Drag and drop

With this release, you can drag files onto the Evernote application icon to create new notes. Free users can drag images, audio and PDFs. Evernote Premium users can drop any file including Word docs and PowerPoint presentations. If you use a scanner with Evernote, set the scan destination to be Evernote.exe, and those scans will become notes automatically.

Pop-up control

If you’re like me, then you like seeing those informational sync and clip pop-up messages. Some of you…well…you hate them. Now you get to choose. Keep them on, or turn them off. It’s your call. Just go to Tools > Options > Synchronization to change the setting.

Tons of other improvements

Significantly improved performance when switching between notebooks

New global hot-key for searching Evernote (defaults to SHIFT+Windows+F)

Improved search support for Asian characters

Addressed PDF search issues

Improved auto-import dialogs

Improved copy/paste support

Incorporated more standard keyboard short-cuts

More configuration preferences preserved

Improved task tray with easier access to clipping and short-cuts

Known problems

Graphics and text can appear blurry in some monitor configurations

Firefox clipper is currently not supported

To everyone that has tried the Beta. Thanks. Your feedback is helping us build a better Evernote.

Today, we released an update to Evernote for Mac (version 1.5). The latest release adds some much-requested features and improvements. Here are some of the notable changes:

Download the latest Evernote for Mac now »

The Beta track

For the more adventurous souls among you, we now offer the option to join our Beta release track. By checking the box in Evernote preferences, you’ll get an update whenever we put out a beta release. Although this does mean that you’ll get access to more frequent updates and new features before the rest of the Evernote-using population, it also means that you’ll be trying a less stable build. This isn’t meant to be for everyone, but if you do try it you’ll be helping us improve Evernote. Thanks.

More languages

Our translation project is beginning to bear fruit. If your Mac is set to French, German, Italian, or Spanish, the Evernote interface will now show up in that language. The process of improving the text recognition is still ongoing. In fact, you can help us by submitting a handwriting sample here.

Safari toolbar

We recently learned that our Safari clipper was acting in ways unbefitting a friendly elephant–causing other toolbar items to disappear (1Password) or disappearing itself. In this update, we hope to have fixed the problem, though we’ve heard reports that some issues remain. We’ll keep at it.

And the rest…

New features

Added support for viewing of digital ink notes.

Improved searching for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters.

User’s Evernote email address added to the Account Info window.

Bug fixes

Improved support for importing large ENEX files.

Fixed an issue which caused a pink error message to occasionally appear.

Fixed an issue which resulted in a blank note appearing when merging notes.

Fixed an issue related to searching for notes with words surrounded by punctuation.

We have a big announcement to make…the new Evernote for Windows is here, kinda.

Windows has always been a big deal for Evernote. Fully 46% of our desktop users log into their Evernote accounts through our downloadable Windows version, compared with 38% on Mac and 16% on the web. However, over the past few months our Windows users may have felt a little left out, especially given all the rapid development on our other platforms.

It was all part of our cunning plan… Deep inside our secret lair, we’ve been discreetly (errr not so discreetly) working on a complete, from-the-ground-up rewrite of Evernote for Windows. The goal: make it faster, sleeker, more powerful, and—most importantly—easier to enhance in the future. Now, you can see the results in the brand new Evernote for Windows 3.5 Beta. We think it’s pretty neat. Get Evernote 3.5 Beta »

What’s new?

Evernote for Windows 3.5 has dozens of visible and under-the-hood improvements. In a nutshell, you’ll be able to capture stuff faster, find it easier, store more of it, and manipulate it in more powerful ways. It’s also quite handsome. Here are some of the changes:

Three different ways to view your notes

Thumbnail view: Rendered thumbnails showing the contents of your notes, images, and PDFs for easy browsing and filtering

List view: Multi-column “List View” with sorting on any column

Mixed view: Mixed thumbnail + detail view

Can zoom thumbnails to see more detail

Can display thumbnail or mixed views in visual groupings by date, size, source URL domain, and start of title

Note editing

Auto-complete tagging and easier tag creation

Spell checking as you type

Better support for advanced markup

Can now create tables within notes

Can specify default font size for text in notes

Better handling of longer text notes

Creating ink notes in easier with the new canvas-like layout

More functions available in single-note editor window

Detailed note information and attributes

Emailing notes

Printing notes

Editable description of the search filter

Ability to add or remove individual criteria from current search filter

Save the current search for use later as a Saved Search

And so much more…

Find and Find next/find previous (both within and across notes)

