Our Evernote for Windows team has been hard at work for much of the past year building a completely new Evernote experience. We rethought and redesigned everything to make the app easier to use, more flexible, and more beautiful than ever.

We’re excited to give you a preview of Evernote 5 for Windows Desktop. Download the beta »

There are over a hundred improvements and enhancements throughout the app. We’ve updated the interface to not only look more modern, but also let you access the things you want more easily. We’ve added new search and discovery functions to intelligently help you find what you’re looking for, and sometimes surface relevant information before you even think to look.

This is a tremendous evolution of Evernote for Windows Desktop. Give it a shot and let us know what you think. There’s a lot more to come.

Important: It’s a Beta!

Evernote 5 is currently in beta. In fact, this is the first of several betas that we’ll be releasing. Before installing it, please be sure that you’re comfortable using early software. While unlikely, you may even experience various issues and possibly even data loss. Also, certain features, like Reminders, are yet to be implemented. They’ll be coming soon.

After upgrade or clean installation, Evernote.exe fails to start with “Entry point not found” error, for sqlite3Fts3InitTasTermsModule in LibSQLite.dll
    Looking for a solution

    • Daniel Lu

      We’re investigating the issue now

  • Brian Tobin

Saved Search is there. Save Search with the button in the pull-down search menu. It makes much more sense.

  • Brian Tobin

This is an opt-in Beta release only, so you can still run the old version just fine. All users should be on the previous Evernote version unless they are ready to try out Beta software.

    • Disa

      Can I go back, please?

    • Disa

      Can I go back, please?

  • Brian Tobin

Look for the View/Sort button at the top-right of your Notes List.

  • Owen Harvey

Am I missing something? Why is there still no option for reminders? Hopefully it will be in the final release.

    • Daniel Lu

      We’re working on it!

  • Daniel Lu

Sorry about that. We’re investigating this now

    • Daniel Lu

If you uninstall and manually check that there isn’t anything in C:Program Files (x86)EvernoteEvernote then install the Beta it should work fine. You can also contact customer support

  • jdrch

Love the redesign, guys. Great job!

    • Daniel Lu

      Thanks much!

  • Daniel Lu

    You’re welcome!

  • Anja

I was looking forward to this… Thanks for all the hard work you’ve done, it’s beautiful!

  • Fowzie Smith-Tahir

    Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • pleo624

Awesome! Dido reminders, but the interface is sweet looking. Thanks, and keep up the great work guys!

  • Daniel Lu

You can use different versions on different machines

  • Daniel Lu

Saved Searches should all be there. Will dive into it

  • Ryan Wallace

Love the look. I’d love to see some of the Evernote green mixed in with the new design. Maybe as an Appearences option?

    • Mark LaFlamme

That’s what’s missing! Green. Yes, indeed. That’s mostly sentimental, though.

    • David Popely

I’d love to see the green back as well. Otherwise, I think it’s great. For me, it’s not Evernote without the green……let’s not get so functionally-focused that we lose the aesthetic. One of the things that makes me an Evernote user is the aesthetic – absent from some other similar suites I have tried.

  • John

You do realize that “coming soon” is what you promised 2 months ago for reminders, right?

    • Kamran Mackey

You do realize that Reminders only came out like last month?

      • Gabriel

nop, buddy. over 2 months ago, May 23. http://blog.evernote.com/blog/2013/05/23/evernote-reminders-are-here-on-mac-ios-and-web-2/

      • John

You do know how to check the date of blog announcements, yes?

  • Mark LaFlamme

Am I nuts? Or is there no “new note” button?
EDIT: Turns out I’m only sort of nuts. Just had to add the button through the customize menu.

    • Daniel Lu

We should keep the same toolbar that you had before upgrade

  • Raymond Gonsalves

Love the new minimial UI but I miss the small snippet view in Evernote 4.x Snippets in Evernote 5.0 are too big with too much text

  • Raymond Gonsalves

Update to my last post. Love the minimalist Evernote 5.0 UI however I miss Thumbnail View of Evernote 4.x Can you please re-introduce to Evernote 5?

  • El Amir Bey

Yesssss, can’ t wait to experience the new interface. Thanks A Mill

  • Greg Baker

Surely reminders will be in the official release, right?

