Like many of you, we’re excited about the release of Apple iOS 10. We’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to bring you an iOS update to Evernote that makes the most of the new features in iOS 10. Some of the updates are pretty invisible to you—you might notice we’ve made it easier to find your notes, your scans have become more accurate. Other times, we release bigger changes. If you have an iOS device, you’ll soon see an update called Evernote Version 7.17. We’re all pretty excited about this release.

In 7.17, you get enhanced features that go along with the new capabilities built into iOS 10. This release will expand not only what you can do with Evernote, but how you interact with it on your device. Here’s an overview of what you can expect:

Extended 3D Touch features

If you have an iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, or iPhone 7 Plus, press the Evernote app a little harder to see quick actions to create a new note, take a photo, create a reminder, or search Evernote. You also have a new quick action available in iOS 10, the option to Share Evernote, which will allow you to send the link to the Evernote app in the App Store to anyone you choose. Pressing on the Evernote icon will also give you access to the updated Evernote Widget that you can add to your device’s Search screen.

Updated Widget

Now when you swipe from left to right from the Home screen or the Lock screen, you’ll find the new place for widgets: the Search screen. Add the updated Evernote widget to view a single suggested note. Toggle to the expanded mode to expose up to three of your most relevant notes, and perform frequently-used actions, including search, camera, start a new note, or reminder.

iMessage

We’re really happy about what’s coming to Messages. With the introduction of the App Store for iMessage in iOS 10, you can do more with messaging than ever before. Now, that includes sharing a copy of a note from Evernote with anyone else using iMessage, without leaving the Messages app. Launch Evernote for iMessage, search your notes, and select the one you want to send. Evernote for iMessage lets you share notes with other iMessage users. If your recipient already has Evernote, the link will open right in the iMessage app. This is a perfect way to send meeting and project details, reminders, class notes, or anything you want to share on the go.

Once you’ve upgraded to iOS 10, be sure to also download Evernote 7.17 to take full advantage of all the advancements, updates, and improvements we’ve been working on to ensure your notes are always easy to write, search, find, and share.

Update to version 7.17 today!

How do you use Evernote with iMessage? I have installed iOS 10 and the new Evernote 7.17 update, but Evernote is not show up in my iMessage tray. Please tell me what I need to do to get this working. Thanks!

    • prosen

Robert, if you’ve installed iOS 10, open Messages. Start an iMessage. You’ll see three icons at the bottom: a camera, a heart, and an App Store. Tap the App Store icon, and you’ll see options for installing iMessage apps. Click the + icon for the store. There are some iMessage apps in there now, Evernote among them. -Pam R

I have added evernote in the imessage but all I see is just the icon and nothing is happening

You can’t contact support by anything other than Twitter if you have a Basic account, so I am stuck because there is no Evernote iMessage app in the App Store and I am allergic to Twitter. Maybe this is because I am on the UK App Store and it hasn’t spread beyond the US yet?

          • prosen

Hi, there, Ian! You might be able to find the help you need on this Help doc: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/226513107. You can find iMessage apps when you go into Messages on your iOS device. Start a message, and you’ll see three icons–a camera, a heart, and the app store icon. Select the app store icon and it will take you directly to the iMessages app store. Select the apps you want, and they’ll be included with iMessage. Hope that helps! -Pam R

hey all – was having this issue – you need to click “manage” in the app store within iMessage and then enable Evernote (it is automatically disabled for some reason) – then it shows up!

      • jay

Your instructions are not complete. This worked for me:

You’ll see three icons at the bottom: a camera, a heart, and an App Store (A). Tap the App Store icon. Then tap the 4 gray ovals in the bottom left corner. Then tap the + Store button. Then tap the Manage tab. There are some iMessage apps in there now, Evernote among them.

        • jay

ok… so now how do I used it. I go to iMessage and see nothing about Evernote there…..

    • jay

I just chatted with tech support and we got it working. The key was to DELETE the Evernote app, then download it again. Then sign into it. Then go over to iMessage and voila, I had Evernote in my iMessage tray.

  • Robert Johnson

Also, I have searched the app store for “Evernote for iMessage” and it does not exist. Do I need to download a separate Evernote app to make it work? Please explain.

    • prosen

Hey, Robert– here’s a help doc to get you started with Evernote for iMessages: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/226513107. Hope this helps! -Pam R

      • epattyj

Thanks prosen! I am up and running now. A little added not that people might find helpful is that after you touch the App Store icon, if you do not see the “+” Store icon look for the set of 4 dots in a square in the lower left hand corner to access the icon screen.

