Join Phil Libin (CEO, Evernote), Roelof Botha (Sequoia Capital) and Gary Little (Morgenthaler Ventures) for a conversation with Wade Roush of Xconomy about what it means to build a 100-year company.
In a valley where the latest tech fads rule and venture funds often last a decade or less, how do you even begin to think about making your startup last into the 22nd century?
Ever wish you could grab an Evernote Support Tech to ask a quick question? Maybe you’d prefer to chat with someone in real-time rather than submit a Support ticket. Now, you can. Premium users can now chat live with Evernote Support Techs who will help identify and answer your questions and issues.
Our new Support chat feature assists users with basic issues like account maintenance, Evernote how-tos, username changes, bug reports, etc. If a Support member can’t immediately help you with your issue, he/she will gather all of the information needed for a specialist to assist you with your ticket.
Let’s Chat
Initiating chat is easy. Navigate to the Evernote Support page, and select “Chat with Evernote.” From there, you’ll be able to sign into your Evernote account. You’ll be prompted to provide some additional information (see screenshot, above) and then, you’ll be connected to an Evernote Support Tech.
At this time, chat is only available in English, Monday-Friday, from 9:00am-5:00pm PST. We’ll be expanding both our hours and supported languages soon.
We’re excited to offer this new service to our Premium users and are eager to hear your thoughts.

When we built our learning app, Evernote Peek, our goal was to help you study for a test or brush up on your language skills. The ingenious folks at VisitEurope have come up with a whole new reason to use Peek: you could win a trip to Berlin!
How to enter
Install Peek on your iPad (now it even works without a Smart Cover). Get all the notebooks created by VisitEurope and start studying. Next, go to the VisitEurope site and take their Peek-inspired quiz.
One lucky entrant will win a 4-day trip to Berlin, Germany furnished by Monograms. Make sure to read the rules on the VisitEurope site before entering.
Siri, the iPhone 4S digital assistant, does so many useful things; it helps you find the nearest pizza joint, reminds you to buy bread and even quotes 2001: A Space Odyssey. Did you know that you can also use Siri to dictate notes into your Evernote account? It’s true, and best of all, you probably already have it configured.
The set up is very straightforward. First, make Evernote a contact in your address book with your incoming Evernote email address. You can add the email by going into Evernote > Settings > Evernote email address.
Launch Siri and say “Send email to Evernote.” Next, dictate your email and send it off. The message will show up in your default notebook. Even cooler, you can say “Send email to Evernote. Make apple pie for family reunion,” and Siri will send that note into your account.
It’s the hands-free way to create notes. Perfect for when you’re driving, jogging or just not in the typing mood.

Life has enough complicated rules to keep track of, so we like to simplify wherever we can. In that spirit, we’re happy to say that we’ve just simplified how file attachments work for Free users. As many of you know, Free users had been previously limited to putting only text, image, audio and PDF files into their notes. That restriction is now gone, so both Free and Premium users can attach any type of file to a note. Easy Peasy.
Watch Your Head
The reason we lifted our file restriction is that we want to allow our users to store everything related to an experience or memory in a single, visual, searchable place. However, please keep in mind that the note size and monthly upload restrictions haven’t changed:
Free users can make a single note up to 25MB in size and can upload up to 60MBs of new stuff every month.
Premium users can make a single note up to 50MB in size and can upload up to 1GB of new stuff every month.
Adding files to Evernote
Now is probably a good time to refresh your memory on how to put files into Evernote. Virtually every version of Evernote supports adding files.
Desktop and Web
Mac: Drag a file into a note or onto the Evernote dock icon or use the File -> Attach File menu option.
Windows: Drag a file in a note or right click in a note and choose the File option.
Evernote Web: Edit a note, then drag a file onto the note header or click the paperclip icon.
Mobile
iOS: When viewing a file, tap the Share icon in the top right, then tap Open with…Evernote.
Android: When editing a note, tap the paper clip and choose File.
BlackBerry: From the home screen, tap on the Upload file option.
WebOS: Select File from the New Note screen.
We’re excited about this change because it will let more of you get more out of Evernote. We have lots of new features in the works, including some exciting ones for Premium users. Check out our Evernote Premium page to learn about all the great reason to go Premium.
