Here’s a short tale of my list-making woes: I’m going shopping and I need olive oil, so I write down “olive oil.” This somewhat sensible decision quickly turns into 20 minutes spent staring blankly at the supermarket’s wall of olive oils. Or when traveling, I’ll write “visit the Corn Palace” only to misplace any relevant information about its history or importance.

You’re right, I should be more organized, but this whole process needs to be easier. My lists shouldn’t be denser, they should be smarter. Enter reQall’s Evernote integration.

reQall in their own words

reQall is a voice-enabled memory aid that seamlessly integrates your mobile phone, email, text messaging and IM into a powerful organizer, reminder system and productivity assistant. reQall lets you capture your ideas, tasks and commitments before you forget, and it proactively keeps you well-prepared and memory-strong.

The integration

reQall used the Evernote API to make lists and reminders incredibly useful. Whenever you speak or type an item into reQall, their service automatically searches your Evernote account to find any related notes. Then, when reQall reminds you of your task, you can quickly call up any relevant Evernote content without leaving the reQall application. It’ll even search for keywords inside of images.

Why this is cool

Here’s a Food Month-friendly example of why this is exciting. You’re throwing a dinner party and you need to pick up supplies. First, create your shopping list by speaking or typing it into reQall on the web or your iPhone.

Once at the store, tap on “Zinfandel,” and reQall brings up the note in Evernote of a Zinfandel you loved while on a trip through wine country. Need some wine glasses? Good thing you clipped the page from Crate and Barrel into Evernote.

The beauty of all this is that it’s incredibly simple and doesn’t require changing your workflow. From shopping to event planning to business meetings to travel, everything you need to remember is right at your fingertips. No extra effort required.

Get reQall

The Evernote integration is a part of reQall Pro.
JotNot for iPhone is a nifty app that corrects your less-than-perfect photos and sends them into Evernote. Whether you’ve taken a snapshot of a business card at a wacky angle, a photos of a whiteboard under poor lighting conditions, or an off-kilter receipt, JotNot will magically fix contrast and let you correct the angles—turning your snapshot into a straightened, cleaner version of its former self. It’s like turning your iPhone camera into a scanner.

The results are pretty impressive, and (here’s the best part) it’s great for Evernote.

The integration

JotNot used the Evernote API to develop their latest release. The paid version of JotNot allows you to send your improved images into Evernote (you can even assign titles, tags, and notebooks right from their app). Once in Evernote, those images will be processed by our recognition technology and made available on your computer, phone, and the web.

How to use it

Install JotNot on your iPhone

Snap a photo of a whiteboard, business card, book jacket…

Adjust the image in JotNot by aligning the edges of the blue box

Let it process

Send the image to Evernote

Voila!

Get it

The Evernote integration is part of the paid version of JotNot. Get it now »

We hope you’re enjoying our Summer to Unclutter series. In the spirit of the season, we’d like to share a story of how we conquered the clutter in our own office. Don’t miss the surprise at the end of this post.

A few months ago we moved into a sunny new office space. While most of the office looked nice and clean, our storage closet quickly began to resemble a garbage heap.

Around this time, we came across a great post on Rubbermaid’s Adventures in Organization Blog, in which Jim Deitzel and crew helped a lucky subscriber take control of a messy garage with the help of some know-how and a few nifty Rubbermaid containers. We were inspired. So much so, that we came up with a simple 4-step method that uses Evernote and Rubbermaid to help you stay organized for good.

Pack it: Fill your Rubbermaid storage box

Label it: Place a clearly written label on the container

Snap it: Use your cameraphone or digital camera to snap a photo of the label and container contents

Note it: Add the photos into Evernote, then title the note. You can also type a quick list of the box contents. If you keep the containers in different rooms, make sure to note where the containers are located.

What’s where

By using this method, you will always know exactly what you’ve stored and where everything is. A quick search in Evernote will show you photos and contents of each container. And don’t forget, Evernote works on your computer and phone, so you can access this information whenever you need.