  • Masuk Facebook

with the Evernote app updates this course will be better than ever

  • Keith

I enabled notes in the widget and have the updated app, but Evernote doesn’t show up as an option in the widget edit screen. Bummer.

    • MikeJONES

Keith, do a Soft Reset (hold Sleep & Home buttons until you see the Apple logo). I suspect you’ll be good to go when you reboot. Same thing happened to me.

    • prosen

      • Bob

It looks like Evernote is advertising a new feature that is not fully cooked. I wish you guys would explain things better when you launch new features. I’ve been premium since July 2012 and this has always annoyed me – lack of easily accessible information on how to use features. I called support one time and the support person said “Use google search, that’s what I do”

        • prosen

Hi again, Bob. Have you had a chance to look over the help doc that explains iMessages? https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/226513107? I hope you find it helpful and will be up and running with Evernote for iMessages soon! -Pam R

  • Benjamin Dodd

Why can I not turn off the “show recently viewed notes” in the widget? All I want are the quick actions. Why is there an option to turn off “view notes in widget” if they are just hard-coded into the widget?

    • JD

Yes. If you turn off the option for showing notes, it would be nice to have a thin widget with just the actions. Instead you get boilerplate text. 🙁

  • bradford

question on 3d touch menu that appears – what is the setting / criteria to show the note below “New Note”? cannot tell how it is selecting that particular note to display

Also is the functionality only imessage to imessage? if i send from imessage to someone who uses google hangouts as their text app, note link does not appear – only ? shows.

  • Ric Donato

Installed iOS 10, updated Evernote, using iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6S Plus.

In iMessage we see the Evernote icon. It is only an icon, cannot do anything with it. Show Notes in Widget is turned on, clicking the Evernote icon nothing happens.

    • prosen

Thank you for the feedback. Knowing they are aware of this issue they will soon have this fixed.

    • Tate

As of the night of September 15 after enabling the app for messages I’m still just seeing the icon without any functionality, but that is also the case for all the other apps I enabled from installed apps.

      • Tate

Just uninstalled everything and installed from the messages App Store. After I signed into the main app I finally was able to see notes in the messages app.

      • prosen

Tate, this is an ongoing issue our support team is aware of, and they’re working on a solution. This is happening for a small number of customers. Stay tuned, we’ll have you sharing notes via iMessage in no time! -Pam R

  • Adam

Unfortunate the iMessage part isn’t working for me. It only shows the icon. Uninstalling and reinstalling Evernote didn’t help either.

    • prosen

Matt, it’s available on all versions of Evernote if you have an iPhone or iPad running iOS 10. While I appreciate this update, the one update many users haven’t heard nor seen is the ability for users to export scanned business cards to outside CRM or contact management systems.

    • prosen

Paul, Support is aware that this is a problem for some users, and they’re working to correct it. Visit https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/categories/200001917-Troubleshooting and talk to someone on the support team for more info. Hope this helps! -Pam R

  • Brian

Works flawlessly on my iPhone. Love it! iPad Pro, not so much. The icon is there, and clicking it yields a list of notes, but from that point on it fails. Searching yields no results and clicking any recent note results in ‘Unable to load Evernote.’

  • Severine

Simply amazing. The best update both for Evernote and IOS. It works a treat on IPhone 6S.
    Productivity power up.

  • Kevin

It would be great if we could send a message to Evernote

  • Myles Kesten

I’ve found the widget, I’m updated to 7.17.1.346642 and iOS 10 and when I click on a file to include in iMessage and get an error message “Unable to load Evernote.” And I’ve closed all other apps in the background on my iPhone 6S.

The troubleshooting link you provided is general — all troubleshooting — not for imessage. When I search on imessage in troubleshooting, I get the other link you shared: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/226513107 which I followed, but am just stuck with your icon and no notes.

  • Doug Lerner

Any hints on how to use Evernote with iMessage? There isn’t a clue written in the email or above on how to actually use it.

    • prosen

Hi, Doug! iMessaging can be a little confusing at first. The app store for iMessages is located within the messages app. You might be able to find the help you need on this Help doc: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/226513107. Start a message, and you’ll see three icons–a camera, a heart, and the app store icon. Select the app store icon and it will take you directly to the iMessages app store. Select the apps you want, and they’ll be included with iMessage. Hope that helps! -Pam R

  • Arne Sigurd Rognan Nielsen

No problems here! I reset the network and boom it was there. Nice!

  • Robert

I don’t see the Evernote iMessage app in the store. Am I missing something? I see that in the regular app in the store it says INCLUDES iMessage but I don’t see an actual app.