[Update: Come out to the grand opening of our Austin Studio on Nov. 17th. RSVP here »]
I don’t want to jinx anything by saying this, but it really feels like we’re hitting our stride at Evernote and it’s time to take another big step: We’re coming to Austin, Texas. Starting immediately, we’re hiring the best developers, designers, QA engineers, and product managers to create our first Evernote Studio.
When we say “studio,” we don’t just mean, “satellite office.” We mean a creative, autonomous team to build some of our most exciting new products. Our goal is to get about a dozen people by the end of the year and to keep on growing as fast as we can after that.
Why Austin? Because it’s awesome there. Several of us early Evernoters actually spent a lot of time in Austin when our first company was bought by Vignette in 2000. While there, I fell in love with the local food, music, food, culture, and food. Most of all, I really love the attitude of the Austin tech community. They just know how to build. In some ways, It’s very similar to the tech vibe around San Francisco and Silicon Valley, and in some ways it’s the exact opposite. It’s hard to explain, but I figured if we had a big presence in both places, it would come out great.
[This event has passed.] We’ll be having a little meet-up / party at the Austin W this Wednesday from 7-10pm. I’ll be there with a few other Evernote folks, so come say hi.
Of course, we’re still hiring like mad at our offices in Mountain View and Tokyo, so if you know a hyper-talented someone who wants to help us build the world’s trusted memory, send them on over.
Phew. Well, we survived our very first conference. We weren’t sure what we were getting into when we announced ETC (the Evernote Trunk Conference) and we were thrilled with the results. People came — and lots of them (over 400, in fact). Evernote users, fans, developers, and partners filled Terra SF, a beautiful 3-story space in San Francisco for our all-day event.
Big announcements and informative sessions
We kicked things off with the announcement of our Skitch acquisition (you can now get it in the App Store for free, and download it to your Android device). Clearly, people love Skitch as much as we do; it was a trending topic on Twitter shortly after the announcement.
The day was filled with presentations from notable individuals, like Tim Ferriss and Gordon Bell, exciting users, including Michael Hyatt and Carley Knobloch, and the finalists from our Developer Competition. We talked about Evernote architecture with our CTO, discussed ways to create a killer app, and the decisions that help companies reach the next level of growth.
The Developer Competition
The event also marked the launch of our first developer competition. Nearly 1,000 developers participated, and from their submissions three winners were chosen: the Grand Prize, Student Prize and Wildcard Prize ($50,000, $10,000, $10,000, respectively). Each of the six Grand Prize finalists presented their apps to the ETC crowd and a global audience via UStream. Viewers’ votes were combined with community and judge votes to select the Grand Prize winner. You can read about each of the amazing finalists here. Congrats to all of them!
$50,000 Grand Prize Winner: Touchanote Developer: Wiseleap Solutions, Montreal, Canada
Touchanote is an Android app that lets you associate real life objects with your Evernote notes. Assign your Evernote notes to NFC tags — the contactless technology that has made the mobile wallet possible. Open the note by simply touching the tag with an NFC-enabled mobile phone. Remind yourself of your to-do list at your desk, put tags on all your devices and associate with notes containing serial numbers and manuals, or attach an NFC sticker to your luggage tag associated with a checklist note in Evernote.
$10,000 Wildcard Winner: Read-along Bookvids Developer: Arlo Faria, Berkeley, California
Read-along bookvids is an app that lets you automatically turn a static book into an animated video in which pages turn in-sync with narration. Just take photos of pages inside a book and record yourself reading along. That’s all. Place all of the notes into a notebook and enjoy a whole new way to ‘read’ a book. Using Evernote’s image recognition, combined with Read-along’s speech recognition technology, Read-along Bookvids is able to detect when to turn the page. When your voice reaches the end of the page, the app automatically flips to the next page.
$10,000 Student Prize Winner: Desk in the Clouds Developer: Bernhard Caspar, University of Applied Sciences, Berlin, Germany
Desk in the Clouds is a web and Mac app that lets you create a personalized, curated view of the notes you care about most. Drag notes from your Evernote account to a virtual desk, where you can change their position and order. It’s like creating a mood board of your Evernote content. Once notes are on your ‘desk,’ you can modify them and even create multiple desks by adding tags to notes (ie: ‘Business’ or ‘Cooking’). Any modifications you make will automatically be saved and restored when you visit the site. To start using Desk in the Clouds, simply log in with your Evernote account.