Rubbermaid giveaway (it’s over)

To help jump start your uncluttering project, we’ve teamed up with Rubbermaid for an exciting giveaway. We’re giving away four Rubbermaid gift packs. Each gift pack contains four 15-quart storage boxes and three 18-gallon storage boxes.

How to enter

It only takes two steps to enter:

Follow @evernote and @rubbermaid on Twitter

Send a public Twitter message to @evernote containing the hashtag #evernote_rubbermaid

Just one tweet gets you entered. <strike>We’ll announce</strike> We announced the winners on Wednesday September 2nd at noon on our Facebook fan page. Stay tuned and good luck. Winners will be contacted via direct message on Twitter, so be sure to follow @evernote.

This giveaway is open to Evernote users in the United States (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) and Canada.

Talk about a perfect match…

The latest release of the very popular Associated Press application for iPhone lets you effortlessly clip AP articles into your Evernote account. Here’s the scenario: you’re browsing through the latest local, national, and international news on your iPhone when you stumble across a story about a man caught smuggling 91 lobsters in his jacket. You think to yourself, “I must get this into Evernote so that I’ll have it forever, but how?”

Why this is cool

The AP Mobile application allows you to access enormous amounts of news and information whenever you’re out and about. Thanks to the integration, you can now save any article and access it later from any version of Evernote that you use —mobile, desktop, or web. Also, all articles clipped from AP Mobile retain their source URL, so you can always go back to the original or easily share it with friends.

How it works

First, make sure that you have both the AP Mobile and Evernote applications installed on your iPhone. Next, follow these four simple steps:

Launch the Associated Press app

Choose on an article

Tap on the “Forward” arrow

Select Evernote

That’s it!

How they did it

The Associated Press used the Evernote API along with new functionality available in the iPhone 3.0 software that allows different applications to interact with one another right on the iPhone.

For more information, please read the AP press release: The Associated Press launches AP Mobile news app for iPhone version 3.0, adding push notification of breaking news and emergency updates.

The Evernote API

About AP Mobile

AP Mobile is an award-winning multimedia news portal developed by The Associated Press, a leader in the mobile news market. AP Mobile gives users news they can choose and provides anytime access to international, national and local news. AP was the first to debut a dedicated iPhone news application in June 2008, offering AP’s own worldwide coverage of breaking news, sports, entertainment, politics and business as well as content from more than 1,000 AP members and third-party sources. www.apnews.com

Evernote and Pixily have teamed up to help you get rid of all the paper that clutters your, very un-paperless, life. From documents to scraps to receipts, everything is digitized by Pixily and made available in Evernote for easy access any time you like –you barely have to lift a finger.

In their own words

Pixily is an interactive document management service that helps consumers and small businesses be more organized and efficient. Our users send paper documents to Pixily. Upon receipt, Pixily scans, categorizes and uploads the documents to a customer’s web account, where they can be securely accessed by authorized users from any location.

Why this is cool

Evernote is a single place for all of the things you want to remember. Now with Pixily, you can keep all those piles and piles of documents right next to your notes and webclips and snapshots all accessible in Evernote the instant you need them.

How it works

Collect all your papers and place them into a pre-paid Pixily envelope. If an envelope just won’t suffice, Pixily also has pre-paid UPS boxes. Once they get your documents, Pixily scans everything into your personal online account. From there, simply click on the “Send to Evernote” button and the scans shoot over to the notebook of your choice. Setup instructions are available on the Pixily blog.

Get $10 OFF

For a limited time, Pixily is offering Evernote users a $10 discount. To take advantage of the discount, follow this link or type EVERNOTE into the coupon code field during checkout.

Some time ago we published a post explaining how to scan directly into Evernote for Mac. In this post, I’ll explain how to set up the Fujitsu ScanSnap to work with Evernote for Windows.

Fujitsu ScanSnap

We’re big fans of the Fujitsu ScanSnap for a bunch of reasons: it scans both sides of a multipage document, auto-rotates and discards blank pages, OCRs the text, and, most importantly, can be set to deposit the resulting PDF into Evernote. It has become an indispensable part of my workflow. Every document I have goes through my ScanSnap into Evernote before heading into the recycling bin.