    • prosen

Hi, Robert, perhaps this help doc on our site will help. https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/226513107. You can find iMessage apps when you go into Messages on your iOS device. The suppprt people must be taking a break. I tweeted @evernotehelps and have heard nothing. The website was most unhelpful. Why should I continue to pay for a premium account when I am unable to find assistance for a product that is not working?

  • Scheer Patti

This makes no sense to me. I don’t even know what a widget is.

    • prosen

Patti, a widget is a little like an app extension. In OS 10, swipe your screen from left to right from your home screen, and you’ll see some widgets already built in for you. They include things like the weather, your calendar, or any reminders that you’ve set for yourself. Now, you can add widgets from many more apps than ever before. Evernote is one of them. If you scroll to the bottom of the widgets, you’ll see an edit button that will allow you to add or remove widgets. In the list, you should see Evernote. Hope that helps! -Pam R

  • Brian Ansorge

    OK. I’ll bite: what’s a “widget?”

And, why do I “need” one?

    • prosen

Hi, Brian, if you have an iOS device, you probably already have some widgets, but it’s possible that you didn’t know that’s what they were called. In OS 10, swipe your screen from left to right from your home screen, and you’ll see some widgets already built in for you. They include things like the weather, your calendar, or any reminders that you’ve set for yourself. Now, you can add widgets from many more apps than ever before. Evernote is one of them. • Brian Ansorge

OK. Thanks Prosen. Problem solved. Just checked, earlier, today. 9.3.5 is *it* for me [4S], then. I assumed 10 was not released, yet.

I was hearing all this talk about “10” and thinking, “hmmm, must be a ‘beta’ floating around somewhere.”

Thanks, again; I *was* annoyed about this “Widgets” thing and not knowing WTF it was and *why* I couldn’t get it working on my phone.

This, coming from a guy who’s been using a Mac since the 512 KB “Fat Mac.”

  • idea

How do you automatically switch between evernote premium accounts on IOS?

    • prosen

Hi, can you be a little bit more specific? Do you have more than one Premium account? If you do, there is no way to automatically switch between accounts in any client. You will have to sign out of one account and sign into another. If you are talking about switching between business and personal accounts, they are already connected in Evernote Premium. Does that answer your question? -Pam R

  • Edwin Will

Way too complicated. Not working. Back to the drawing board Evernote and get back to us when you have the particulars worked out.

  • John

Is there a way to hide the recent notes on the widget? – there is a reason my phone has a password and I don’t want anyone being able to see the notes if I misplace my phone

    • prosen

Hi, John, We can certainly understand your desire to hide recent notes. Here’s how you turn off the widget. Within Evernote app, Settings > General > Show Notes in Widget > ON|OFF (default is ON). Hope that helps! -Pam R

  • R Scott

I was having the problem with iMessage where I only saw the Evernote icon. The problem was that updating the main Evernote app through the app store didn’t upgrade it to the 7.17 version, even though it said that the app was updated. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Evernote app fixed iMessage.

    • Tom H

I was having the the same issues with iMessage. After I un-installed the app the re-downloaded, then the Evernote show the notes in iMessage.

    • Paul Carroll

R Scott’s comment fixed it for me – my version of Evernote was lower than 7.17

  • Richard

I have an iPhone 6S Plus with iOS 10 and Evernote 7.17.1. Unfortunately Evernote for iMessage is not working for me. The icon is there, and I can see a limited list of notes, but from that point on it fails. Searching shows no results and clicking any note results in ‘Unable to load Evernote.’ Anyone have a fix?

  • CD

The widget is great – but would love to see an update that allows the option of using a “shortcut” note instead of only most recent. Or an option just for the quick actions and no note at all would be nice too.
…Just thought I’d cast my vote for future features. Thanks for a wonderful app!

  • J Arnold

Same problem as so many others – just an icon with no progress opening. Best to get a feature working before advertising it.

  • Bredwede

Informative and nice point of view! Thanks! Guys, who don’t know how to write papers correctly, I find a Creative Blog about dissertation writing help. • Barry

I’m using iOS 10.0.1 with Evernote 7.17 and the app crashes every time i attempt a 3D Touch action (force touch, menu pops up, action selected, app opens, then crashes). Just checking to see if anyone else is experiencing this issue?

  • Laurie-Ann Murabito

Updated to ios10 yesterday and opened Evernote for the first time a few minutes ago. It won’t open properly. It closes extremely quickly. I can’t even hit send report before it shuts down completely.

  • Hop

Wow! The iMessage feature, above, is obscure! Eventually reading many discussion notes, I was able to install it. After the effort it is worthwhile! Surely you can be more informative in your announcement.