Time to Party!
We ended the night with a fun party and an exciting lineup of users who wowed the audience with their awesome presentations. Food was provided by some delicious food trucks and local vendors (including Delica, El Tonayense, RoliRoti, and Marge Bakery), and there were plenty of drinks to fuel the night. We think it’s fair to say we’re blown away by the experience.
Thanks again to all of our incredible speakers and attendees. And thank you to our community, for getting involved in many different ways throughout the event — you truly made it a special day…time to start planning ETC 2012!
Did you attend ETC? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
We love Skitch so much that we decided to buy the company. Skitch is an amazing Mac application that’s changed the way people capture, annotate and share images. Chief Skitchers, Cris Pearson and Keith Lang are moving from Australia and joining Evernote to lead a significantly expanded Skitch team focused on supercharging the product.
The Evernote Story
Our journey at Evernote has been an exciting one. In 2007, two teams came together to develop a new type of product, a service that would help the world remember everything. In 2008, that vision turned into the Evernote you know today. Now, 14 platforms and 12 million users later, we’re taking the first steps in the next phase of our company: new applications.
Why Skitch?
We were drawn to Skitch (har har) for one simple reason: we love and use their product with Evernote. For years, one of our most requested feature areas has been related to improved handling of images and annotation capabilities. Our users take and share millions of photos and screenshots already, but the experience isn’t as good as it could be. We debated about whether to add the improved functionality into Evernote or build a separate app to handle it. Finally, we decided to do both. Thanks to Skitch, we will.
Skitch will make Evernote better (and vice versa)
As Skitch users will attest, this is one of the most innovative, easy-to-use applications available on Mac. We’re going to keep it that way. We are committed, not only to making the Skitch Mac app more awesome, but also to bringing Skitch to every desktop and mobile platform under the sun. In addition, in the coming months, you’ll see tighter integration between Evernote and Skitch to let you easily draw, ink, grab screenshots, annotate and share your favorite memories.
We gain more than just an app; you don’t build one of the top Mac applications without having some great ideas, which is why we’re also looking forward to the Skitch team’s input on Evernote. You’ll be seeing their influence in many aspects of all our products.
What’s changing?
Everything you currently love about Skitch will stay the same and we’ll be quickly introducing a lot of new, exciting stuff.
The full version of Skitch, which used to be $19.95 in the Mac App Store, is now completely FREE! There are no more trial versions, because you don’t need them. No more ads and no more restrictions, either.
New users can sign into Skitch with their Evernote credentials. Existing Skitch users can continue to use their Skitch.com accounts.
Using Skitch with Evernote today
Using Evernote and Skitch together today is easy. Drag images from Evernote into Skitch for Mac, annotate and edit them, then use the “Drag Me” feature in Skitch to bring it back into Evernote. Or, simply take screenshots in Skitch and drag them into Evernote. Our goal is to make this experience much more streamlined.
Much More to Come
Our goal is to make Skitch a household name with everyone that wants to draw, sketch, annotate, doodle, sign or highlight something. That happens to be everyone. Our engineers are working on tying the two services together. We’re combining our years of experience with inking, handwriting recognition and pen input with the fantastic capabilities of Skitch.
This is a pretty great way to make sure that the elegant screen-capture app we fell in love with all those years ago finally gets the resources it deserves.
Please join us in welcoming team Skitch into the Evernote family!
The Evernote Trunk Conference is less than two weeks away. We’ve put together an agenda full of business, developer and user-focused sessions; great guests and interesting speakers. Attendees will also get the inside scoop on major new Evernote initiatives.
If you can’t make it to our daytime conference, consider coming out to our fun evening events. From 6 to 8, we’ll have half-hour user sessions led by individuals that have made Evernote a key part of their daily lives, including Michael Hyatt, Carley Knobloch, Brett Kelly, and Kyle Koch.
Then, from 8 until 10:30 we’ll have an afterparty in the same location to unwind after the day’s activities.
Tickets
There are two ticket options:
Full day ticket: This gets you into all sessions and the evening party
ETC @ Night: This ticket gets you into ETC for all events after 6pm