Setting up your ScanSnap

Right click on the ScanSnap manager icon in the task manager and select ‘SCAN Button Settings’ (make sure that the ‘Use Quick Menu’ is not checked)

In the ‘Applications’ tab, click ‘Add or Remove’, then click ‘Add’ in the next pop-up window

Add Evernote by clicking the ‘Browse’ button and navigating to Evernote.exe (in most cases it is in C:\Program Files\Evernote\)

Type ‘Evernote’ for the Application Name and click OK. Be sure to select ‘Evernote’ in the application drop down menu.

In the ‘File Option’ tab, select PDF as the format and check the ‘Searchable PDF’ option (if available). Click OK.

Now, left-click on the ScanSnap Manager icon – you should see Evernote as the selected destination – if this is the case – you are all set up. From now on, whenever you scan a document, it will go into Evernote.

You can also use the Fujitsu ScanSnap with Evernote on your Mac. Steps are almost identical and DocumentSnap has a great blog post explaining how to set that up.

Scanning Handwritten Notes

The Fujitsu Scansnap does a great job OCR’ing printed text, but it does not handle handwritten text. Evernote can help. If you are scanning pages of handwritten notes, our image recognition can make them searchable. To take advantage of this, set up a second profile in the ScanSnap manager to scan your documents as JPEG images, instead of PDFs. Use this profile when you want to archive your notebooks and scribbles.

Using other Windows scanners with Evernote

The instructions vary greatly depending on the scanner and the scanning software you might be using, but there are a couple of general tips that should help you set up your Windows scanner to send to Evernote:

Find your scanner settings (located in the Control Panel, or a stand-alone program)

Look for a way to configure the hardware buttons on the scanner

Set a button to launch Evernote, by pointing it to the Evernote.exe (in most cases it is in C:\Program Files\Evernote\)

Save the settings and try it.

Evernote knows what to do with files sent to it from a scanner, such as images or PDFs. If Evernote is not running, it will launch and create a new note from the received file.

ritePen + Evernote

ritePen turns your entire screen into a canvas, so your writing is never constrained. You can jot notes, grab and annotate screen content, even launch applications, all without ever reaching for a mouse. The best part is how well it works with Evernote.

Feature: Handwriting recognition

There seems to be an inverse relationship between time spent at a computer and clarity of my handwriting. Luckily, ritePen can deal with whatever you throw at it. Whether you have your third grade teacher’s perfect penmanship or something more akin to a monkey doctor (either interpretation), ritePen will recognize it and place the text right where you need it regardless of where on the screen you write.

Feature: Annotation

See something interesting on the web? Quickly annotate what you like using ritePen’s markup tool, then click the Send to Evernote button to send the image directly into Evernote on your desktop. Since ritePen is designed to be an extension of natural handwriting, you won’t find any bounding boxes or region selection options. Instead, ritePen automatically creates an invisible box around the area that you annotate, so you get only what you want. If you want to capture a larger area, simply draw four dots around the area you wish to capture and ritePen does the rest.

Feature: Macros

ritePen allows you to assign handwritten shortcuts, which perform predefined actions. For example, you can assign a circled “w” to launch Wikipedia or have a circled “en” open up a blank note in Evernote. Does it get any simpler than that?

Feature: Smart Navigation

When you’re working with a pen computer, nothing breaks your productive groove faster than having to switch your brain from “now I’m writing some text” to “now I’m navigating around the system.” With ritePen, you don’t have to think about it. When you move your pen in ritePen, it automagically figures out whether you meant to write text, grab a scrollbar, click a button, resize a window, or fire off a macro. Pen navigation becomes almost invisible, and you can concentrate on the work at hand!

Get 40% OFF

For a limited time, Evernote users get ritePen Pro 3.1 for 40% OFF the regular price. Hurry, this offer won’t last.
You see that pile of business cards in front of you (I know they’re there)? What about that wallet full of receipts weighing down your pocket? Imagine all of those pieces of paper digitized, searchable, and available in Evernote without you ever touching a scanner. Magic? Maybe a little.