  • Levi Huddleston

I wish there was a way to edit PDF’s and PowerPoint, Word, and Excel documents. I frequently have to switch between programs and it is time consuming. :/

    • Levi Huddleston

And iMessage is not working. Kinda disappointed. I was a actually considering upgrading… Not anymore!

      • prosen

Levi, iMessage is in all versions of Evernote, and its functionality does not change when you upgrade. However, a few customers have reported issues with iMessage, and we’ve been able to help everyone who’s asked. If you can be more specific about your issue, perhaps we can troubleshoot. We don’t really do support here on the blog, but I’ve been helping out where I can because there is a bit of a learning curve with iMessage. It’s really cool once you get the hang of it, and we’d like you to be able to take advantage of it! -Pam R

    • prosen

Hi, Levi, Here’s a help document to get you started editing PDFs. https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/209005587-How-to-annotate-images-and-PDFs-in-Evernote. Also, many readers have had some issues with iMessage at first, but most have been able to get it to work. There is a learning curve with iMessage apps in general, and some customers have said that uninstalling and reinstalling Evernote has helped them. I hope this helps! -Pam R

I have had numerous problems trying to contact a human being at Evernote… I love your service – but cannot get questions answered – nor do I know if you are getting my messages as no one answers! Surely, a company as good as yours should have a phone# and e-mail for me to contact if I need to talk with someone… It is very unprofessional…. Please contact me and let me have some support contact information!!!

Hi, Kenneth, My name is Pam and I run the blog here at Evernote. I can’t provide technical support, but I can point you in the right direction. Robert, go to iMessage, on the left from message box, you will see a new arrow sign whatever you call it. Click that then you will see App icon on the right. Click App icon and click Manage on the right. You will see Evernote turn on/off option. You just need to turn it on.

  • Vivian

I have issue with the new Evernote. I am using iMac, Evernote extension option has been removed. How can I capture website and article? I have to have this function. There is NO customer service for Evernote.

Ever since I updated to Sierra OS and installed the related Evernote update, I have been unable to use the annotation tools consistently. Sometimes I am able to use the typing tool, but not the highlight, arrow, or other tools. Please advise, this feature is one of the reasons why I am a premium Evernote user.

    • prosen

It’s missing something to see videos in the app and to draw figures or make graphics…

  • Fai

Are you guys going to refurbish this app from the group up (in the near future)? I can see EN is doing very well in the new Windows, web and OSX applications, but the iOS one is full of issues and not responsive. And even the design of the home screen is not quite right as it is wasting a lot of space. An update of this app should be the next task of EN, enabling user to have a consistent experience across platforms. Thanks.

  • David Black

I am using pages with evernote, because the new dictation capabilities as an add on to macOS Sierra Dictation Commands are extremely powerful. Since i am a writer that pulls me in. I have found that when I drag a Pages file into Evernote it flashes the text briefly and then goes away. The file is there, and it can be seen if you open the file or quick view, but you cannot see the text. I think this is a bug that you can fix. Please do. I love your product. I also think that you should improve the dictation aspect of Evernote. Maybe by incorporating the capabilities of Dictation Commands will do it.

  • Kennay

how do i search for a keyword in my notes with the new update?

  • Davis

Is there a safe path through this whole problem with Evernote ScanSnap scanners and MacOS Sierra? I am afraid to update to Sierra, and get these scary messages from Fujitsu about it all… but no guidance from Evernote. Any help?

Davis, you might want to send a tweet to @EvernoteHelps to get help with technical issues. Thanks! -Pam R

is there a way I can send a iMessage to a bot and it gets sent to my evernote?

  • David Rivera

My question relates to adding new tags. It used to be an easy thing to do. The entire interface is–for me–more difficult to use. I can find tags but when I touch the tag it does not open up to show what’s in the tag.

    • Pamela Rosen

      David,
When you’re in All Notes view, scroll to the top. You’ll see an alarm icon and a tag icon. Tap the tag icon, select one or more tags, then tap ‘done.’ All of your notes associated with that tag or tags will now appear. Please someone tell me ASAP how to force the new Evernote app to sync. It is not syncing and I just as I opened my iPad to pick up some changes from my laptop it updated. It’s not syncing and now I can’t find any way of forcing it to do so and I don’t have time to reboot my iPad on the off chance that will help..

I have the current iOS on my iPhone 6+ and Evernote. I can’t find where the Evernote version is displayed, but the App Store listing for Purchased shows it in status “OPEN,” meaning, no updates available. Yet the Evernote icon in the HOME screen displays a ‘2’ in a red dot on its upper right hand corner, suggesting … I have two updates available? Am I missing something, or is this a bug, and if a bug, on the iOS side or with Evernote?