  • turtlewins

Fail. Thumbnail view has been replaced by “Card View”, which is ugly and superimposes the note title OVER the image? I’d use Snippet view if I could see the TOP of a note, which happens to be the most important part of a note, by the way. And this is supposed to be “cleaner”?

  • Valley

I’m looking forward to reminders too. But this new interface looks promising. I think related notes will be a bonus. But I’ll wait until it’s out of beta.

  • Kamran Mackey

I do hope you will be giving the Evernote 5 for Windows sidebar look like the sidebar in the Mac version before the final version is released because I like the sidebar in the Mac version much better as it’s much more beautiful.

  • Sam Brown

The search function seems to only search for “all” tags (even if “any” is selected). Meaning an “and” search and not being able to do an “or” search.

Looks good but the all caps menu titles makes for poor readability—form over function in my opinion.

  • royb2000

This is an outstanding look. It’s much easier to navigate and devotes more screen real estate to function. Thanks. Make this permanent, please.

  • Royi

Will you create a Metro Application?

    Thanks.

    • Daniel Lu

      We’ve had one since launch!

  • Amir Masoud

    Check this out: http://nimblebox.me

  • NasuhAkın

    I like it!!! Well Done.

  • Kamran Mackey

Hi. For some reason Audio Notes aren’t working in the current release of the Evernote 5 for Windows Desktop beta.

  • dave birney

i installed it just too see and am back using the old version again. i definitely like the direction its going in.
but for me it was kind of confusing when multiple notes were open in different windows. its really hard to differentiate them from one other.
even when i dont have any notes open, the 3 sections sort of blend into each other. maybe have the background of the snippet/thumbnail view slightly darker.

also once a search term was typed in, i couldnt change what notebook to search in. i had to click on that notebook and then type the search query again. but maybe i missed something.

also also, the notebook view on the left, when i try to scroll back up to the top (using trackpoint on lenovo x220t) it just keeps looping around and it ends up back down the bottom once i stop.

look forward to it getting out of beta anyway :)

  • Jared F

Can’t wait for the osx version to get this interface. I can’t stand using the current one… and don’t use it as its so cumbersome.

  • Inha1966

How does one go about reporting bugs in the beta?

  • Amrish

There should be option , SWITCH TO OLDER VERSION, if we don’t like new version.

    • AG

You guys are way too picky. Not everything is going to be perfect!

  • David Guillaume

Shortcuts are now only visible in the Left Panel, I hate this as I usually have this closed to save space on my small screen.

  • David Guillaume

Please add the shortcuts back to the menu bar and make it possible to select all notes from the drop down list above the note list as I usually have my left panel closed on my small screen.

  • Anton Monakov

I really hope that more color is added to the final release UI. Working in black&white (Office 2013 style!) is way more difficult (for me, at least).

  • Uri

+1! You do that, and I go premium!

  • adelrefaat

    Very neat interface, Great Job!

  • Kamran Zia

Windows mobile are really getting better and better. I started following up the news on http://www.mobileosworld.com and subscribed on their feed via email. looking at the new advancements and apps on windows, i can see its future bright. Nokia is especially the main contributor to windows success Right? What do you say

  • NasuhAkın

How about reminders for Windows version ?

  • zemane1

I have just installed ENWIN 5Beta in Portuguese and the License Agreement and first Evernote screen came up in English.

  • Moosa Mahsoom

A delayed launch but, worth it….. Waiting for penultimate for android…..

Should we use standard support to raise faults encountered while working with the Beta or is there some other support method you’d like us to use?

  • Richard Durishin

Thank you! I love the new design. I wouldn’t mind a splash of green somewhere at all but, the layout is much more efficient than the layout of 5.2 running on my Mac. Keep it up!

  • mcgaritydotme

“Let’s make the Windows UI as a**-tastic as the Mac UI so things *look* the same. Yet not include Mac/Android/iOS features like Reminders so they actually *function* the same.” — Evernote design team

  • Raymond Gonsalves

Please bring back Thumbnail view… please, please, please

  • Daniel Lu

We’ll look into this. Are you doing a drag & drop?

    • Ryan Bond

No I was clicking the attach button

  • Daniel Lu

    Yep, working on both :)

  • Daniel Lu

Contrast between panels or contrast between text and background?