Better consistency across the Mac and Windows versions of Evernote

New icons and buttons

More user-friendly “Folder Import” feature to automatically create notes from a watched folder–great for scanner and other integrations

“View on Map” button opens geo-tagged notes in Google Maps

Evernote for Windows introduction video included on launch

Multi-lingual spell check included in application

Quick access to your online account information

Improved screen clipping requiring fewer steps, with on-screen explanations

Menu options for attaching files to notes without requiring drag-and-drop

Extend note search capabilities with ANY or ALL search criteria

Remove tags from notes with a single click

Advanced note text editor based on Google Chrome

Improved synchronization performance via networking optimizations

Improved database performance for faster searching and sorting of notes

Single binary for all supported languages

Why is it in Beta?

We see Evernote 3.5 as a big (BIG) improvement in terms of features, performance and stability, but it’s such a big change that we want people to use it for a couple of months before it becomes the official version. This means that we won’t be auto-upgrading current users just yet. If you’re new to Evernote for Windows, by all means download and start using the 3.5 Beta. If you’re an existing user of 3.1, you’ll have to follow a few simple steps to migrate to 3.5:

Export any local notebooks

Completely quit Evernote 3.1 (including the taskbar clipper)

Install Evernote 3.5 Beta

Allow Evernote to sync your notes from the server (this make take some time)

Import the local notebooks

Once Evernote 3.5 is ready for primetime, we will allow everyone to automatically upgrade to it. In the meantime, you can use both on the same machine or just keep using 3.1.

Which versions of Windows?

The Evernote 3.5 beta uses the latest Microsoft development frameworks so it runs great on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. If you’re running Windows XP, particularly on a fairly old computer, you may notice some graphical glitches. We’re working to fix these problems, but if the 3.5 Beta doesn’t work well on your configuration, you should switch back to 3.1.

What’s next?

Now that we’ve made the investment in modernizing the Evernote for Windows codebase, we’ll be able to release future enhancement much more rapidly. Look for lots of exciting features in the near future.

Big, big thanks to the hundreds of people who participated in our alpha testing!

UPDATE We’ve put together a release candidate of the upcoming Evernote for Mac version 1.4.9, which should fix many of the Snow Leopard issues mentioned below. Please be aware that this is not the final release, so you may encounter bugs and other issues. We plan to release the final patch through our normal autoupdate system next week.

Release candidate installation

Quit Evernote (if you have it running)

Go to you Applications folder and drag Evernote into trash

Download and install the release candidate

We’re really excited about Apple’s Snow Leopard release (OS 10.6). It’ll help make future versions of both Evernote for Mac and Evernote for iPhone much more powerful. The current version of Evernote for Mac runs well on Snow Leopard, though we (and you) have identified some issues. We’re working on an update that will be out soon. In the meantime, here are some workarounds.

Safari Clipper

Problem: Safari Clipper doesn’t clip when running Safari in “64-bit mode”
Workaround : Switch your Safari to 32-bit mode by locating Safari.app in your Applications folder, select it, then right-click and choose Get Info (or use Cmd+I) to open the Information panel. Click the “Open in 32-bit mode” checkbox as shown in the screenshot below.

iSight Note

Problem: iSight Note doesn’t save the picture
Workaround: Take the photo using Photobooth and drag it into Evernote

Quick Look

Problem: Quick look for file attachments doesn’t display a preview
Workaround: Double click the file to launch it.

Firefox Clipper

Problem: If you have Evernote for Mac installed, the Firefox clipper sends clipped pages to the web first, instead of sending them to Evernote on your desktop.
Workaround: No workaround for this one. You are still clipping the page, it just goes to the web first. We’re working on a fix to bring back the old functionality.

We’re also investigating a few reports related to synchronization and Spotlight.

A fix will be available soon. In the interim, please use these workarounds.

Evernote for iPhone version 3.1 is out. In this release you’ll find huge speed improvements for searching and snapping, a bunch of new features, and some nice bug fixes. Get it while it’s hot (App Store). Here’s the feature rundown:

Snappier snapping

Things got a whole lot faster in the latest iPhone update. Creating both snapshot and camera roll notes is way way speedier than ever before. So get ready for less waiting and more snapping.