Shoeboxed and Evernote

Shoeboxed is a service that will scan all your business cards and receipts. You just stuff all that paper into an envelope and mail it to Shoeboxed. Some accounts even get a special blue Shoeboxed envelope that come postage-paid and pre-addressed, to get rid of even that small burden. Think of it as Netflix for your papers.

Once Shoeboxed receives your stuff, they scan everything and make it available online. Now for the really cool part, you can send any of that content from Shoeboxed into Evernote, where those business cards, receipts, and any handwritten scribbles become searchable. All you need is your Evernote email address, which you can find in the settings page of you Evernote Web account.

Great together

There are tons of great ways to use the two services together. Here are a few ideas:

Dreading tax season? Use Shoeboxed to scan your receipts, then organize them in Evernote. If you’re an Evernote Premium user, you can even keep your tax software’s export files in Evernote, so that you can access them at any time.

Just got back from a long business trip? Instead of having your business cards in one place, receipts in another, and meeting notes somewhere else, now everything can be saved and organized in Evernote. All searchable and available whenever you need.

Taking a home inventory? Send all your purchase receipts to Shoeboxed and import them into Evernote. Take snapshots of the things you own using your digital camera and add those to Evernote. Finally, take notes on the condition of your belongings directly in Evernote. Voila, a perfectly organized inventory for your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance

Get $10 OFF

Don’t forget, as with anything in Evernote, all of your scanned receipts and business cards are accessible and searchable on Windows, Mac, Web, iPhone, Windows Mobile and lots of other devices.

Does this sound familiar: you dropped a few hundred bucks on a new digital camera and you’re using it once a month to snap photos of vacations, friends, and family. It sure sounds familiar to me, because that’s how I use my camera: rarely. That’s all about to change.

Evernote and Eye-Fi have teamed up and the results are, well, amazing. It’s now dead simple to get photos into Evernote. You’re about to get much, much more out of your digital camera.

What’s Eye-Fi?

Eye-Fi makes Wi-Fi-enabled SD memory cards, which are compatible with the vast majority of digital cameras on the market. You put the Eye-Fi Card into your camera, go through a quick setup process, and any photo you take will be wirelessly sent into your Evernote account. No cables. No docks. Just magic.

This changes everything

Think about it, you own a device (camera) that takes high-quality photos incredibly well, and you use a service (Evernote) that’s really good at recognizing text in your photos and organizing your memories. Now with Eye-Fi, your, formerly, once-a-month camera becomes an essential tool to capture all sorts of day-to-day things. Here are some ideas:

Got back from a conference with a stack of business cards? Snap a photo of them.

Just finished a big whiteboard session? Don’t copy it into your notebook, snap a photo.

Just had dinner? Snap a photo of the receipt for your records.

Doing some comparison shopping? Go to a store and snap a photo of the sales tags.

Got a billion dollar idea sketched on a napkin? Snap a photo so you’ll never forget it.

Then, as soon as you come into range of an open wireless access point, or one that you’ve configured, the Eye-Fi card will send those photos into Evernote, where they’ll be processed, indexed, and made searchable and available on every platform and device you use. That’s pretty sweet.

Get an Eye-Fi card now. They make awesome gifts, too. Be sure to choose the Share, Anniversary, or Explore cards —these come with the web sharing feature.

Geo-location

Some Eye-Fi Cards also capture your location when you snap a photo. Once in Evernote, photos with geographic information can be easily mapped. This way, you’ll remember the “where” in addition to the “what.”

A great reason to go Premium

Today’s cameras are amazingly good. The pictures they produce are sharp, vibrant, and full of data, but they’re also quite large. By upgrading to Evernote Premium you’ll get tons of storage for all those snapshots, plus you’ll get priority image recognition, so your photos will be recognized super fast. Upgrade now.

We recently launched the Evernote API, which allows third party developers to integrate Evernote functionality into their applications and services. In this series, we will highlight some of the most exciting integrations.

What’s Tarpipe

Tarpipe simplifies the process of adding, sharing, and moving content among the web services you use, by allowing you to define a repeatable, automatic workflow. The Tarpipe/Evernote integration allows you to add content into your Evernote account, as well as automatically extract content, such as recognition data and URLs to public notes, which can then be shared with other supported services.