    • Greg Baker

After using Evernote 5 beta over the weekend, the largest usability obstacle I’ve encountered is when using the left-most panel which displays my notebooks and tags. There isn’t enough contrastl/visual difference for me to quickly find what I’m looking for, so each time I have to visually scan the entire list. The notes, for example, look the same as tags aside from the section headers. The low-contrast panels add to the feeling of being lost while trying to find the notebook or tag I’m searching for.

  • Daniel Lu

  • Carson

Command line tool using “ENScript.exe” is broken.

  • Dawn

I would be lost without Evernote in my business and was excited to see the new Beta, however I have already switched back to 4. EN kept crashing every time I would modify something, my notebook stack names wouldn’t hold and the lack of contrast made it very frustrating to use.

I would love to see more of the MAC look o the PC side, it is so much cleaner and user friendly!

  • Matthew Yankelovich

For me, the interface’s biggest flaw continues to be performance. It’s slightly faster than the the last version, but that’s just not enough. I agree with others in this thread, the UI needs way more contrast; there’s just not enough definition between areas.

I appreciate all the work you guys did, but I don’t see any new features that are *meaningful*, which means there’s a bit of disconnect between your product team and your paying customers.

Expecting more from subsequent updates; but I do appreciate how much effort this must have been to release.

    • Daniel Lu

Much of the work we did in this first beta lays the groundwork for upcoming improvements. We wanted to get this out sooner rather than later to get some early feedback. Thanks for commenting!

      • Matthew Yankelovich

Thanks for the reply. I look forward to what you have in the pipeline. I certainly understand the release early and often model; perhaps I was being a little reactionary.

  • kahless

Is it just me or has anybody else noted that Evernote seems to push out all the best features to every other operating system other than Windows. Over the last few weeks I have been pestered with e-mails from Evernote detailing all the cool features that Mac users are getting and wondering who we(Windows Users) have to sleep with or kill at Evernote to get the same attention. I use Evernote on all my devices, it is essential to the way I work, I have a desktop, laptop, netbook and a tablet, all Windows 7 plus a Galaxy sII and an Asus Tablet that run on Android. My Android devices show me how amazing Evernote can be and I am frustrated that I can’t get the same great features on my Windows machines that I get on my other devices.

As for the new(This has to be a joke, right) beta; read the blurb and thought wow; installed the software and thought Holy Crap!!!! What were they smoking when they came up with this bloody awful excuse for an interface. It is supposed to mirror the interface available to Mac OSX, which is so elegant; the new interface, elegant, I do not think so. I know everyone is trying to go minimalist but there comes a point when less is definably not more. The old note layout had all the information that I needed right there in the header not hidden away behind some info button and why do I need an Atlas, it isn’t critical that I know where I was when I wrote my shopping list or anything else for that matter. What would have been so much better is improvements to the text editing(Should have been fixed years ago), format issues, if Kingsoft Office(Free) can handle my documents on Android and Windows with no re-editing then software I pay for ought to be able to do the same. Reminders, when is this great feature going to be implemented on Windows and why move the shortcuts to the notebook pane. All it does is cause confusion and add clutter, and on my system only worked when it felt like it. As for the related notes feature thats what notebooks are for, or at least that’s what I thought they where for. Maybe I’m using it wrong. Even with decent broadband I have always found the web interface to be slow in the extreme so have always relied on the desktop and its ability to sync with all my other machines and the cloud. One of the great features is Evernote’s ability to sync in the background so I can continue working and not have to worry about data loss or having to remember to sync manually. On the beta if you sync the whole application locks you out until the sync finishes. I uninstalled this travesty after thirty mins and will be in no great hurry to re-install unless I have no option but to upgrade.

So far guys, seriously epic fail!!!!

    • Daniel Lu

Thanks for commenting. You’ll be seeing us roll out improvements in upcoming betas, a lot of what we did in this initial beta sets the backdrop for upcoming features.

We’ll be on the lookout for reports of sync issues. We haven’t changed too much there, so the new crashes is rather peculiar. If you post at http://discussion.evernote.com the forums are easier to do back and forth in.

      • Jan van Luijn

Daniel, do you have a rough schedule of roling these betas out?

    • troom007

While the comment above is full of emotions, I totally agree with the problems it described!

    • Russell Ablewhite

Time to just concentrate on Evernote and stop playing around in app land?

  • Ray Cheshire

Loving the new look…seems faster too but that may be an illusion. Just a few bits to sort now…reminders and from a purely aesthetic point of view a splash of the old evernote green please.