Clip web pages

Evernote has a built-in web browser, which allows you to quickly open links found within your notes. Now you can do more than just visit the webpages, you can also clip them into your account. To use this feature, tap the Clip to Evernote option found within the Send To menu at the bottom of the browser screen.

Email to Evernote

All Evernote users get their own special email address. Now, Evernote for iPhone makes it easy to add that address to your phone’s contacts. This may not seem like a big deal at first glance, but just think of all the useful stuff that comes through your email every single day. Wouldn’t it be great if you could easily capture that for later? Now you can. Just forward it to Evernote. This feature is found in the Evernote Account tab.

Note: Your Evernote email address is also available in the Settings section of Evernote Web

Sync on command

Evernote now lets you sync whenever you like. In the Account tab, tap Synchronize Now to have Evernote start sync’ing. Evernote will still auto-sync every so often, but sometimes you just can’t wait.

Bug fixes all around

In addition to the great new features, this release is full of bug fixes making for a smoother, more stable Evernote experience.

We’re just going to come out and say it: Evernote for Mac has had a history of doing funky stuff when you created text notes. There were issues with text sizes, font switching, double spacing, and a host of other small annoyances.

That’s now mostly in the past. Our latest release (version 1.4.8) fixes a number of these nagging issues.

Here’s a rundown of the text handling improvements:

Pasted plain text will match the style of the note and properly preserve spacing.

Hitting enter on a double-spaced line converts it to a single-spaced line.

Undo continues to function after a note is saved.

Plain text copies of a note now preserve lists and to-do checkboxes.

Pasting HTML from a web browser preserves newlines from text inside <pre> blocks.

Copying and pasting a list item within a note preserves list indenting.

Pasted rich-text font sizes are preserved when saving and syncing.

Cutting and pasting a line of text within a note properly preserves line endings.

Pasting multi-line text from an HTML <textarea> in Safari preserves newlines.

Improved handling of newlines when pasting rich-text.

Get the latest »

This is all part of our ongoing effort to make sure you have a great experience when using Evernote.

Google Reader now lets you send blog posts directly into Evernote. When you send a post to Evernote, we go out to the source page and clip the whole thing –that way you get everything, not just the bit that you see in Reader.

Why I love this feature

A lot of my web life can be broadly classified as research: recipes, drool-worthy gadgets, lifehacking ideas, articles to read, etc. Much of that stuff enter my consciousness through Google Reader. The usual workflow is something like–see an interesting post, go to the blog, clip it into Evernote for later, return to Reader. Now, I can do everything without leaving Reader. Awesome.

Super simple setup

Sign into Google Reader and click on the Settings link at the top of the page, then click on the “Send To” tab. Next, click “Create a Custom Link” and enter the following:

Name: Evernote

URL: http://s.evernote.com/grclip?url=${url}&title=${title}

Icon URL: http://www.evernote.com/favicon.ico

And you’re done!

What happens next

When you click your shiny new Send to Evernote button, a new tab will open asking you to sign into Evernote (if you haven’t done so recently), and to, optionally, select the destination notebook and add tags.

A little note

The results you will see are identical to clipping whole webpages using any of our web clippers, which means that you’ll get the content you want and some of the webpage element, too.

Ever since launch, our lab coat-wearing R&D team has been working those slide rules and protractors to improve Evernote’s search technology. We’re excited to unveil our new premium-only feature: PDF search.

What’s new?

There are two types of PDFs in the world: those that are searchable and those that aren’t. Most scanners produce PDFs that are essentially digitized images of a physical page. In the past, these PDFs would not appear in your search results. Starting now, Evernote will run these PDFs through our updated recognition servers, allowing our Premium subscribers to find them when they search.

In addition, our desktop versions will allow premium users to export the searchable PDFs by right clicking on them in the note.

What about old PDFs?

Over the next week, Evernote will process all existing premium user PDFs. Don’t worry, newly added PDFs will become searchable within minutes, though it may take a bit longer while our servers crunch through existing ones.

What if a PDF is already searchable?

If you already have searchable PDFs in your account, Evernote won’t touch them. This is true for all subscribers, free and premium.

What’s next?

