What will you accomplish in 2015? Throughout January, we’re sharing our favorite #EvernoteTips, shortcuts, and tricks perfect for powering productivity, whether you work for yourself or on a team.

We’ve already given you ways to organize your notes with Evernote. You can create table of contents, stack notes into notebooks, and use note links.

Another way to group related notes together is by merging them together. It’s really simple. Let’s say you were planning a trip to South America and wanted to group your research for Buenos Aires restaurants into one comprehensive note. By selecting the multiple notes you’ve already created, you can combine them into a single note with the click of a button.

Here’s how to merge your notes with Evernote for Mac and Windows:

In Evernote, select multiple notes while holding down Ctrl+click on Windows or Cmd+click on Mac. Then, select Merge Notes in the window that appears beside the notes list. This will combine the selected notes into a single note and place the original notes into the Trash.

If you’d like to add tags to classify your merged notes, enter them in the space provided.

Please note: If you make a mistake merging notes or would like to retain the original notes, restore each individual note from your trash.

Anyone know how to change the order of notes to be merged using this process? I couldn’t figure out a way to do that, reducing the value of this feature. (I end up copying and pasting content from multiple notes in the order I want.)

Ok, so how do you do that on an iPhone or iPad?

    • Taylor Pipes

You can only merge notes on Evernote desktop (Mac or Windows).

        …and on Evernote Web.

How can I sort the notes when I merge them? They never seem to merge in the order I want.

    • Taylor Pipes

For Mac: Merged notes are sorted in the same order as they are listed, as specified in the Sort by: options, such as “Title,” “Date created,” “Date Updated,” and more.

For Windows: Merged notes are sorted in the order the notes are selected for the merge, with the contents of the first note displayed at the top and the contents of the last note selected displayed towards the end of the note.

It would be best, with Mac, to be able to highlight notes in the order we want them merged

What is the way to control the order of the notes in the merge stack? I can not figure out how to accomplish this on a Mac.

What sequence/order are the notes merged in? I never seem to be able to control this. Seems random, but maybe I am missing something.

I quit trying to merge notes a long time ago. I never could predict the order in which they’d be merged together, and you can’t reorder them after you merge.

Before merging notes, consider creating a Table of Contents as an option. That way, the order doesn’t matter as each is hyperlinked to the ToC. Note that as new related notes are added, the ToC must be recreated so that might make this an unfavorable option. I create ToCs for all my grouped notes and then put the ToCs in a Notebook called Table of Contents and add it to my favorites so it is quickly accessible.

This is really great advice. Thanks for sharing, Robert.

great idea – here is some info and a video on how to create a TOC – thanks for the suggestion https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/37997-how-tuesday-how-to-create-a-table-of-contents/

This REALLY needs to be restored in the browser version and added to the Android version. I use it all the time for “annoying websites (like Forbes), that won’t let you clip an entire article from a “view as one page / print” option. It used to work in the my chrome browser, now it won’t. Given that I use a linux laptop, a chromebook, and an Android (lollipop) tablet, this really useful tool no longer works. Help please!!!

Why is it that after merging notes I lose the information about localization?

  • Staffan Backman

I seem to lose data in my monthly upload allowance when merging notes, its that suppose to be the case? Kind of suck getting rid of the whole month in 20 min of merging.

Can you only merge Notes in a Notebook you created versus one that is shared with you? I can merge Notes in my “First Notebook,” but not in one shared with me. Is there anyway to grant someone “merging” privileges?

    • Maxflow

      Same issue is with me

  • Maxflow

Does anyone know, how to merge notes in a notebook shared by other person. That merge option is greyed