  • Ric Reyes

New look is definitely an improvement. I didn’t realize how distracting ver 4 was until I tried ver 5. Excited to get Reminders!

  • Anton Monakov

After i removed smth from the left pane… How do i put it back? There are no options for that.

  • shel

I am new to Evernote and am using the newest version. I don’t have or can’t find the webclipper. Can someone please advise? thank you!!

    • KaseyFHickey

You can download the Web Clipper for your browser of choice right here: http://evernote.com/webclipper/

      • shel

        thanks Kasey,

I had downloaded the latest version and I had to uninstall it to get the version with the Web Clipper.

        Cheers,

  • Raymond Gonsalves

Yes I understand the intent to minimize the UI so that our notes take visual prominence, but how about a little ios blue highlight like what you see when the ios Alarm clock is selected on the iphone clock app? Evernote 5.0 is sooooo gray its depressing :(

    • Daniel Lu

      Thanks for the feedback!

  • moshner

Can you speed up auto-completion of tags? I would like for it to move as fast as I type.

  • Mike Galusha

Very sad to see the Windows 8/Office 2013 look and feel. Just about as ugly a UI as I can imagine. Hoping I won’t be forced to upgrade when this goes final. :(

  • Joe Berry

Unfortunately, I have to go back to version 4. I have an Epson scanner. I use the accompanying Document Capture Pro software to automatically import my scanned documents into Evernote (it’s done automatically when I press the ‘Evernote’ button). With the beta version, I get no error message when pressing the Evernote button but the document does not show up in Evernote. I tried syncing, exiting/restarting, checking all my notebooks, etc. The scanned docs just don’t show up. I switched back to version 4 and everything works fine.

  • Ryan

I think if you right click on a notebook or tag and click “add to shortcuts”, your shortcuts may come back. Same thing happened to me, but it was because I accidentally removed the shortcuts from the sidebar.

  • Ryan

Liking the updates. Main thing I’m missing right now is the ability to add shortcuts to the toolbar as custom buttons. It’s not really that big of a deal since you can quickly get to any saved searches or shortcuts in the new search bar, but it was nice to have the option. I had a bunch of custom buttons that allowed me to navigate through my notes quickly.

I also agree with everyone else that It doesn’t look all that great (subjective of course). Not that it looks bad, but it may be nice to give people the ability to customize the look and feel a little bit.

  • Tom

So far, really nice. The Windows app was WAY overdue for a rewrite, and you guys have done a great job. The interface is a bit bland, and spartan, though, and is starting to look like everything else, making it really difficult to see where one Window ends, and the next begins.

  • steveinadelaide

Since installing the beta I have noticed that the Outlook web clipper doesn’t display tags that are entered. I can enter them ok, But where they should be listed in the dialogue box there’s just a blank space

  • CK

I’m a premium user (meaning I actually pay to use this product) and have been using Windows Beta 5 about a week. Speaking purely about the look and feel, I cannot figure out what possessed the designers to make such a BAD DECISION. The GUI is just plain UGLY. I have download more professionally appealing applications for free on Sourceforge. It’s so bad that I stopped using it and switched to the web app. I’m only keeping the local version for if my connection drops. I am very nervous that their next assignment is to destroy the IOS version as well, which would really ruin my day.

    • troom007

      1) This design matches Windows 8. If you are still on XP (OMG!), then this interface will really look bad.
      2) You can always go back to EN4.

  • Mark Forster

Great release. One extremely serious flaw though: it is no longer compatible with the Doxie scanner. This will cause considerable disruption to anyone who scans a lot of stuff into Evernote. I suggest this gets sorted out quickly.

  • David Earl

Though I see I can customize buttons on the toolbar, I don’t seem to be able to add the button I really want: ‘New Notebook’. It’s still buried away on the file menu.

  • KaseyFHickey

Thanks for alerting us to this. All appropriate attributions will be listed in the next update.

  • Moosa Mahsoom

I wonder when is the stable version is going to be released?
Hope it is going to be released by late-August or early-Septemble…

  • Wozn2

Add my name to the list of those who think the interface is too bland. Without even a hint of green and only a tiny evernote icon, it’s difficult to tell it apart from other apps when there are multiple overlapping windows.