The longer you use Evernote, the more critical our super-duper search technology becomes. Rest assured that we’re going to keep on improving it so you’ll never forget a thing.

Evernote Premium

There are lots of great reasons to go premium:

Create 500MB of new notes each month

Sync any type of file

Allow others to view and edit your notebooks

Get faster image recognition

And lots more. Check out all the benefits on our premium page.

In the past couple of weeks, we have released updates for the five major versions of Evernote. For the most part, these have been bug fix releases, which means that across the board Evernote is running more smoothly and reliably than ever. Here’s a rundown of releases and version numbers. Go on and get the latest and greatest, if you haven’t already.

Recently updated versions of Evernote

Evernote for Windows (version 3.1.0.1212 ) | get it »

Evernote for Mac (version 1.4.5) | get it »

Evernote for iPhone (version 3.0.2) | get it »

Evernote Web | check it out »

[UPDATE 7/23] Evernote for BlackBerry (version 3.0.245) | get it »

UPDATE: Content not valid error
If you are experiencing the “invalid content” error when you sync using Evernote for Mac version 1.5.0 on your Leopard ( OS 10.5) machine, then you should:

“Check for Updates” in your client to upgrade to version 1.5.1

Open the Mac “Console” application and look for the title of the note that is failing. You should see a line that looks like either:

11/1/09 4:50:54 PM Evernote[1029] exception adding note ‘Mexican Cooking’ to server

27.10.09 12:26:00 Evernote[16411] exception updating note ‘Mexican Cooking’ [guid: b931f161-7f61-4ac1-8ea6-c7df882d12bb] on server

Open the note with this title in Evernote and edit the contents of the note in some way. For example, you can add a space to the end of the note.

Sync

For the past year, we’ve had a single goal: becoming your second brain. We made it easy to capture and find all of your ideas and inspirations using (almost) all the devices you own. We’ve even been called “the anti-social app“, for our unconventional determination to focus on what’s on your mind, not just the mind of your friends. Ok, maybe we call ourselves that. Today, we’re broadening our view.

Now begins Phase 1 of our major effort to help you share (and collaborate on) the stuff you’ve collected with individuals, groups, and the world. Introducing, Evernote Shared Notebooks. [cue fanfare]

What’s new?

Using Evernote Web, you can now specify individuals that are permitted to view, and in some cases modify, your notebooks.

How it works

In your Evernote Web account, you will see a new, blue Sharing section in the navigation panel. Click on “sharing setup” to begin the process of sharing your notebooks. Select the notebook you wish to share, then decide whether to share that notebook with individuals or the world.

There are two additional options under the “Share with individuals” category:

Share with individuals (view only)

Share with individuals (view and modify) – Evernote Premium feature

For added security, you can require log in, which means that the unique link in the email your invitees receive can only be used by a single person and they’ll be asked to log in before seeing your notes.

Modify my notes (Evernote Premium only)

While all users get the ability to share their notebooks, Evernote Premium subscribers can also grant modification privileges: add, edit, and delete notes. You don’t need to be Premium in order to perform the modification, but you must be Premium in order to allow for modification of your notebooks. It’s important to note that any additions will affect the notebook owner’s monthly upload allowance. Learn more about Evernote Premium »

Linking notebooks into your account

We also made it really simple to keep track of any notebooks that have been shared with you. Whenever you visit someone’s shared notebook, you will see a “Link this to my account” button in the top right corner. Clicking that will add the notebook to your Evernote Web sharing section so you can jump back to the notebook any time you like. Try it now by linking this aspiring super villain’s notebook into your account.

New look

For those of you that published your notebooks in the past, you will see a new interface. The new look is closer to our standard web layout, and is much easier to scan and navigate. We also wanted to make sure that individuals unfamiliar with Evernote would get a consistent web experience throughout the application.

If this is Phase 1, what’s Phase 2?

You (our wonderful users) have been clamoring for selective sharing for some time. So, we decided to make it available in phases as we build out the functionality. Right now, most notebook sharing functions are only available through Evernote Web. Soon, you will be able to share right from your desktop or mobile Evernote. Like with everything else we do, sharing will be everywhere. Our developer API has already been updated to support the new sharing features, and we can’t wait to see what you all come up with.

