

Evernote is currently available in two languages: English and Russian. By year’s end, we plan on having Evernote versions in French, German, Italian, and Spanish. For a company of our size this is a tremendous task, so we need your help.

How you can help

It’s easy. We have deployed a simple web-based tool that allows you to translate as much, or as little, of Evernote as you like. Want to translate a single line of text? Great. Want to translate the entire Evernote for Mac client? Go for it. The tool will let you do all of this, and also edit existing translations. There’s no commitment and no minimum. We appreciate any help that you provide.

Why did we choose community translation?

Our goal is to make Evernote accessible to as many people as possible. We chose the four languages above as a start (and a test). If this process proves successful, more languages will follow. Ultimately, using this translation method allows us to focus our very limited resources on the most important task of all: making Evernote better.

We’ll do our part

Community translation is just one step in the process of launching Evernote in different countries. While you help us translate, our researchers and engineers will be busy making our image recognition and other technologies ready for their international debut.

Get started

To get started, visit the Evernote Translation Program home »

Danke schoen!