  • Jan van Luijn

Tried it, but had go back to 4 :-S I have around 2000 notes in total and it took Evernote 5 forever just to scroll down the notes

  • TiffanyinTexas

Don’t need reminders. Need a pop-up calendar Subject Line date where I can put in “when something happened” or “when something needs to be seen again” instead of when it was scanned in.

    • Grandtastic

Agreed. For a long time now, I’ve just been editing the “Date Created” and using that as a “due date.”

  • dmacleo

that has got to be the ugliest interface I have ever seen. back to V4 for me.

  • Chuz_Cr

I am little surprise that Windows New Version does not look like Mac Version. I love the Mac Version,

  • rationaloutlook

It should be end-to-end encryption so that Evernote does not have the keys.

While the kids in Evernote seem to spend most of their time producing fancy apps and pointless mac orientated updates to impress the other kids they seem to have neglected the more professional side of Evernote. The actual program itself is still missing important user features. Forgotten about the actual users of the thing? Still no improvement on the substandard word processor within which renders it useless as an actual writing tool, still no alphabetical listing and a global listing which makes it impossible to have a meaningful listing system are but two of these basic failings. Never mind snazzy upgrades and pretty apps., please get the actual application up to standard.

    • Grandtastic

      Here, here!

  • Grandtastic

    To-dos or reminders?
I thought I’d be excited to have reminders, but they’re not proving to be very useful for me. To begin with, I keep EN in list view most of the time. My to-dos and projects are easier to read and filter this way. But, reminders aren’t displayed in list view. Will they ever be?

Furthermore, I’ve been using the “to-do box” in my todo notes. (The saved search “tag:$Work tag:!NA Todo:false” shows me my next actions list.) Ticking the to-do box “done” has no impact on reminders. Ticking reminders “done” has no impact on to-do boxes. To manage to-do items that I defer to a later date, I’m editing the “date created” and tagging the notes with “!waiting”. This is a bit of hack (ala The Secret Weapon) but it works well. I thought I would use the reminders to supplant this system, but, as it stands, this won’t do. Is there a “has reminder” search option? Are there plans to add “Reminder Date” to the column headers in list view for sorting?

I use and rely on EN daily.

    I eagerly await useful improvements.

Am I foolish to expect any?

  • lindermanj21

I would love to be able to type and write in the same note without having to create a completely separate “ink note.” This would help make notes more flexible.

  • David Martin

Installed quickly, asked to shutdown Outlook (presumably for the add-in), loading took forever, and when it finally arrived…pimple-covered butt ugly. Far and away the ugliest, most difficult to read user interface ever conceived.

Did any developer at Evernote ever read a textbook regarding sensory and perception psychology? Obviously not.

Did a quick uninstall—nothing to see here!—and reinstalled Evernote 4. Stupid program reset all of my options and preferences and never asked about installing the Outlook add-in, so now that too is gone.

Beta is beta, but this is a POS. If upgrading becomes required, I’m moving to One Note.

    A very disaffected Premium user.

    David Martin, Ph.D.

Evernote support, I’ll probably never convince you to stay away from the ‘flat design’ and go back to higher contrast, but I do have a few nagging complaints with the new layout upon first glance, that I hope you’ll consider:
    1. PLEASE consider going back to a more compressed vertical spacing in the left side bar – this is precious real estate, which I constantly use for dragging and dropping to tags/notebooks etc. With this new ‘Fischer Price’ layout I can fit only about half the information in the left sidebar that I could with ver 4.
    2. Can we have a little splash of color, or SOMETHING designating a Notebook from a Tag? There is no clear delineation anymore.
    3. I used the top ‘shortcut bar’ space all the time. The shortcuts being in the left sidebar again takes up valuable real estate. Can we at least have a choice of location?
    4. I no longer have the option of showing a scaled down, or no ‘Note Info’? Again, valuable real estate lost.

Just installed the Version 5 Beta and the very first thing that strkies me in the new interface is that I can no longer see the difference between local notebooks and the synchronized ones (the icon has disappeared!) :-(

Support has instructions for the 2732 error. You can also try our forums, folks have posted their solutions as well.

  • Greg Baker

I’m sure everyone is working hard over there. I appreciate it.

Thanks Daniel! The instructions here worked perfectly. http://discussion.evernote.com/topic/36401-windows-error-code-2732-workarounds/