If you want to join us on the first step of this ambitious journey, you can do three simple things: (1) Make some notebooks that you want to share, (2) invite your friends, (3) tell us how to make Evernote better.

Ever since Apple announced plans for the new iPhone 3.0 a couple of months ago, we’ve been hard at work rebuilding Evernote to take advantage of the platform’s new features. Today is the big payoff: iPhone 3.0 officially launches and our new app is ready to go! Get it now from the App Store.

This is a major upgrade for us. There are two main reasons to be excited about Evernote for iPhone 3.0: the great stuff that we put in, and the even greater stuff that we’ll be able to add in the near future. So, what’s new?

Beefy synchronization

We’ve completely rewritten the data synchronization part of the application to take advantage of the new iPhone 3.0 capabilities, so that info about all your notes (but not their entire contents) is now synced locally on the device. This means that you can scroll through thousands of notes without interruption and without ever seeing the dreaded “load 25 more” message. It also means that filtering on tags, attributes, notebooks and locations can now be done without ever hitting the server, so it’s virtually instantaneous. Also, note content is now cached more aggressively, so pulling up a previously-viewed note is very quick. If you have a lot of notes, Evernote may need a couple of minutes to sync your note list the first time you launch the new app.

No pending

This new data handling functionality also means that there’s no longer any need for a “Pending” tab —pending notes are now displayed in the normal note list and you can edit them at any time, even before they’ve been synced!

Where in the world?

We love maps, and Evernote 3.0 for the iPhone’s got em! You can push the “pin” button at any time to see all of your notes displayed on a map. The numbers indicate how many notes you have in a particular area, and zooming in will break up the groups until you can see each individual note as a pin. Now, if you want to quickly remember the name of that great pickled mustard herring you had in Stockholm last summer (mmmm), just thumb the map over to Sweden and there it is.

Instant groups

The note views now lets you group your notes by date, title, notebook, city or country. You can also instantly jump to a different group by taping the index bar on the right of the note list (or on the bottom, if you’re in landscape mode), or scroll your finger over the index bar to fly through your notes at breakneck speed. Once you get good at using groups, maps and index-jumping, you can quickly get to any note without ever having to search.

Advanced Searching

Of course, you can still search through your notes and we’ve made that better as well. Advanced search options are now easier to use and many types of searches can be performed without ever having to touch the server, so they’re really fast. You can also instantly jump back to seeing all your notes at any time.

Way better audio

We’ve given the audio recorder in Evernote a lot of attention and now it’s much better than before. We doubled the recording time, halved the number of required button presses, and dressed it up in a spiffy new skin. If you haven’t tried making voice notes in Evernote before, give the new audio recorder a shot. It’s so slick now that we can’t stop playing with it…

Cinema-quality Landscape View

Try holding the phone sideways in the note list view. Now add a few thousand notes and try it again. It’s a drool-worthy visual timeline of your notable life.

Mercy for your fingers

We’ve eliminated several steps and small buttons when making snapshot and camera roll notes. Now you can snap a picture and send it to Evernote with just a couple of clicks. If you want to add a title, tags or text to your photo (or any other) note, just pull it up from the note list —even if it’s still pending.

Plays nice with others

Evernote for iPhone 3.0 now supports in-app integrations with iPhone apps from other developers. Several exciting Evernote-aware apps should be launching really really soon! Stay tuned and we’ll blog about all of them.

General improvements and bug fixes

This is our third major version of Evernote for the iPhone, so there’s a lot of improvements under the hood.

More on the horizon

Just as important as the new features that made it in to this release, is the fact that Evernote 3.0 for iPhone is the most powerful mobile platform we’ve ever built and it’s going to let us do things in the future which we couldn’t even dream if doing before. So what are we dreaming about now? Well, we don’t want to make specific promises (and some of them may be a long way away), so we’ll just hint at three things for now: sharing, local search, calendar integration, to-do management, audio search, compass use and memory training. Wait, that’s seven things. Dammit! Suffice it to say there will be lots of amazingly cool features coming soon.

Works on all iPhones and iPod Touches

Upgrade your existing iPhone or iPod Touch to the 3.0 firmware, and you’ll be all set to run the new Evernote. Of course, if you’re lucky enough to get the new iPhone 3G S, you’ll notice that, thanks to the fantastic new camera and faster speed, it’s pretty much the perfect Evernote device.