Example workflow: Searchable Twitter archive in Evernote

For example, you can create a workflow, in which an email subject becomes a Twitter message, that is then automatically sent into Evernote to create an archive of your tweets. Here’s a screenshot of what that workflow looks like in Tarpipe.

Getting started

Using Tarpipe is relatively simple, and surprisingly fun.

Create an account, then start a new a workflow.

Decide how content will enter the workflow, either via email or a Mac desktop app called Dropipe. If you will be emailing, select “Mail drop box” from the receptor drop down and choose MailDecoder from the Connector list. If you will be using the Dropipe app, select REST API from the receptor drop down and choose RestDecoder from the Connector list.

Select all the web services that you want your content to go to, and connect them to one another however you like. When you’re finished, hit Save.

Now, email content to the generated email address, or use Dropipe.

The video below, narrated by Tarpipe’s Bruno Pedro, shows the creation and execution of a workflow that starts with Bruno dropping a screenshot onto the desktop application, and ends with the content in Evernote; Flickr, with tags populated with Evernote’s recognition data; and Twitter, with a link back to Flickr. To make all that happen, all Bruno did was drop an image onto the Dropipe app.

Why this is cool

Tarpipe has created a very user friendly way to interact with Evernote, and other web services, on a level that’s usually reserved for programmers. For the less technical among us, like myself, it feels somewhat empowering to customize how data is published across the web. As a bonus, it adds new ways to add and share Evernote content. We like that.

We recently launched the Evernote API, which allows third party developers to integrate Evernote functionality into their applications and services. In this series, we will highlight some of the most exciting integrations.

Pelotonics, in their own words

Pelotonics unifies your team online to get things done. Organize your projects, collaborate with your group, and succeed in meeting your goals.

Pelotonics + Evernote API

Pelotonics is a project management and collaboration service, which allows organizations to easily manage multiple projects and tasks among groups of users. What Pelotonics needed was a powerful information capture tool. They found that in Evernote, thanks to the Evernote API.

Here’s a video conversation between Phil Libin (our CEO) and Troy Malone of Pelotonics.

Troy Malone and Phil Libin discuss the Integration.

Why this is cool

If you’re like us, then you spend a lot of time thinking about work (in a good way). It often feels like inspiration has a tendency to strike at random times, and the key is to capture it and make it actionable. The combination of Evernote’s multiplatform data capture, and Pelotonics’ project management, make going from inspiration to action a snap.

Thanks to the integration, users can now link Pelotonics to Evernote and easily bring notes into their Pelotonics account. Once a note is in Pelotonics, it can be assigned to a user or project, set as a task, attached to a message, or saved as a file. Instructions on linking the accounts are available on the Pelotonics FAQ page.

Since this is a server-side integration, user can take full advantage of all the functionality Evernote offers. Create a note using the desktop, web, or mobile versions of Evernote, sync, and have it instantly appear in Pelotonics. The video below shows Troy using the integration.

When it comes to snapping photos with your phone, the fewer clicks the better. Well, wouldn’t it be great if you could snap a photo and have it automatically go into your Evernote account? No emailing. Just snap and you’re done. Well, you can and here’s how.

Those of you out there with Windows Mobile phones have it pretty good, since Evernote for Windows Mobile will automatically send snapshots and audio right into your account.

But, since many of you don’t have Windows Mobile phones we thought you might want to give ShoZu a shot. ShoZu is an application that can be set to automatically send snapshots to your Evernote email address as soon as you snap the photo, and ShoZu works with a ton of different phones.

This video shows how ShoZu and Evernote work together.

Get ShoZu

Go to www.ShoZu.com, and click on Get ShoZu

Find your phone in the list of supported phones

Create an account and follow the installation instructions

Once installed, select Send to Email and configure ShoZu to send to your Evernote email address

Select Evernote and go to the Sending setting menu and set it to “Auto Send”

That’s it. Now, go snapshot crazy.

If you have any questions, check out the ShoZu support site.