As always, Evernote 3.0 for the iPhone is available for free from the App Store. Remember that your Evernote app is happiest when it gets to sync across all of your computers and mobile devices, so if you haven’t already done so, make sure to download us for Mac and Windows as well!

It may still say version 2.0 in iTunes, while all the Apple servers update.

Evernote for Palm® Pre™ is here. It’s the newest addition to our rapidly growing family of remember-everythingamajigs. Get it now from the Palm App Catalog. Visit our Palm Pre webpage for screenshots and additional information.

What does it do?

Evernote for Palm Pre lets you capture your experiences and inspirations instantly as they occur, and then find them whenever you want. It allows you to create text and snapshot notes on the go, edit existing text notes, and search through all of your memories, even those created on your desktop or the web. Evernote for Palm Pre also lets you open and view multiple notes at once, launching a new “card” for each.

Don’t forget to try our image recognition. Take a photo of something containing printed or handwritten text, send it into your Evernote account, give it a minute to process, then try searching for the text. This is great for whiteboards, business cards, wine labels, signs, scribbles, and more.

Mmmm…thumbnails

You can easily toggle between two view options. One gives you thumbnails along with some meta-information (title, date), while the other shows a wall of note thumbnails —perfect for quick browsing.

Now, where was I?

Evernote takes full advantage of the Palm Pre location awareness capabilities. Whenever you create a new text note, Evernote captures your location and associates that with your note. Later you can search for notes created within 5 miles of where you’re standing. So, say you’re visiting headquarter and want to find the notes your took on your Palm Pre the last time you were there. All you need to do is launch Evernote, tap the Search button, and tap Search Nearby. Voilà.

More to come

The Palm Pre is a brand new platform, so we’re just learning the ropes. You can look forward to more great features and functionality in the not-too-distant future.

Evernote for Mac got a nice update today adding a new export option and a bunch of great usability enhancements. Check for updates or download the latest

Quick Look attachments

You can now view attachments from within Evernote using the handy Quick Look feature. Simply click on the Quick Look button in the attachment box or use the CMD+Y keyboard shortcut. This also works the other way; you can now Quick Look your Evernote notes in Finder or Spotlight.

Don’t forget, upgrading to Evernote Premium lets to you attach any type of file to your notes. Learn more on our Evernote Premium page.

HTML export

Data portability is very important to us. We believe that you should feel comfortable putting your data into Evernote with the knowledge that, if you want, you can always take it out. In addition to our XML export, we’ve added the ability to export notes as HTML. To do this, select the note(s) you wish to export, click Export in the File menu, then choose HTML as the export format. All of your meta-information (tags, source URLs, etc) is preserved in the HTML source code.

All notes button

This new button lets you instantly clear out any searches and filters that you may have and resets the view to All Notebooks. You can access this feature either by clicking the button or using the CMD+R keyboard shortcut. Why didn’t we put this handy button into the Mac client before now? We have no idea.

Other great improvements

‘Save As’ now works for audio files contained within notes

Improved and simplified menus – we’ve scrubbed every menu with a fine-toothed-mixed-metaphor-comb to make them all consistent

Numerous bug fixes throughout

I’m delighted to announce that, less than a year after leaving closed beta, Evernote now has more than one million registered users! That’s a lot of people. It’s enough to make us the 10th largest city in the US or the 155th largest country in the world (take that, Djibouti)! Think of it this way: if you queued up every Evernote user single-file, there would be a million people in that line.

We wanted to make Evernote useful to anyone who values what’s in their brains, people that have substantive things that they want to remember for work, school or play. I’m really happy (and relieved) that there are enough of you out there to give us such a quickly growing business.

It took New York City 250 years to grow to a million people. It took AOL nine years. Twitter got to a million users in about a year and a half. We did it in less than one.

And, of course, we got here the hard way.

The conventional wisdom on how to make a fast-growing Internet service goes something like this: (1) make it web-only, (2) load it up with active social and viral features, (3) go after the young people who’ll try anything new, and (4) don’t worry about revenue. We did the exact opposite: native downloadable software, nothing inherently social (yet!), a user base made up of college students and older professionals, and a business model that’s got us pointed at profitability in the not-too-distant future.

So, if you’re one of the thirty people who works at Evernote: thanks for the insanely hard work this past year! You just built something that a million people use! How cool is that?

If you’re one of the million people who use Evernote: we can only say thank you for finding us and for sticking with us! We’ve got a ton of great stuff coming out soon, which will make your external brain the envy of all your friends.

If you’re one of the other six billion, six hundred and thirty three million people on the planet: come on in, we’re saving you a spot.

We recently announced the availability of Evernote for BlackBerry. Since then, many of you have requested a direct download link. You’ll find it below. But first, an explanation of why we prefer to distribute via BlackBerry App World.

BlackBerry smartphones come in lots of flavors: different devices, different operating systems, different carriers. Each of these variables can affect the way that Evernote functions on a device. BlackBerry App World allows us to ensure that only those devices that we’ve tested get the application.

By downloading below, you understand that we do not officially support your flavor combination and, as a result, do not guarantee that the application will work as expected.

BlackBerry App World is still the preferred download method, so please check there before downloading here.

Downloads

There are two installation options. Download the ZIP file and install the application using BlackBerry Download Manager on your desktop. Alternatively, point your BlackBerry browser at the appropriate link to begin an Over The Air (OTA) download. If you have a Storm, please download the Storm version.

BlackBerry (non-Storm): ZIP | OTA: http://s.evernote.com/bbota
BlackBerry Storm: ZIP | OTA: http://s.evernote.com/stormota

Evernote for BlackBerry, you say?

The, much (read: MUCH) requested, native Evernote for BlackBerry is now available. Yes, it’s true. BlackBerry® owners, you now get a slick app to create new notes and search through all of your existing Evernote content.

We’re very excited about this release because, like a BlackBerry, Evernote is designed to fit perfectly into today’s fluid life/work mix. The minute you need to remember something, take out your BlackBerry and use Evernote to capture or recall whatever it is, then go on with your life. Isn’t it nice not having to worry about forgetting stuff?

Features

Evernote for BlackBerry lets you create notes containing text, snapshots, voice recordings, and file attachments. Once created, the new content is automatically sent to the Evernote Service, making it available across all the versions of Evernote that you use. You can also access your existing notes, search by keywords, filter by tags, or simply browse.

It is important to note that features are linked to the capabilities of your device. For example, if your BlackBerry does not have a camera, then you will not see the Snapshot note option. Also, the note searching and display experience depends on the capabilities of your BlackBerry’s built-in web browser. In general, the newer your BlackBerry, the better Evernote will run on it.

Compatibility

Evernote for BlackBerry is compatible with recent BlackBerry smartphones. Currently supported devices are:

BlackBerry® Bold™

BlackBerry® Curve™

BlackBerry® Storm™

More soon (subscribe to this blog or follow us on Twitter to be alerted)

We will release an update shortly, which will add support for some additional devices. Many older BlackBerry smartphones can be upgraded to newer operating systems. Please check with your BlackBerry vendor or carrier. Unfortunately, due to device limitations, some smartphones will not be compatible with Evernote for BlackBerry.

Availability

Evernote for BlackBerry is available through BlackBerry App World in the Productivity & Utility > Personal Organization category.

[UPDATE: A direct download is now available on our BlackBerry page]

BlackBerry App World is designed to only display applications that are compatible with your device, which mean that Evernote will only show up if your smartphone is listed above.

What’s next?

Tons of cool stuff. So, stay tuned.

Best thumbnails ever

We designed Evernote for Mac to be a visual memory aide, and easy-to-scan thumbnails are a big part of the fun. We’ve completely redesigned the thumbnails in this release to make them easier to use and prettier to look at. The thumbnails now have different shapes based on the content of your notes; adding a new dimension to your visual memory. They now also sport badges to quickly indicate and identify file attachments. These new thumbnails are available in both Thumbnail and Mixed views.

Other visual enhancements

Visual update to left-hand navigation

Improved the search explanation menu alignment

Improved Mixed View thumbnails and text layout

Updated look for the Monthly Usage meter

There are also a bunch of bug fixes, as well as support for the “audio/amr” file type for both free and premium accounts. If you already have Evernote for Mac installed, just check for updates and grab the new version. You can also download it from here.

For all of you Evernote for Windows users out there, do not fear. There are some exciting updates coming your way soon.
